This song means a lot to me... I wrote it at a time when I was struggling with another round of relapse with my drug of choice, which made me content escaping everything that ailed me, but also sapped the Life outta me. It felt like I was skimming across the surface of life... I needed courage to surrender to not knowing the answers, to not feeling pain, to the full gamut of my my Life Force... anger, fear, sadness just as essential to our experience in this human form as is JOY, but that was something I didn’t know how to do yet. It’s still hard, but this song marks one of the moments where a layer was peeled back in my unlearning. Ya knowuddamean? Feels really super relevant right now, in a time where I feel like the more we can be willing to not know the answers, and just surrender to the change to the learning and unlearning, and listen to the Old River whispering, every day, in every moment, in our ears and hearts as unique pinpoints thru which godlight shines through, the betterer. A proud polyamorous pansexual polyglot who's partial to alliteration, she writes songs that are all over the map, lyrically and musically, and sings them while playing guitar, or piano, or ukulele, on her own or with a band or a vocal trio or perhaps she'll ditch all that and pick up the cello. She thrives off constantly learning and forging her own path, but has spent a lot of her life trying to fit herself into tidy boxes that squeeze her in all the wrong places. Born to an opera singer mother and prospector father in a logging town in BC, Canada, she fell in love and moved to Sydney when she was 18 where she studied architecture & sustainable design. Madeline's been living the SF Bay Area since 2006, with frequent jaunts to Montreal, Europe and other places to keep her and her friends confused. These days she's thoroughly enjoying being made to stay put for once, petting the cat, feeding the sourdough, and concocting plans to make the world a better place for all Earthlings.
