Remember about 8 months ago when I made this video discussing the "Living Museum" AI app that is fraught with incorrect information and allows you to "chat" with human remains and culturally sensitive items?

Well, the creator, Jonathon Talmi, is now a speaker at the world-renowned Museum Next summit.

Gross.

I have sent an email to MuseumNext that is as follows:

Hello, 

I am emailing MuseumNext as a GLAM professional and former speaker to express my disappointment at the presence of one of your presenters, Jonathon Talmi in the 2025 Digital Summit. As you know, he is the creator of the "Living Museum" app, an AI app that scraped data from the British Museum collection search (without their knowledge or permission) and created chatbots for individual artifacts. 

Talmi has stated that the program has two functions: to create an exhibit (which it does poorly and the "exhibit" is no different than a Google search filled with incorrect and inaccruate information) and to allow the user to chat with artifacts (including contested items in the British Museums collection, culturally sensitive items, and even human remains!). I have discussed my issues with this program at length in a critical YouTube video, which you can view here.

As I stated in my response video to this project, I do believe that there is space for artificial intelligence in the GLAM sector. However, the Living Musuem is a poor example of how this can be used - it is fraught with mistakes and is an unethical nightmare of a program. 

Any GLAM professional worth their salt will condemn this, and I worry about the reputation of MuseumNext going forward if you allow this speaker at your summit. Your website boasts that: "MuseumNext has been sharing best practices and shaping how museums use digital technology for over fifteen years," but this is not best practice. Not even close. 

I am asking that you re-examine "The Living Museum" app, discuss the ethical rammifications of this program museum professional or an ethics committee, and reconsider allowing Jonathon Talmi to share this program at your summit.

I am so incredibly disappointed in MuseumNext. I had hoped to one day present with them again, but I don't think I can in good conscience when they are platforming programs like the "Living Museum".

BAM! non chiude mai. Ma tra chi parte e chi torna dalle ferie, abbiamo messo insieme i mantra, i buoni propositi e qualche ‘mai più senza’ della nostra estate. 

Ecco le #5coseche vorremmo proprio consigliarvi per una vacanza (culturale e non) o semplicemente per sopravvivere al caldo metropolitano; tema su cui siamo ferratissimi.

Se a un certo punto sotto l’ombrellone finirete quel romanzo lunghissimo che vi avevano regalato a Natale, potreste anche decidere, a mente libera, di buttarvi nella rapida lettura dei 10 comandamenti… ehm… “The Ten Pinciples of Museum Entrepreneurship” di Erik Schilp, il bigino che girava quest’anno tra i banchi di MuseumNext a Ginevra che è stato prontamente trasformato in un sitarello gradevolmente leggibile anche da mobile. Il mio principio preferito ovviamente è il settimo, che non è “non rubare”, ma “Break the mold”, dove eliminare la muffa dai musei coincide con l’uscire dagli schemi. Poi ricominciate coi romanzi, però. ;-)

Estate, momento di riposo, di mente libera, cieli grandi. Gambe in spalla e pedalare (metaforicamente, mi raccomando!). Se ancora siete indecisi c’è un posto arrampicato e difficile da raggiungere dove il cielo è più vicino, i folletti e le fate se la giocano a carte tutte le sere e l’aria è tersa, fresca e così tanto pulita che non vi accorgerete neanche che c’è! Parlamento delle Marmotte, gruppo del Fanes, Alta Badia, Dolomiti. Provare per credere.

Leave your selfie stick at home // Federico

Ogni estate ha il suo tormentone, anche nel campo della fruizione culturale. Il 2015 è l'anno del maledetto bastone da selfie. Il dibattito fra i musei europei è già iniziato. I più zelanti (c'è da dirlo? Gli inglesi) hanno già emanato i primi divieti formali, mentre gli italiani stanno ancora cercando di tradurre "stick" (se hanno mai capito esattamente "selfie"). Ma diciamocelo: i musei non ci preoccupano. Il nostro problema sono i concerti. Quando capiti -sempre- dietro al più alto dei paganti, non puoi accettare anche che se ne stia impalato (letteralmente) come alla processione del venerdì santo, portando la croce del suo ricordo in video, sgranato e probabilmente decentrato. Chissà la sofferenza per parenti, amici e follower sui social. La soluzione consigliata è una sola: cantate forte, ma così forte, da rovinargli il video. Dovrà capitolare, o farvi largo. Ve lo dice uno che da anni arriva in prima fila ai concerti sempre con la stessa tecnica. E allora, buona estate di squarciagola a tutti.

Keep calm and give someone a second chance // Elena

Lo scorso inverno mi sono fatta diversi chilometri per visitare un Sito Unesco abbastanza noto. Desideravo vederlo da tanto, una di quelle cose che studi sui libri e restano per anni nella to-visit-list. Prima di mettermi in marcia (era nevicato da poco) avevo scandagliato il web e chiamato il numero indicato sul sito in cerca di informazioni sull’apertura del luogo e, non essendoci avvisi di chiusura straordinaria, sono partita, fiduciosa. Raggiunta l’ambita meta, ho trovato un foglio volante, scritto a penna, appiccicato sul portone che avvisava della chiusura imprevista, proprio a causa della neve… Sciolta la neve e sbollita la rabbia, mi sono ripromessa di tornarci per le vacanze estive, perché a un oggetto dei nostri desideri si può perdonare tutto, anche un bello svarione comunicativo, e una seconda possibilità non la si nega a nessuno :-)

Partite per le ferie, disconnettete i device e imparate a usare il sup* per sfuggire al controllo dei reparti comunicazione della vostra azienda, evitando così di scrivere consigli estivi che leggeranno solo quelli che le ferie non sanno cosa sono.

*a chi ancora sia convinto che l’hipsterissima fixed bike sia l’ultima tendenza meglio spiegare che il sup è quella specie di tavola da surf che si utilizza stando in piedi vogando con un remo, probabilmente inventata a Comacchio, originariamente chiamata batana, e utilizzata in valle per la pesca dell’anguilla, poi esportata da qualche mancato surfista californiano e utilizzata nelle giornate di calma piatta. E la fixie, lasciatela parcheggiata in ufficio!
