The featured 19th-century Russian icon is dedicated to the creeds of faith, also known as the confessions of faith. What are they? The word creed stems from the Latin word crēdō (“I believe”). In Christianity, it refers to a statement or rather a declaration of beliefs in a religious community. Historically, they were called symbols and contained termed articles of faith – doctrines. The earliest known creed in Christianity was “Jesus is Lord.” In the icon, you can see 12 creeds chronologically linked to the events of the past.

Time is the first to blame when it comes to factors influencing the condition of religious icons. Good conservation and timely restoration may help you preserve an icon quality, but it is impossible for any object to look new, provided that there is such a thing as time. In the picture, you can see the icon “Gathering of Saints.” It was created in the 1800s by an anonymous master from the Mstera school of iconography. Despite some signs of wear and tear, it still holds its cultural and historical importance and serves as an excellent example of a sophisticated icon painting technique.
