James had been a vampire for centuries, long enough to be strong enough to go out in the sunlight and not burn to ashes and he definitely should be able to control himself by now. Normally he did, could be around humans no problem, even bleeding humans if he wasn’t starving but more recently he’d been having troubles.

And the reason for this was one woman, the daughter of a fellow high ranking navy man whose name was Ariel. Something about her was irresistible to him, she just smelled so good. Naturally the vampire tried to stay away from her as it got harder to stay back, didn’t want to bite an innocent woman but fate had different plans. And maybe they had met up once or twice, maybe they had been talking but James had decided soon enough that he could not take it, that it took him way too much effort to be sure he wouldn’t drink from her.

It was the night of a party, one of those exhaustinly boring ones where only the important people and their family had been invited and of course he was one of them. James would have rather stayed home, did not feel like making small talk with dull people and definitely did not wish to risk running into Ariel again but he had to go anyway. Needless to say Ariel was there and they did share a few glances but he did his best to avoid her.

Well, it had worked out till he decided to take a break in the library of the house the party was held in, after the crowd had gotten too much for him. She was there aswell. “Ariel?” he asked, stepping forward. Her smell was already making it hard and even worse, he had not fed in a while. “What are you doing here alone?” He hoped his actions hadn’t upset her.

although he had created his reapers for the sole purpose of never having to personally escort a soul to the afterlife again, he found himself unable to remain idle for all that long. eternity dragged on and he along with it. boredom became all too familiar a companion to the father of all reapers. and so he found himself once again thrown back into the work he had set aside to his creations.

it was a pitiful sight to behold, like many he’d seen all too often. despite the pictures romantic poets might have painted, death was never pretty. it was cruel and it was ugly. there was a distinct stench that accompanied death. the scent of decay, which began almost immediately. with embalming fluids, it could be masked, but even those fluids gave the distinct stench of the stale nothing. 

this body, like so many others he’d visited throughout the years, was still fresh. as was the soul that had been housed within it. this was routine, this was expected. what had not been expected, however, was the being clinging closely to the corpse. where this was hardly the first time he’d seen a relative hold tight to their recently dearly departed, this was the first instance where such a relative could see his presence.

pale hues fix upon the woman. it was rare that he found himself so taken aback by another. but she could see him, and he her. what others might have missed he could see so clearly. how she herself hovered just beyond the veil, and how quickly she would soon become something beyond death.

[ bite ] your muse biting mine. 

  IT lets out an unhappy roar when she bit it, sure it did not hurt much. However it was a bit of a shock and it was none to happy about what just happened. ITs teeth grow through its gums and over its bucked ones, eyes rolling up as they glow unhappily. A gloved hand coming up to grab her jaw, bringing her face close to its so it could grow an drool in her face before tossing her with a lot fo force to the side. Annoyed and shaking, even the bells that chime seem upset.

    --- - - “ let her go,   you idiots -- ” tone curt and sharp enough to slit the throat of every guard that has her in hand.    talbot looks her up and down,   unimpressed as always.    “ you know he hates it when you don’t call first. ”    he crosses his arms over his chest,   one eyebrow raised and awaiting whatever excuse she has this time.    a sister,   sure,   blood... whatever.    “ he isn’t here,   anyway.    so what do you want? ”  @musewritten​ !!

❝  nobody likes a whiner, hadley.   ❞   and although that may have been the truth, it didn’t necessarily mean she was   exaggerating.   under even the best of circumstances eric was   iffy   when it came to food            often not hungry or just plain uninterested in what was set before him. what could occasionally be a problem when it came to getting nutrition was no doubt a plus when the group had less than stellar options to choose from. when you weren’t looking forward to the good, the bad wasn’t that big of a step down.

not quite able to relate, but trying to sympathize nonetheless, eric glanced down at the more than half full plate and tried to think of a solution.   ❝  on a scale of one to ten,   ❞   he began, remembering those early years when gracie’s and hadley’s taste buds would have gotten along swimmingly.   ❝  how helpful would it be if we played the airplane game? you open up, i’ll make engine noises...you get the idea.   ❞   he was   kidding,   but may have been secretly willing to give it a shot.

Dark lensed glasses had been removed from his face to clean them off. Honestly, it was such a wonder how any sort of lense could get dirty so damn fast. One of these days he should just perform a small miracle so that no dust or grime ever settled on any pair he owned. It was a consideration he had pondered many years but never got around to it. The demon hadn’t considered he might be observed upon.

Hearing the compliment made him jump a bit. Not so much in the surprise but partially because he didn’t expect anyone to compliment his eyes. He didn’t think he deserved such a compliment.

“I’m not sure if you’re being serious about that or not. I would think I’d get a reaction more along the lines of what is wrong with your eyes or being called a monster.”

Rattling. The sound of metal clumsily shaking against a wider frame awoke Mina from the depths of her slumber. It was faint initially, her mind still ensnared in the depths of her dreams that it did not appear immediately apparent the source of such a strange sound was coming from the very room she lay her head in. As it grew louder with each moment her consciousness slipped into waking, doe eyes began to blink the remaining confusion and sleep from her gaze as shapes came into form within the moonlit bedroom. 

Bleary eyes instinctively fell to the bed where her beloved friend lay, shock suddenly jolting Mina upright to observe Lucy’s pale cotton quilt and pillow strewn aside hastily to reveal an empty bed. Head darted sharply about the room, attempting to decipher further shapes within the moonlight until her gaze fell upon the source of the rattling. 

Lucy. Stood as white as a ghost in her nightgown, hovering by the locked door, her trembling hand clumsily attempting to insert the key into the lock over and over again. Her beautiful curls catching silver in the moonlight as her features remained firmly fixed upon the carvings of the door panels.
