hey yo everyone reblogging this post can yall stop
yes, educating people that shit they've said was bigotry is nice and it's true that most people are not really socially aware of certain things being sexist, or racist, or whatever and some people do actually listen when you talk to them
but that post pulls off some false equivalence bullshit by basically saying "IF YOU'RE NOT EDUCATING PEOPLE YOU'RE AS BAD AS THE BIGOTS" and that shit is fucked up and completely untrue.
it is NOT anyone's god-given duty to educate people on pointing out they're being bigots and why are they being bigots especially if 90% of the times the response will be "psshh you're being a bummer" or "i'm not REALLY offending you" or "you're just CHOOSING to be offended", or, worse, having a very real risk of violence towards me because I might have to explain to someone that I am transgender & they might be complete nasty fucking transphobes.
I can completely choose to prefer not to associate with someone who did a shitty thing and made me feel really bad or be on my guard about it, especially if I am from a minority in which the bigotry is being targetted at because the person MIGHT REALLY BE A BIGOT.
And, yes, murderathogwarts, this is one of the first things i worry about because i am transgender and I plan to transition soon. I worry about literally every single person that might be a potential friend regard bigotry because I do not want to be bullied, demeaned or have something worse happen to me because I'll have to come out to them as trans one day. It's really nice that you and a lot of other people don't have to worry about that, but I have to, so please fuck off.
So please stop reblogging that because it is really bad advice, especially for the safety of people who are targetted by bigotry. Educating people & calling them out and giving them a chance is great, but don't act like it's my obligation to do so or if I'm being a bad person for not doing that especially when I worry for my own personal happiness and safety. Information is out there and anyone can get it especially with the internet, it is NOT anyone's fault but yours if you did a shitty thing.
