Summary: In the future, Kurt and Blaine try out a simulation that allows them to meet each other for the first time again and again and again.
Here's all their "first" meetings.
Notes: Hello, hello, hello! Welcome to my Gleecember fic. This is just me writing a bunch of separate meet-cutes and putting them in one fic with a sort-of-overarching story. I initially planned this idea for the Klaine Advent, but that sadly came to an end. I wrote an introspection about my time with the Advent. I am grateful for all the years with that challenge.
Luckily, the Glee fandom is still around, and a new challenge has arisen. But this is a new challenge, so new rules! I don't know if I will do all the 31 prompts. I have a prologue, and epilogue, and a whole lot of meet-cutes as a middle, but I don't have enough for all 29 (yet?).
Still, I am excited to write this, and I hope you will enjoy.

SURPRISE
“Excuse me? Um, hi, can I ask you a question? I’m new here.”
“My name’s Blaine.”
“Kurt.”
--
“I’m so happy I met you all those years ago.”
Blaine reaches for Kurt’s hand.
Kurt smiles.
“I am too.”
It’s led to all of this. This life worth living. Kurt and Blaine did it: they grew old together.
They’re both old and grey and sitting on a porch, watching the flowers bloom. They’ve both retired after a prolific career in the arts, they raised amazing children, and are the “best grandads ever” according to their grandchildren. They’re living long and fulfilling lives filled with warmth, hardships, love and all the other life stuff. And they did it side by side.
Oh, how would their lives have gone if they hadn’t met that day at Dalton Academy, all the way in 2010?
“Although, I can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if we had met in a different way,” Blaine says.
Kurt raises an eyebrow.
Blaine looks alarmed.
“I am not saying I regret anything, love! I wouldn’t trade our reality for any other.”
Kurt lets out a laugh.
“I am not thinking you are.”
You can be curious without wanting to change things. Kurt gets that.
“Oh. Good,” Blaine relaxes, “Because… I may have a surprise for you.”
A surprise? Kurt searches his memory for an occasion, but he cannot think of one. Knowing Blaine, he’s doing this just because he can.
“You know how Sam and Mercedes’s kid is really into these simulation services these days?”
“Yes.”
Kurt and Blaine have seen a lot of rapid technological changes in their lifetimes. They were born in a time before the internet was common in households, and now the simulation service is all the rage. These days, you can take trips into a simulation. It used to be a luxury, and nothing more than an extension of the basic VR from back in the 2010s, but in the past few years, this has become more accessible to people. It’s seen as a form of wish fulfilment. You get to experience things you otherwise never would’ve experienced. And it feels real. It’s as if you really get uploaded into the worlds.
What does Blaine have in store? Why is he bringing this up now?
“Sam told me that there’s a new romance simulation!” Blaine says excitedly, “He and Mercedes already tried it. It lets you live out different first meetings with your partner!”
“Let me guess, you want us to do it?”
“Please?”
Back when they were teens, Kurt would often talk about Blaine’s ‘puppy eyes’. That’s how the look on Blaine’s face can be best described.
“I would like to meet you, in any scenario that is out there. Again, I would never want to redo our actual first meeting, but it sounds fun to try this.”
It does. And the simulation makes it so that it doesn’t erase what actually happened.
Kurt squeezes Blaine’s hand.
“You know what? Let’s do it.”
--
Kurt and Blaine ask Sam for the address of the place where his son works, and they book an appointment. It takes a few days, since, again, simulation services are the biggest hit of the year, but since they’re retired, they manage to get a morning weekday spot.
When they enter the building, they’re greeted by an old man.
“Mr. and Mr. Hummel-Anderson?” he asks kindly.
“How did you know?” Kurt asks.
“… You’ve made an appointment,” the man replies.
Right. Of course. Blaine chuckles.
After Kurt and Blaine sign some paperwork, confirming that they are aware of the fact that whatever is about to take place is nothing more than fiction, they are led to a separate room. There are two comfortable chairs with some sort of headgear next to them on a table. The man explains that this will allow them to enter the Love Journey simulation, which is a tacky name.
“They are wireless these days, like everything,” the man hands one of them to Blaine, “But rest assured, they’re still connected to the main system. You can talk to me whenever you want. You can ask me to pause if needed, or turn it all down. I won’t be in the simulations with you, since that is a breach of privacy, but just know that you can ask me to interfere if you wish.”
“I though that we won’t be realising we’re in a simulation,” Kurt asks.
That’s part of the selling point. It’s supposed to feel real. This is partially why they had to sign the documents, acknowledging that once they leave the simulation, they accept that what has happened was fictional.
“The mind is powerful,” the man says, “If something goes amiss, you will know. But that rarely happens these days. Still, the communication feature remains just in case.”
“And… you will be conducting the Love Journey?” Blaine asks.
It’s clear that he is. No one else is here, and he’s the one explaining everything. But Kurt gets why Blaine asks it. This man seems like he’s as old as Kurt and Blaine. They had expected a younger person, since this is something the newer generation is gagging after. Most Conductors are in their 20s or in their 30s.
“Yes,” the man, the Conductor, answers, and as if he understands their doubts, he adds: “I have been working in the simulation field back when simulation was nothing more than Meta’s flopped Metaverse. I did not work on that one, though.”
That makes sense. Just because it’s new to Kurt and Blaine doesn’t mean it’s new to everyone.
“Now then, gentlemen, are there any more questions?”
Kurt and Blaine have none, so they follow the Conductor’s instructions and sit down. Kurt also gets one of those headsets.
“Alright. Commencing Love Journey in one… two… three…”
The Conductor keeps counting, but slowly, Kurt and Blaine lose track of the count. They feel themselves slip into something else.
“See you on the other side,” Blaine manages to say, before they fall unconsciousness.

