The Letters
So in “Enchanting Grom Fight” we find out that someone has been writing letters to Luz’s mom, impersonating Luz. I have heard a few theories regarding this such as Luz possibly having a doppelganger created when she went through the portal or alternatively Eda is writing the letters. Neither of which I really buy. But hey, I will admit defeat if I am wrong.
I have been discussing this in a The Owl House discord server though and I have a theory of my own. While I think Luz’s Mom sent her to the camp with the best of intentions, it does feel like it could be an allegory for an LGBT conversion camp. The camp is pushing goers into this strict idea of conformity and to “think inside the box”. And there is a theme in The Owl House of this idea of conformity and those who don’t fit the mould being punished.
Luz, Eda, King, Willow, Gus and even Amity especially are people who don’t neatly fit into society’s expectations. Especially when you consider Luz is bi and Amity is a lesbian, it is even easier to see these allegories holding true. There are even hints towards chosen family. Both King and Eda express they view Luz as their family and then Lilith in “Agony of a Witch” says that Eda is now with “her real family”. There are strong connotations that just cos someone is blood, it doesn’t make them family. Cos in the context of the last line I mention, it is safe to say in that moment Lilith is in no way Eda’s real family.
My point is, throughout there are themes of those who don’t conform being forced to fit into society’s mould and expectations and this starts with the camp Luz is sent to at the beginning. It is easy for me to see this being a conversion therapy camp of some sort, even if not overtly.
On this basis, I imagine a camp like this especially wouldn’t want to admit they have lost a camp goer, especially at the very beginning. And I don’t know if you have read the content of the letters but they come off weird and creepy, almost like the idea of the children this camp would be trying to mould rather than you know, an actual human child. “Hey Mom, today we learned about mortgages!” isn’t something I’d expect a kid to be excited about (not the exact line btw).
I have a suspicion the camp is writing these letters in order to not have admit they have lost a child and to perhaps get their money.
I hope you enjoy my rambling theory anyway.
