my head canon is that on a night in 2005 Martin discovered "the microphones" through a random post while scrolling through Facebook. he was obsessed with them ever since, because he never heard something quite like this. this is also what inspired him to start writing his own poetry.

Do you think that while Edwin was trying to escape hell, he ever thought that, because of the supernatural aspect of his death, he could do so alive?

I mean, they have reflections and theoretically can feel things in Hell like pain and torture. When the demon first took him, it was described as "taking him to hell" as opposed to "killing him and taking him to hell." He wouldn't necessarily know right off the bat that he was not just in hell, but dead, as in without a body, as in can not be alive again.

Granted, Edwin's really smart and it's not too big a stretch to say that when you find yourself in a place you know as an afterlife, regardless of how you got there, that there's a very real possibly that you could be dead. (See: Charles telling Crystal she can't go to Hell because "nothing comes back from Hell alive") But also, as far as we know, getting sacrificed to a demon was Edwin's first brush with anything supernatural, magical, or what have you. Not to mention, he was scared out of his mind and was probably not spending the majority of his mental efforts on the rules and logistics of traveling to different spiritual planes.

But again, that's exactly the sort of thing Edwin would consider once he did get a moment to think, so my question really is, when did it first occur to him that when he escaped Hell, he wouldn't have a life to go back to?

Also, maybe the demons torturing him used that information to dash his hope as a form of torment?

Maybe when he was killed in a more understandable fashion by the doll spider and/or other demons, it felt final for the first time, and he further lost hope in being alive again?

Or, on the off chance that he didn't find out or figure it out himself, did it take him first stepping out of Hell as a ghost and wondering why he couldn't feel anything and why no one could see him, to acknowledge that he really was dead?
