Arsenal Girls (but I wrote this in 2023)
The wind gently rattles off the car as we steadily make our way down the motorway. It took us far longer than it should have to get out of the house this morning, but I don't really mind. Everything has mostly, probably, kind of, been smooth sailing. Viv raises her left hand up, keeping her right on the wheel, and I reach out and hold onto it. "Beth, I want my coffee, not your hand." I roll my eyes, but obligingly pass over her takeaway cup. I take a sip from mine as well. We certainly deserve this coffee after the morning we've had.
Last night we made an attempt to pack our suitcases. Well, by we I mean Viv. I was entirely distracted trying to beat Katie at a game of Yahtzee. I don't know why we decided to play Yahtzee. Neither of us have the patience for that game, but we were both so determined to win. Unfortunately Katie ended up winning. I'm convinced that we forgot to write some of the scores down, but Viv added it up for us, and I trust her maths. After Katie left it was almost midnight, so we decided we'd better go to bed.
This morning I woke up to my alarm at 7. This was plenty of time to get ready, walk the dogs, and pack my things up for our weekend away, as we aimed to leave at about 9. The day started off as usual. I feed the dogs, had a shower, and got dressed, before heading down to the kitchen. Viv was sitting at the kitchen table, her computer open in front of her, and a worried expression on her face. "What's happened?" I asked, as I opened the cupboards. "The place we booked to stay at has no record of us making a booking," she replied, while I began to hunt through the cupboards. "It's okay Viv. We'll find somewhere," I assured her, before asking, "do you know where the cereal is?" "I packed it last night."
I refrained from sighing dramatically at the fact I now had to search through the bags in order to have breakfast, knowing that it would increase Viv's stress levels. I fully intended to go back into the kitchen and help her search for a new place to stay, but then I noticed Rona and Myle sitting down patiently by the door. That was strange, so I went to investigate. I opened the door to find Katie standing there, with a backpack on her shoulders, and her phone in her hand. She looks up at me in shock as if she isn't the one who's unexpectedly turned up to my house.
"Katie!" I greeted her, "how can I help ya?" "Can I come with you and Viv on your trip?" she blurted out. I considered this for a second. "I'm alright with it. I'll have to check with Viv." This was unusual behaviour for Katie, and I could tell something it was up, so of course I had no problem with her coming on the trip.
I lead her through into the living room, and discovered a mess across the floor. In the couple of minutes it took for me to talk to Katie, Myle decided that it would be fun to go through the items Viv packed last night. There were clothes scattered all around the place, but what annoyed me the most was the cereal box that was in between her jaws. Rona lay on her bed off to the side with a mischievous look in her eyes watching the entire thing. We'd hoped she'd be a good influence on her younger sister, but she just lets her get into trouble, and seems to find it very entertaining.
"Okay, Myle girl, I love you," I said, while picking her up and taking the cereal box out of her mouth, "but this is a very naughty thing to do. Your mum is not going to be very happy with this." I took the puppy outside, and called Rona over. Those two couldn't cause anymore trouble inside the house if I left them in the backyard. We covered up the hole they tried to dig the other week, and they've got plenty of toys, so they'd be fine.
As I entered the house again, I saw that Katie had made herself at home, and Viv had discovered the mess in the living room. "Beth, what happened?" "The dogs," I replied. "Hasn't enough gone wrong this morning? And apparently Katie's coming on the trip now? I found a new place, by the way. Do you know how hard it is to find a house that allows dogs at such short notice? Now we have to pack everything again? Have you even started packing? " she rambled off rapidly. "How about Katie and I pack this all back up, and you go and get ready for the day?" I suggested. "Okay," she agreed before heading off to have a shower.
Katie looked up from her phone, apparently not having heard any of what was just said. "I feel like it'd be a good idea if we cleaned up this mess," she suggested. I just laughed at her, before I knelt down and started to fold up a top. "What?" she genuinely asked as she joined me on the ground. "Nothing."
