I really want to come up with cool names for my tanks, because “the 46 gallon” and “the 5 gallon” don’t really inspire a sense of awe and wonder. Right now I’m leaning towards “Mulmtown” for the goldfish tank, “Algae Emporium” for V’s pad, and “This Tank Perpetuates Unrealistic Fish Care Standards” for the shrimp pico. Anyone else nickname their tanks?
Did a 90% water change on the goldfish tank and within 24 hours all the plants were covered in BBA. I think it’s safe to say that my algae problems are, indeed, being caused by large water changes.
Just got done with a hydrogen peroxide tank treatment + water change. My tank looks like a champagne glass, heheh.
Welp... after quite a bit of research, I think the BBA I’ve been getting in the goldfish tank might be caused by my enormous water changes.
I found out that my light fixture is giving me low-light levels of PAR so that’s not it. The other main culprit that causes BBA is fluctuating CO2--I’ve got steady CO2 flow from my DIY, so I didn’t think that could be it either. However, I found out that tap water often contains high levels of dissolved CO2, which means that 50% water changes with tap, especially water changes done with a Python, will cause a huge spike of CO2 into the aquarium. Ta-da, instant algae.
I guess there are a few ways to remedy this. First and most impossible would be to let the water sit for a while in buckets before adding it--for 50% changes in a 46 gallon, that would be incredibly inconvenient. The other method would be to just do smaller and more frequent water changes, which I’m sure would be better for the fish anyway.
Sigh. Aquariums, I tell you. Well, time to douse everything in hydrogen peroxide, I guess.
My 100 gallon plans are going to go slightly on hold thanks to this new aquaponics obsession... also because I found out that my Coralife T5NOs are pretty much useless. No wonder my dwarf sag is so pathetic. Gonna save up for an Odyssea T5HO and then use the T5NOs to light the aquaponics plants!
Oh wow, test kit is still reading 0 nitrates and here comes the hair algae...

Never thought I’d ever need to dose nitrates into a goldfish tank. What a time to be alive.
(This is after five days without a water change.)
Also, holy crap! I didn’t think the hygro was doing much, but I just checked a photo from when it first went in the tank and it’s grown at least two inches in a week and a half!
