Hedviga Golik

In 1966 Hedviga Golik wanted to watch TV in her home in Zagreb, Croatia so she made herself a cup of tea and sat in her favorite chair. In 2008, after being missing for 42 years, she was found in her tomb like state, mummified in her chair. She didn’t even finish her tea.She was only found after police broke into her house to see who lived there.

Even though she was reported missing, no one thought to check her apartment. Her neighbors even thought she had moved out. Police were quoted saying “when officers went in there, they said it was like stepping into a place frozen in time. The cup she had been drinking tea from was still on the table next to the chair she had been sitting in and the house was full of things no one had seem for decades. Nothing had been disturbed for decades, even though there were more than a few cobwebs in there.”

Jadranka Marikc was nine when Hedviga ‘vanished’. She said “I still remember her. She was a quite woman who kept to herself but was polite. We all thought she had just moved out and gone to live with relatives.”

Mummified Animals of “World’s Worst Zoo”were left to perish

Mummified remains -  both human and animal - give us an interesting and yet stark glimpse of a life since passed.

Meet the lost souls of the infamous Khan Younis Zoo of Gaza, known for neglecting the animals that resided in the dreaded hell. 

Mummification occurs when a deceased body [cadaver] is exposed to high temperatures with little to no moisture.

The animals of the Khan Younis Zoo in Gaza were not only malnourished from neglect, but with failing health and soaring heat, they were left to die with no food nor water. Their bodies remained in tact due to the climate and dry desert air, dehydration and starvation most likely claiming their lives.

Based on my research, it would appear that after the discovery of the mummified specimens, this zoo was finally forced to shut down and its remaining animals were rescued.

Located inside Dom St Petri in Bremen, Germany - but accessed via a separate entrance south of the main door, the Lead Cellar was formerly the cathedral’s cellar and today is a crypt in which bodies have mummified in the incredibly dry air. You can see eight preserved bodies in open coffins here, including a Swedish countess, a soldier with his mouth opened in a silent scream and a student who died in a duel in 1705
