IT’S MY BABY ELEPHANT’S BIRTHDAY, TOO! MUKKOKA IS TWO!!!
Some more photos of my son, Mukkoka. He’s so adorable, I just love him.
(For those who don’t know I adopted an elephant. I’m sponsoring this little goof.)
My baby elephant update could not have come at a better time.
“Maktao and Mukkoka had a fight over a tasty shrub over who should be able to enjoy it the most. Mukkoka was over powered by Maktao, leaving Maktao with the opportunity to feed on the shrub, but Mukkoka took his vengeance by taking Maktao’s tail in his mouth and biting down, promptly Maktao to run off very quickly! Mukkoka even chased after him, to make sure he ran as far away as possible into the forest and would not come back to eat the shrub that Mukkoka wanted so much.”
I’m a sappy old person with no self control, so meet my new son, Mukkoka.
They found him by tracking his footprints along the banks of the Tiva river and realizing there weren’t any other prints with his. He was born on my birthday, and it took them three days to track him after spotting his tracks.
He was too little to be alone, and they aren’t sure if he was abandoned or if his mother was killed by poachers. the DSWT Naorobi nursery staff took him in and named him Mukkoka, after a spot on the river where they found him.
He’s nearly 2 years old now (20 months), and has found a family with the other elephants at the sanctuary who look after him and play with him. He’s described as a “naughty boy” who likes to poke and prod the other calves. He has to wear jackets in the early spring because he gets cold. And I love him so much.

A few folks have asked, so here we go. This is the organization I used to adopt a baby elephant named Mukkoka. This organization was founded in the 1970s and has spent decades saving orphaned elephants and rhinos and providing them a safe and sheltered environment to grow up safe from poachers.
It costs $50 a year to adopt a baby, and you get a certificate of adoption, monthly watercolor paintings of the calves, and keeper updates with photos and stories about them as they grow. Each baby can have more than one sponsor, as obviously a mere $50 a year is not enough to meet the full needs of caring for an elephant.
If you adopt one of these babies, please let me know! I’d love to share this with you!