End notes: Back when I thought there'd still be an Advent, I was doubting whether I should create an overarching story, or just post 21 (or 24) separate stories. Of course, once I come up with something, the Advent stops. I didn't want to let go of the overarching story, but like Kurt and Blaine, all meet-cutes feel "real", as in, they stand on their own. All to say that the overarching story won't be that strong throughout the fic. But it's there, and in the epilogue, you will see why.

Hello, shippers & readers, we're back at it again with yet another of our voted and majority-chosen reads.
This time we, once again, found ourselves revisiting a very dear-to-our-heart fandom classic: Ghouls in my head, Fires Underground, a skilled surgical dissection into the experience of the "and they were roommates" trope with a heaping dose of an emotional cross-section of these two men trying to navigate sexuality, intimacy, and trust as written by the very talented liminalweirdo.
When we say that there were tears, yells and even at times speechlessness, we're not exaggerating. This fic was a hot and gorgeous study in a reader's reaction to being confronted with a reality where two people fit in all the right ways but insecurity, social cues and anxieties keep them at odds-- which is perhaps why our discussion excerpts are longer this time!

Summary: Shane ends up living at Ryan's and really, it's no big deal. Until it is.
Book Club Thoughts
I always know when it comes to this author that we're about to get long descriptions of either boys' psyche and the depth of feeling is always going to get uncomfortably close to home
it's almost strange that this was written in 2018 because it feels like a 2021 fic and then suddenly you hear an off detail and it's like, damn, how did they so perfectly capture their neuroses even back then. really impressive
i think this is the first fic we've done in some time that just sits us down and makes us vicariously experience the discomfort of deep insecurities and anxieties that come with being queer and in love with your best friend
There's something universal in there - of settling and not realising you are until you see what you could have 'cause the strung up glass is pretty and probably fun but god imagine having the whole window to look at. Glass fragments don't keep out the rain! The window does!
[the author's] metaphors though. Her prose gut punches but not in a sequential fashion. She gets you comfortable, at ease with exposition and dialogue that's snappy and real and rhythmic then she goes in
The author writes truly poetically and beautifully. The way Shane is described always pulling back and having trouble opening or saying what he really wants and how it always breaks down when he is around Ryan.
for me, this fic like, set a tone for what friends to lovers could be. the descriptions are incredible, especially when we get down into it, and there's so much introspection on either side
When we were doing the live read for the first chapter, we were talking about how good the dialogue is in this fic - and it really is excellent
I think it actually fucking rips me apart how incredibly beautiful it is when Ryan says he’s willing to take the time to make sure sex is pleasurable for Shane
i thought the pov switching was unbelievably adept
the nice...symmetry perhaps of them both having that family relationship. and they've reached a point by then when they are ready to open up emotionally about the real stuff and what's realer than family
there's a lot going on and a lot to think about, but it all sort of boils down to the magnetism and how they try to fight it, and eventually just snap together
I think it’s one of the most realistic characterization of Shane I’ve seen seen even thought a lot of fics get him right. But this one just feels so close for some reason? Ryan being the one that pulls him through is just chefs kiss

