I went to Florida last week! It was to watch my sister compete in a competitive cheerleading competition, but I was able to get some birding in as well :) We went on a little boat tour that got me close to a rookery, where I got to see so many scrungly birds!

I also got 6 lifers on the trip for anyone who's into birding: Short-tailed Hawk, Snail Kite, Swallow-tailed Kite, Gray Kingbird, Nanday Parakeet, and Blue-crowned Parakeet! As amazing it is to see wild parakeets, I think the Swallow-tailed Kite was the highlight species for me.

A pair of Black-hooded Parakeet (Nanday Parakeet) "Lovebirds" hanging out together at Fort Desoto. Another non-native species that now has several established populations throughout the state.

August 22, 2022 - Nanday Parakeet, Black-hooded Parakeet, or Nanday Conure (Aratinga nenday)

These parrots are found in central South America in open woodlands and grasslands with some trees and have also been introduced to parts of the United States and Europe. They eat seeds, fruit, nuts, and berries, foraging in flocks. Nesting in tree cavities, females lay clutches of two to five eggs and incubate them alone.

Yesterday's birb, the nanday parakeet. I found a ref I really liked for these guys but I wasn't up to drawing four birbs in my usual manner, so I did some quick ones.
