AU where Ulmo is *really* committed to making sure Nargathrond and Gondolin make it through the First Age and tells Turgon and Finrod to build their cities underwater.
He plans to use some of his power to give them gills.
He does not tell them this.
Eventually he figures out that he should probably explain himself but Turgon and Finrod both spend a few very panicked months trying to reinvent the entire field of architecture.
AKA: Look, a Finrod-related post that is not about Athrabeth!
So, I've seen conflicting statements about how Nargathrond came to be:
the Dwarves helped Finrod build the city and got paid
Finrod (or at least the Noldor) chased the Dwarves out
there was a genocide
one of the Dwarves tried to murder Finrod in his sleep
???
I have an idea how to make it all make sense, without making Finrod a genocidal maniac, or even a bad person, nor making the Dwarves greedy, lying and/or sub-human.
It's all about how you give gifts.
In some cultures gift-giving works like this:
A: So, what do you like to get as gifts?
B: IDK, books?
[later]
A: This is for you.
B: *unwraps the Silmarillion" Cool, thanks!
And in others it's kinda like this:
A: This rug looks nice.
B: [now 100% obliged to give A the rug]: Thank you. Here, have it.
A: [fully aware and wanting the rug]: I cannot.
B: I insist.
A: I would never.
B: Please, I cannot let you not have it.
A: If you insist. [had to be asked 3 times because that's how You Do It]
Of course those are extremes, and I'm sorry if I represented it badly. I'm very much a Type 1 person.
Anyway: from the Valar-asking-for-Silamrils situation, and Feanor-asking-for-boats, we know that Noldor are Type 1 (Just Ask).
But. What if the Dwarves, at least "Petty" Dwarves, are Type 2 (Subtext)? It could go something like this:
Finrod: Wow, nice cave! Awesome! I love it! :D
Dwarves: [now have to offer it and Finrod sounds very pushy about wanting it]: If you want to build your city here, you're welcome.
Expectation-Finrod: *realizes his faux-pas* no, of course not! (protests more than 3 times and the Dwarves can keep their homeland)
Actual Finrod: *surprised, tries osanwe, which is his default way of solving cultural misunderstandings, but the Dwarves are not open to it* Are you sure?
Dwarves: [he refused for the first time... ok, 2 more to go] Yes, sure, take it.
Finrod: Cool, I love you guys! I will have a fountain here and a tower there...
Dwarves: [murder on their mind]: do you want us to help you with building it?
Finrod: If you can? sure, that would be great. I will pay you, of course. [negotiating the payment is a similar type of disaster]
Some other Noldor: Maybe actually do some stealing and Dwarf-killing behind Finrod's back.
Dwarves, tired, underpaid, their homeland stolen: *finally snap and try to assassinate Finrod*
Finrod: ??? *exiles the guilty, he wouldn't do an exacution, he's too nice*
Other Dwarves: Leave too, because of lack of place to live, misunderstandings, a few nasty Noldor, and solidarity to the exiled ones.
Elven history: Petty Dwarves are greedy murder-psychos.
Dwarven history: The Noldor stole our land and killed our ancestors.
Morgoth, somewhere: *chuckles* Language and complicated cultures are the best thing ever.
Similarly as with Andredh, when Finrod is happy, he gets somewhat blind about other people's negative feelings and sometimes assumes that everyone agrees with his enthusiasm. Some people are like that. It's not a moral failing. (Also, this is why when you meet a cool blond Elf, you should let him osanwe you. Totally. No exceptions. I'm sure Celebrimbor knew this rule :) )
Remember when Beren steals Curufin’s weapons, and the knife he’s carrying is dwarven make?
Like, Curufin is the crafty Feanorian brother, he’s his dad’s favorite, he’s the one who inherited his talent from the greatest smith of all time. He is literally Feanor Jr.
And he has fallen so far, is so consumed by his oath, has lost so much, that he trusts someone else’s forgework over his own? And let’s be clear, Telchar of Nogrod, who forged this knife and Narsil was legendary.
But was he as legendary as Curufinwe Atarinke Feanorian? At least, is he likely to be thought so by Curufin himself?
Was Curufin even making anything anymore, or was that part of himself something he lost far before he arrived at Nargathrond?
