Ever had one of those days where nothing seems to go right?
You have an amazing boyfriend, or two like my case, a great job, a roof over your head, clothes on your back, food in your belly, and all the other worldly things that we are blessed with.
Then one shoe drops. For me, that would be my mom having a heart attack.
Just as luck would have it, my boyfriends were away on a mission and I was the only one able to take my mom to a hospital.
Since COVID protocols are still essential in hospitals, I’m forced to wear a mask for the whole 4 hour duration of our visit. For most people, wearing a mask is just another thing, but I have asthma. Being an asthmatic, wearing a mask makes it even harder for me to breathe.
While waiting for my mom to be put in a private room, I step out and call the boys.
Pressing Steve’s dial button, I wait with tears in my eyes and I nervously tap my foot on the pavement. On the second ring, I hear one of the sweet voices that I need.
“Hey doll, we were just wondering how you were doing.” Steve said, the smile evident in his voice.
I take a shaky breath before answering. “Well, m-my m-m-mmom. Steve.” I say before breaking down, sliding down onto a bench next to the hospital entrance.
I hear rustling before Bucky breaks in. “Baby doll. I need you to breathe and tell us what’s wrong.”
“She.” I say, taking a few breaths before continuing. “I think she had a heart attack. I’m at the hospital with her.”
“Oh baby.” Steve murmured. “What can we do?”
“N-nothing. Jus needed to hear your voices.” I say, forcing myself to relax into the warm bench, the summer breeze making me sweat in Steve’s sweats and Bucky’s sweat shirt.
“I already called for an evac. They are going to send Clint and Nat.” Bucky said from the background. “We should be on our way back in about an hour.”
“You hear that hunny? We are coming home.” Steve whispered, trying to bring some sense of calm to the storm that was dragging me under.
“You don’t have to. I-“ I started to say.
“We want to.” Steve interrupted.
“We wouldn’t have made arrangements if we didn’t want to doll.” Bucky said. “You need us more.”
“Okay.” I said, nodding along. “Okay. Okay. I can do this.”
“That’s right doll. You can do this.” Bucky said.
“Once we are in the air, we will be 5 hours out.” Steve explained. “So we need you to hold on for a few more hours. Can you do that for me sweetheart?”
“Okay. That’s our girl.” Steve said.
“Now. Take some breaths. If you head back to the tower, have Jarvis inform us. Can you do that for us?” Bucky asked.
“I can do that.” I replied.
“Okay. Good girl.” Bucky hummed. “Do you want us to send someone over to be with you?”
“N-no. Just. I need you. I need you both.” I whispered, trying not to let the dam break.
“You’ve got us hunny.” Steve said. “No matter how far away we are, you’ve got us.”
“Til the end of the line.” Bucky said.
“Til the end of the line.” I whispered back.
“Hang tight sweetheart. We will be there as soon as we can. We love you.” Steve said.
“I love you both too.” I replied before hanging up and making my way back inside.
After hours of tests and no real answers, they finally admitted my mom.
I spent most of my time relaying information to my step dad, my mom’s best friend, Tony, and the boys. Tony was keeping up with the boys and trying to talk me into transferring my mom to the tower, but she refused.
Since she wouldn’t be moved up stairs until the next day, I was forced to go back to the tower and get some rest. Steve and Bucky had a minor delay, so I went to bed alone once I spoke to them once more. They were about 3 hours out. They insisted I slept, seeing as I was determined to go to work the following day. I couldn’t refuse.
When I woke up 4 hours later, I could hear hushed voices out in the kitchen. The door was cracked and light was pouring in. Steve’s shield was leaned against the wall and their bags were sat beside it.
“She doesn’t want to stay home?” Tony asked.
“No. You know how she gets.” Bucky says. “She’s like us. She works through the pain and the stress. She can’t just sit around doing nothing.”
“Well, I wish she would let me move her mom downstairs.” Tony whisper yells, obviously frustrated with the situation, but worried for me.
“It’s her mom. Her mom said no and Y/N wants to respect her wishes.” Steve says, a bit more forcefully than he intended.
