💔 - I have utmost respect for embroiderers, because I don’t have the patience for it, at all. Most needle-and-thread craft skills are beyond me, I’d like to be able to sew clothing some day but I just don’t enjoy the process, unfortunately.

🐻 - Cutest thing I’ve made might be the series of crocheted nipple brooches I made some years ago.. Usually my things don’t intentionally aim for cuteness, and it’s tricky for me to imagine what cuteness would even mean in a woven textile. Something to think about for sure!

I didn’t! She already had a name, and I didn’t really realise that I could change it if I wanted to? But I also adopted her from like. My sister in law’s cousin, so they ask how she’s doing sometimes, and that would be weird if I’d changed it I think. But her name is Lille My (as in the moomin character Little My), both parts of which mean small. Because she is small and people still ask if she’s a kitten even though she’s turning 11 soon.2: What is your favourite thing about your cat?

She’s very soft and cuddly.

No, I actually have given away all my previous blankets! I gave away my last blanket as a gift before starting work on this one.  I’ll enjoy this one for however long and someday I will find it a new home with someone who will love it and then make another blanket.

we’ll focus on that bit, but i’ll give you bonus commentary for other bits as well as it comes to mind. i will not talk about…all of it. i’m shy and ace. this also got. a bit long.

the bit about darning quite badly is lifted from one of the books - ruth says that peter likes to darn his own socks, but not very well, and that there’s something quite pleasing and endearing about finding this darning in the laundry. i, in turn, think that’s pleasing and endearing - so much so that it also features a little in thomas the rhymer.

the broken finger is also lifted from the books; in peter’s case during a football tackle. at some point before or during victorian farm alex also broke his finger wrangling sheep. honestly, boys.

peter is not worse than washing a dog. washing dogs is Really Hard Work.

here we are. look, if you’ve never had your hair washed by someone else, you’re honestly missing out. it’s brilliant. warm water plus head massage is the ideal life. it’s a good way to relax and feel good and i know other people are into other things, but i think three people who are relaxed and feel good are going to have a better time when it comes to the later bit that makes me blush. the point here is to get the characters to a point where they’re actively enjoying themselves; prior to this, peter’s a bit stressed/anxious and obvs alex and ruth know that and can’t have a great time while he isn’t. they’re friends and they love each other and everything relaxes a bit after this. it breaks the initial awkwardness because, hey, this could be fun after all. it’s also fairly key that they settle into a centred position: there’s a visual harmony and symmetry when all three get involved and everyone’s happiest then, working together. i like this passage, it’s calm and fond.

then it all gets a bit. ahem. i will say, though, that edwardian corsets seem poorly designed for the larger-busted lady. this tangent distracted me from my task on multiple occasions and if that isn’t an ace face then idk what is.

i literally wrote this paragraph and it’s so frustrating. peter, he loves both of you. ffs. stop pining.

at some point i think i’ll write a historical au, but it probably won’t be this bodice-ripper-y. not sure if it will look anything like this at all, actually, but the idea is there.

mmm, sexy shaving. i think something one can note about this fic is that whenever it gets too sexy i put in some fairly unsexy dialogue to break it up. i think this sort of works for the tone and also means i’m not trying to constantly build tension, but still. never get too sexy. start talking about knives and engaging in Normal Friendly Banter.

aaaand we’re back to the massaging and symmetry. starting to wonder what this says about me, to be honest.

nothing so sexy as sharing a three-legged stool and holding a knife to someone’s throat. i don’t know anything about sex.

hell yeah three times for visual symmetry it’s a motif now and i’m a literary genius 😎 🤦‍♀️

was that passage almost erotic? fear not, for now we talk about period-typical hairstyles for a bit, and then use folk songs to flirt. the latter part, admittedly, is probably not very new or novel. most folk songs are about sex, death and landscapes - the potential is endless.

there’s a little more soft and gentle relaxing here, before we really commit. i was very shy about writing this and even more so about posting it and this is the point where that really starts to bite.

more slam-the-brakes-on dialogue. and if you don’t think consent is sexy, this passage has been described as “so sweet.” that may not have proved my point exactly. but i’m determined to get good explicit consent at every turn. “our ruth” is, incidentally, such a british thing to say.

I’M A STRONG INDEPENDENT WOMAN AND I WOULD QUITE LIKE A LARGE STRONG MAN TO PICK ME UP AND CARRY ME PLACES PLEASE.

(note: mum just came in. “you don’t need to hide what you’re doing it’s alright” naaaah i’m gonna.)

i write because i get scenes stuck in my head and i have to exorcise them somehow. the whole table passage, pretty much from “at least where i can watch” to “ the farm waits for no man” was one such scene. particularly piled up on the table and talking about feelings.

peter’s awkward adoration (and the lifting, a little bit) was informed by sign of the times which is very good/soft/sad

ooh body positivity. important for all. tell ur local larger gentleman he’s a good shape. it is possible that my type is large and a little squishy.

now we get into normality returning, which is another beloved segment. now they’re in LOVE and they can TALK but more importantly, they do the same things in the same way as they ever did because they’ve really been in love forever and i’m a soppy romantic.

i cannot explain to you why i went on a church tangent, only that i did. i suspect it’s a hangover from my latent desire to write actual period fic with period attitudes that are overcome through the power of true love, the inherent goodness of mankind, and rural ability to isolate oneself on a farm.

ruth hooks her arms into alex and peter’s at the end of e. farm because they’re sad about saying goodbye to the horses. it’s ridiculously sweet but also very natural, and i like the idea that it’s something they’ve done before.

aww it’s the end and they’re all happy again. possibly a little saccharine, but well. i am, as previously discussed, a soppy romantic.

this was much longer than i expected. it turns out i have Thoughts on Things and like talking about my stuff. if this was at all interesting, therefore, i’d be happy to do it again, though it would feature less ur local ace is confused about what she herself wrote and why re: erotica. thanks for asking!