Any hc‘s on environment in western beleriand/nargothrond? 👀
This wasn't exactly a flora and fauna post (though I can do one!) but I still thought I should put the usual flora and fauna info! Especially since I want to explore more environment and geography in general.
flora and fauna of Arda
Disclaimer: I used both what we can extrapolate is likely indigenous to the region based on descriptions of the landscape and climate as well as my own headcanons and inspirations and reference books on similar habitats as well as books like The Atlas of Middle Earth and The Flora of Middle Earth
I really love working on and researching these! and as always feel free to ask more, even if I’ve already done a place I’d always enjoy going into more detail of tacking a more specific kind of life there
I go into Flora and fauna of Talath Dirnen and the River Narog here
-Western Beleriand was divided from the East by the River Sirion. It faced the sea, Belegaer, to the West on the coast of Falas.
-Several rivers ran to estuaries, bays, and the ocean here including the river Nenning and Brithon (when I post my flora and fauna of the Havens of Falas I’ll talk more about this.)
-There were also smaller rivers, tributaries to Sirion including Taeglin (sometimes spelled Teiglin), Mauduin, Rivil, and Narog (which has its own tributaries, Ginglith and Ringwil).
-Parts of the river Narog flow underground and have species not found elsewhere in Beleriand outside of the deeper realms of Angband rarely considered by its own inhabitants. On a similar note, Nargothrond is one of the few places outside these deeper parts of Angband (not including marine life) where bioluminescence is found. There are a few bioluminescent species of algae and moss in Menengroth and Nan Emloth as well.
-West Beleriand consisted of lowlands and bottomlands (the usually flatter floodlands along a watercourse), plains and hilly areas and moorlands. There were also more scattered forested areas and woodlands, as well as the denser Forest of Brethil.
-The climate was mild though humid without either harsh winters or hotter summers. Colder fronts did occasionally arise from the Encircling Mountains however. The coastal regions, especially around Nevrast, are somewhat warmer and gentler.
-Biodiversity is highest in these regions and in the surrounding marshlands and smaller forests.
-Farming could be difficult at times and much food was gathered through foraging and cultivating existing plants. There were seeds traded and grown however especially in Brethil but also along the plains outside of Nargathrond. These were not considered parts off the kingdom itself but were at times tended to by its elves. Edible flowers, root vegetables, and some orchard trees were the most commonly grown. -One estimate from The Lost Road puts the region at 99 leagues across at its widest -Nargothrond is somewhat cooler in the underground than the surrounding plains. However its walls can also protect against the worst winters. It is lit by lanterns and by certain bioluminescent plants. There are windows in key areas that allow sunlight to filter into some of the larger halls. Much inspiration of the architecture and environment comes from Menengroth. -There are small gardens within Nargothrond, some of species that do not require direct sunlight, some stationed in the areas where sunlight filters in. In one of the larger halls with windows on the ceiling, butterflies aid in the pollination of the garden. -A small tributary of the river Narog flows directly through one of the great halls of Nargothrond. Its flora and fauna remain untouched by the elves and algae and aquatic plants as well as small fish, salamanders in their early stages, and stranger creatures are visible to see for those who walk along it.
Reembodied Finrod and Turgon rekindling their boyhood friendship with a joint city planning project where they pick a mountain and Turgon plans the outside and Finrod does the basement.
Finrod and Turgon completely sabotaging their boyhood friendship with a joint city planning project where they try to make the styles of Nargathrond and Gondolin fit together cohesively.
Elenwe and Amarie having tea while their husbands yell (WE ARE NOT YELLING THIS IS A REASONED DEBATE) at each other outside and discussing how this is the happiest they’ve seen their husbands in ages.
I’m just saying, if Finrod REALLY wanted to help his fave line-o-men fight Sauron he could have cursed all his vassals who broke their oaths of loyalty to him in Nargathrond, Isildur style, and since Nargathrond falls, Aragorn could have had an undead army of elves to go with his mountain men.
I mean, he would have needed a submarine to summon them but imagine a bunch of rabid first age elves whose spirits weren’t allowed to go to mandos streaming up the shore out of the waves, and passing Maglor doing his drama kid penance, and him just yelling “FUCKING OATHS RIGHT?” after them.
… actually who had the ring of barahir in the second age? Elros took it, right? And Elendil would have had it for the last alliance- WE COULD HAVE THEORETICALLY AVOIDED ALL THIS SHIT but noooo Finrod had to be NICE.
… or an forsworn undead high elf could have taken the ring and made it worse.