By the time Viv was dressed, Katie and I had packed up the bags, I'd packed my own suitcase, and we'd gotten into the car, things were looking slightly better. Viv started the car, and we backed out of the driveway, before we heard a loud popping sound. "That didn't sound good," Katie pointed out the obvious. Viv glared at her in the rear vision mirror before getting out of the car. I joined her, to find that the back tyre had a stone stuck in it, and was slightly deflated. "Well I guess we have to deal with this now," Viv sighed. "I'll help!" I said as cheerfully as I could. Viv looked across at me as I skipped to the car boot, and opened it. She rolled her eyes at me, but I saw that smile she tried to conceal.
Twenty minutes later we were both back in the car, ready to start our trip again. Katie had somehow fallen asleep while we were changing the tyre. She must of been really tired, because it was not exactly a quiet task. We drove down the road, and stopped at our favourite coffee place for some coffee to takeaway, which lead us to this moment. Both Viv and I drinking our coffee as we finally head of on our weekend break.
We've been travelling for about an hour when Katie begins to stir in the back seat. She opens and closes her eyes a few times, before realising where she is. "Did you not sleep very well last night?" I ask. "Not at all," she admits, before asking, "where are your dogs?" A surge of panic flows through me, and Viv immediately indicates to change lanes, so we can get off the motorway at the next exit which is quickly approaching.
"How did we?" Viv asks. "I don't even." "But, like, how?" "It was a busy." "Still." "Okay, can you stop speaking in half sentences?" Katie asks, "I'm here too. I want to be included." Viv gives her another glare, but Katie doesn't seem to notice. She's back on her phone.
Viv gets back onto the motorway, heading towards home. I get out my phone and cycle through the calling teammates' phone numbers, hoping someone will pick up, and can go to check if the dogs are okay. I know they should be fine, but Myle's still little, and I don't like the thought of her only having Rona to rely on. No one picks up, so I send a text to the group chat telling people what's happened, and where we keep our spare key.
The next hours journey back home, there's a tense atmosphere in the car. Katie's obviously going through something. She falls asleep again for about twenty minutes, and then spends the rest of the time on her phone. I take sips of my coffee while talking about literally anything, and Viv just nods along. As we pull into the driveway, she jumps out of the car, and I quickly follow suit. Katie, to the surprise of nobody, has fallen asleep again.
The front door's already unlocked as Viv opens it, and I can see her sigh a breath of relief. We walk into the living room to find Leah and Jen, each with a dog in their laps. Jen's phone is placed on a few books stacked on the coffee table, and Jen appears to be teaching a very unenthusiastic Leah how to move Myle's paws to make it look like she's doing a dance.
"Are you filming a TikTok with our dogs?" Viv asks. "Believe me, this was not my idea," Leah replies. "I'll take your place!" I say, and go and sit down next to Jen on the couch. "No!" both Viv and Jen protest at the same time. "Leah agreeing to a TikTok is not an opportunity you pass," Jen explains. "Also, we've got to take the dogs and finally go on our trip," Viv adds. "You're going on a trip?" Leah asks. "Can we come?" Jen questions. "Fine," Viv agrees, "but wait to make the TikTok till after we get there. We really need to get on the road."
All six of us, that includes the dogs, make out way out of the house and into the car. Katie's still asleep, and I'm sure she'll have questions when she wakes up to find two extra people, and two dogs in the back of the car with her. We pull out of the driveway for hopefully the final time this morning, as Leah connects her phone to the car speakers via bluetooth. "Woo! Road Trip!" Jen shouts, as Leah begins to play her music. Katie somehow sleeps through this. "I'm sorry. I know this was supposed to be a quiet weekend away with just us, Rona, and Myle," I lean over and whisper to Viv. "It's okay," Viv assures me, "I actually like having people around, sometimes, as long as I don't have to participate in their stupid ideas." I grab a hold of her hand, and this time she doesn't complain. There's even a slight smile on her face.
With that Jen and I start to sing mostly correct song lyrics at the top of our lungs. Leah's smiling, but it'll take her a while to join in with the singing. Katie's still asleep, Rona curled up by her feet, and Myle having made herself at home in Katie's lap. It might have been a rocky start to the weekend, but I know we're going to have a lot of fun.
