Why is it that we only hear from so-called peaceful muslims like yourself when you are whining about some sort of slight against a muslim or islam? Why don't you and your brethren speak out about the bombings, beheadings, rapes, tortures, etc, etc, etc, all in the name of islam? Why no American flag outside your mosques? These are all rhetorical questions, to which most of us already have the answer. You wonder why the hate and mistrust. Look in the mirror.
Muslims have condemned violence in the name of Islam over and over - my question for you is: why do you think you have not heard about their condemnations? Major Muslim institutions, orgs, and clerics have vehemently condemned ISIS, Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, etc. Perhaps you were sleeping? The media certainly was - and the result is people like you asking “why don’t those Muslims condemn terrorism??” as we shout from the rooftops “we are!”. It is not our fault that the media lies by omission and it’s certainly not our fault that people like you are too lazy to use Google.
I don’t know what your race or ethnicity is - but I will say that if you are white, no one is asking you to apologize for the KKK. So why ask everyday Muslims to apologize for extremists that they have nothing to do with? I do believe we must strongly condemn these murderers, to take our religion back from the nutjobs who are hijacking it - but condemnation is not the same thing as apology. Condemnation = an FU to lunatics who claim to represent us. Apology = agreement with racist and reductionist ideology that demands collective responsibility for minorities. If you are white, you are not apologizing for serial killers, shootings in movie theaters, schools, neo-Nazi skinheads, etc. To demand that you should, simply because of your skin color, is ludicrous.
I also wonder if you check churches and synagogues for American flags. While I am sure that some mosques do have American flags, it’s also worth noting that we do not need to prove our patriotism to bigots. Your question insinuates that you find Muslims to be less American than you. This is false. We are your teachers, doctors, entertainers, co-workers, community members, local shop owners, etc and many of us came to this country in pursuit of the American dream. We do not have to prove anything to you.
Your question was anything but rhetorical. Have a nice day.