“Yeah. Yeah. I know.” Tony says.
“Look, she wakes up for work in an hour. We will try to get her to stay home, but you know as well as the both of us that she won’t.” Bucky says, sounding as exhausted as I feel.
“Okay. Give her my love. Let her know I’m here for whatever she needs.” Tony says. “Take care of my girl.”
“We always do Stark.” Steve says as the voices fade.
You see, Tony found me a few years back. My family needed some extra help and he was there to pick up the pieces. He brought my mom and I in, helped us get back on our feet, moved my mom into her own apartment just on the outskirts of the city, and allowed me to stay in the tower. He set me up with the daycare I now work for. Tony makes sure that we keep running and parents get aid for child care.
As I hear the elevator doors slide shut, I walk to the door and open it up. The boys are just turning around as I bolt out of the room, running at full speed toward them. Bucky easily catches me as I sob loudly in his arms. Steve joins our hug and they both whisper sweet words of reassurance into my ears.
“It’s gonna be okay.” Bucky whispers over and over again, making it sound like a mantra. We sway back and forth, both men clutching onto me as I clutch onto Bucky.
As soon as I start to calm down, I turn to Steve, wanting to hold on to him for a bit. I lay my face into the crook of his neck once he has me situated onto his front. Bucky rubs my back as he and Steve have a silent conversation over my head.
“Hey baby doll. Tony called you in late. He sends his love.” Bucky says, drawing my attention.
“Let’s get you back to bed for a bit. We’ll lay with you. You need more sleep.” Steve says, turning to walk back into our shared room.
Once you all got situated: you in the middle, Bucky curled around your back with his metal arm over your waist, and Steve allowing you to use him as a pillow; you fall back into a deep sleep feeling safe in your lovers arms.
Being woken up by lips peppering kisses all over your skin was the best feeling in the world. The drowsiness of sleep still had you entangled. The world didn’t matter. Just you with Steve and Bucky peppering those sweet little kisses across your face and shoulders was all the mattered. Besides, how can you remember anything with their lips on you anyways?
The moment was cut short fairly quickly. Hushed words were spoken of the day’s plans. Still stuck in your little bundle of peace. The boys strive to keep you calm, keep their world safe from all the danger outside their bed. Calming words of reassurance were spoken when your mom was brought up. How you were feeling, how they wanted to help, what they planned to do for the day. All the mundane matters were quickly discussed before the boys helped you get ready for the day.
You checked your phone for updates, receiving only a room number from your mother. No test results, no information from her doctor, no news at all. This part stressed you out the most. You’re a fixer, but you cant fix this. You have to wait for others to find the solution and hope to God that they do it in time.
The boys help you get dressed. Reminding you that they are there and nobody would blame you for staying home for the day. You refuse again. Bucky, the other constant worrier of the couple, gets frustrated because he can see where this path will lead you. Unable to watch this anymore, but wanting to still help you, Bucky excuses himself to make your lunch and get breakfast ready for everyone.
Too stuck in your head, you fail to see Bucky’s frustration and Steve’s hovering, but they notice the absence of you. Your body is there, but your brain is basically on another planet.
Once you are ready to go, everyone has breakfast and Bucky has all your things in order, Steve takes you to work. You try to insist on driving yourself, but the boys argue, with good points, on how tired you are and the dangers of driving while exhausted. Bucky stays back, but immediately leaves for the hospital to check on your mom once Steve’s truck is out of view. The boys care so much about you, and you care so much about your mom, so Bucky is going to make his presence known. He is an Avenger. He is your boyfriend. He demands that your mom has the best treatment and the best medical staff. He even pulls the Winter Soldier’s deminor to ensure that his message gets across.
Steve drops you off at work, sneaking in to talk with your boss and have her relay the message to your coworkers. Your phone is to always be on your person and to never be on silence, you need freedom to leave when needed, and if you nred anything but refuse to call him or Bucky, they are to be contacted immediately. After watching you work through the viewing window of your room (not creepy. Its what the window is meant for.), Steve leaves to go settle himself in a nearby park. He chats with Bucky to update him on you and see how your mom is, then he sketches until his phone rings.