“You’re thinking too much. Let me make you stop,” Sukea offered and, yes, his voice was different but Sakura liked it even if something about it made her mind inch.
“Okay,” she agreed before closing her eyes. She didn’t want to (see the world, she just wanted to wake up to find out the mission had been a bad dream) see Sukea and think on the things that she kept picking up on from him. All Sakura wanted was to be Chinami who was just a traveler just like Sukea was. A traveler who didn’t have people’s lives slip through her hands because she wasn’t good enough.

(You’re not good enough to keep working; you can’t endure like others do. You’re too young. You’re supposed to just wait around until your teammates get back because those who abandon their teammates are worst than scum.
And Sakura wanted to laugh despite the loneliness that had dug itself into her skin, and had made her bleed, so not to be shaken off.
They left - they left and now it was just her so why should she wait until they got back? She wasn’t a piece of cake that could be discarded.
Sakura had wanted Sasuke and now she wanted to be better in serving her village. Her crush, her teammate, refuting her didn’t stop her chasing after him even though she should have respected his choice. What was their opinions, strangers opinions, compared to that?)
Then I burn, were the words Sakura wanted to spill out from her tongue, to spew out as though they were poison she studied and used, and I get up from my ashes.

Kakashi didn’t greet her with an apology, a lie, or even with a hello. (He wasn’t too for gone that he had neglected himself to point he couldn’t sense her coming.)
That’s okay because Sakura doesn’t smile up at him, she doesn’t (lie) promise everything is going to be okay, nor does she greet her husband like she would have this morning if he wasn’t already out of the house. Sakura didn’t even take one of Kakashi’s hands into her own and give it a small squeeze in comfort, in a subtle way to remind him she was still here. No, instead Sakura exhaled the breath she had been holding in and it doesn’t remove the heaviness she feels in her chest.
“You need to come home.” Sakura doesn’t ask for him to do it for her even though Sakura had too lost their child. (We’re not dead, Sakura wanted to yell, and if you continue to keep your company with them, with the dead, then one day when you do come home we might just have become the company you prefer to keep. We might just become the dead you idolize because you were too late in life to realize how much your loved ones meant to you.)

With bloodied lips and sharp canines Kakashi smiles at the sight - it’s only for a night after all. In the past he had tried to shove it down, had never voiced that sin unlike the others (so many others) to the tombstones of his fallen comrades, but he’s dying now. He can have it just for a little bit. The air is hard to breath in, its too cold or maybe he’s too out of breath, and there’s clothe from his destroyed mask in his bloodied mouth but that’s okay. It’ll be over soon.

Summary:
The great history book of Kaedwen details the life of the people in the court of Ard Carraigh. Sabrina Glevissig was one of them. In the beginning, they describes her as bright and pure as a goddess, shone like the light of a candle in the blackest night. She always supported the soldiers and tried to draw misguided ones on to the path of righteousness. Yet seems like they were blind to the light. It is written that they nailed her to a wheel. The brave knights of Kaedwen pierced her slender hands and throttled her narrow waist with a rope as the king laughed and encouraged his men to mock her. As the flames licked the wood from the pyre that was readied beforehand, their sneer and mockery turned into trembles because the fire would not accept her. Unmindful of the heat, the king himself scaled the flaming wood and pierced her heart. Thus’ marks the end of the fierce daughter of Kaedwen forest.
History as she has grown familiar with many years of seeing it unfolds, often contains half-truth, pieces of vision of some mere unknowing observer, not of those from the main subject of the passage. While it is correct that the day was her final battle, her end was not.
