Tynshawn Sorey: Eluding Category

Alex Ross's latest critical endeavor to describe the far-reaching music of Tyshawn Sorey arrives at a conclusion not unlike his previous attempts: cast aside your preconceptions. Trying to pigeonhole Tyshawn Sorey's compositions and playing ultimately not only proves fruitless, but misses the thrust and richness of Sorey's art. Accept instead Sorey's challenge to listen with the concentration his music demands. At least here, in his latest New Yorker piece on Sorey, Ross stakes out some potentially helpful guideposts for adventurers.