“Hey Steve. It’s Christy, Y/N’s boss.” Christy greets.
Once he hears this, he begins throwing his sketch pad and pencils back in his bag and jogging to his truck. “What’s goin on?” Steve asks.
“Well, Y/N got a bit overwhelmed. Her grandmother kept calling because she was worried, no updates on her mom and just general craziness of the room caused her to break down. We’ve managed to calm her down some, and she insists she’s fine, but we can handle things here and she needs rest.” Christy explains, already having a plan for you to leave. She’s completely understanding and shocked that you’ve made it half way through the day without breaking down from all the stress.
Steve sighs, already driving the 10 minutes back to your work. “Thanks for the heads up ma’am. I’m 10 minutes away. Can someone help her get her stuff together? I’ll just come in and bring her home.” Steve asks.
“Of course! No problem!” Christy replied. “We just want what’s best for her. I’ll get right on that and we will see you soon.”
“Thank you ma’am.” Steve replies before hanging up.
During the short drive, Steve calls Bucky to let him in on what’s going on. They make a plan for him to leave. They conference in the other avengers and they all offer to take turns sitting with your mom to ensure she has the best care. They are left to figure out their own schedules once Steve pulls up to your work.
Quickly, Steve jumps out of the truck, which he leaves running, before heading in to get you. Once he walks in, she can see you curled up with your sweater on, softly crying into your hands as one of your coworkers comforts you. Christy meets him at the door, allowing him entrance and offering to put your stuff in his truck. He takes the help and walks into your classroom.
Kneeling down, your coworker moves away and gives Steve a watery smile as Steve reaches for you. “Doll?” Steve whispers, gently running a hand through your hair.
Your head snaps up, surprise in your expression. “W-what are y-y-you doing here?” You whisper, unable to speak louder through the tears and the panic rising in your chest.
“I’m here to take you home.” He murmured. “Let’s go sweetheart.”
Reaching down, Steve pulls you up and into his embrace. Doors are opened for him as he carries you out of the room. He nods his thanks to each person who helps him along his way. Getting to the truck, Steve opens the passenger side and sets you in your seat. Your legs hang out the door and Steve stands between them, leaning in to hold your face in his hands and make eye contact with you. He takes a dramatic, deep breath. You copy without instruction and allow Steve to buckle you in before he goes around to his side and pulls out of the parking lot.
“The team is going to be ok a rotating schedule. Someone will be with your mom at all times to make sure she gets the best care.” Steve tells you, reaching over to hold your hand. “Bucky has been with her ever since I dropped you off. The team has made a schedule amongst themselves, and we will be alerted of any news or changes. All you need to do is rest.” Steve finishes, squeezing your hand in his.
Tears in your eyes again, you squeeze his hand back, replying “Oh my Gods, thank you.” in a watery voice.
“Of course.” Steve says, easily parking his truck in his spot in the Stark Tower parking garage. “We all care about you and want what’s best for you.”
We stay silent the rest of the way. We get out, ride the elevator to the common area to grab a few of your favorite snacks and more of your favorite water flavor, and then go back to your floor.
Bucky meets you at the elevator. He scoops you up as soon as the doors open, carrying you straight to bed. Bucky helps you get undressed and change back into your pjs before tucking you in.
As he starts to stand up, you roll over and visibly start to shake. The panic coming back at full force with nothing to keep you distracted. Bucky is quick to strip so that he can join you under the covers. As soon as he is laid down, you throw yourself on top of him and wail into his chest. Bucky sighs, rubbing your back and shushing you to the best of his abilities. Seeing you so upset breaks his heart.
Hearing the commotion, Steve jogs into the room with a snack, a glass of water, and some headache medicine in tow. He joins you both when he is down to his boxers. They hold you until you finally start to calm some. Steve coaxes some snack, water, and your pills in you before he allows you to take a nap.
Curled up with your lovers, knowing your mom is being taken care of and protected, you let yourself drift to sleep. The last thing you hear is Bucky whispering, “It’s going to be okay.”
