What You're Selling (Barret/Myrna - Final Fantasy VII)

( for day 2 of @romancingbarret 💖 based on a thing from Rebirth, but nothing super spoilery! )

Barret never cared for the mines. Not the arduous work involved with them, the logistics of selling coal, the eyesore it always was, none of it. And he especially didn’t appreciate the fact his fate was sealed the moment he was born into Corel. Everyone who lived there was involved with the mines to some capacity. No escaping that.

Even so, Barret took every opportunity to evade the inevitable. He was still young, after all! Why not enjoy what was left of it before he added his timecard to the rack? So he did, much to his parents’ dismay, and spent his days as carefree as the wind. Didn’t matter if he hiked the mountain trails or shot glass bottles with a BB gun by the desert border—it sure as hell beat sweating his ass off in the cramped mines.

“If you’re plannin’ on livin’ here,” his father said during dinner, “you best be thinkin’ ‘bout work.”

Barret huffed. “You kiddin’ me? I’m skippin’ this town the first chance I get!”

His mother frowned. As for his father, he cackled at Barret’s cavalier remark.

“That so?” He grinned from across the table. “And with what money, might I ask? Would love to hear how you’ll manage that!”

Barret barely slept that night, his father’s words echoing in his mind. Come morning, he scraped together whatever gil he could find in his room. Not even enough to afford a chocobo carriage. Perhaps he could ask around the neighborhood for odd jobs to fatten his wallet, but the only work with a steady cash flow was his least favorite option.
