What is Styx's relationship with Percy in the Marriage of Loyalty?
Ngl Styx did not like her at first.
It was nothing personal, but the river goddess did not understand how this personification of sugary sweetness was going to hold anyone to their oaths.
At best styx thought this meant she woukd be expected to hold others to their oaths on someone elses name, at worse she could foresee gods trying to use this niave goddess to get out of making oaths on her river and being held accountable
Most likely though the goddess would end up relying on fear of her father and mothers wrath to force people into keeping their oaths and vows
But time passes and Styx begins hearing rumours about how Lady Loyalty is so lovely that breaking an oath on her name will turn reality itself against you.
This is bullshit but now Styx is curious so she goes to investigate.
I would like to point out that up until now Styx has never actually met Persedione, merely heard rumours and such.
When the Goddess of Hate finally meets Lady Loyalty she finds herself laughing uncontrollably.
This is their paragon of goodness and virtue?
Oh, Persedione is sweet and kind, loyal beyond fault and caring. But she is a goddess of dualities and for her love to be all encompassing? So too must be her Hate.
Styx looks at this goddess who wears her kindness like a cloak to hide the hate and wrath sown into her bones and knows exactly where the rumours of 'reality itself punishing oath breakers that take her name in vain'.
It's clever.
The goddess in question wont have to deal with gods running to zeus in order to weasel out of their punishments nor the risk of retribution from fools who refuse to shoulder the consequences of theor own actions.
Still giggling at how little the greek pantheon understands its newest goddess, Styx had invited her for tea.
The two ended up good friends much to everyone elses horror as noone else could understand how the two goddesses could get along when they were so contrary in nature.
Styx and Persedione are ride or die for each other and will trade tips on how to punish specific gods.
When Persedione is forced into marriage Styx tells her she'll rip her husband to shreds if he breaks his vows.
The smile Perse gives her is bitter and edged in prophecy as she whispers to her softly that Apollo is too clever to break his vows in anything other then spirit.
Styx feels their marriage vows warp under the weight of Apollos abuse amd rages.
The two goddess of oath are trapped, unable to lash out as Apollo pushes but never truly breaks his vows. Finding more and more loopholes to twist or exploit.
The day Styx feels their marriage vows dissolve is a relief. As one of the few people who knew of the potion Persedion had asked Thanatos for she had been waiting for her friend to join them in the Underworld for centuries.
As Thanatos guides Persediones soul to Erebus, Styx is waiting to greet them at the doors of death.
//: to clarify Perse is gaslight, girlboss gatekeeping anyone stupid enough to break oaths made on her name by gods and mortals alike.
Mortals who break serious oaths intentionally are driven insane, lesser or accidental oathbreakers feel like they're being haunted until they atone.
Gods meanwhile are being psychologically tortured because physical injuries heal, trauma us forever.
Especially for immortals.
Oaths are super important In Norse Paganism and not something you can just back out of. They're very serious and intimidating.
So I do this cool fucking thing where I literally never make oaths or commit to anything
Incorrect Quote #17: Gremlins
Note: Inspired by @anotheroceanid 's Athenide AU. Loosely based on a scene from Ouran High School Host Club.
Ares: [smirks, leaning in] Perse, I want some. [takes a bite of the ambrosia straight from her lips]
Hermes: [grinning] Oh, and youāve got some nectar on your cheek. [leans in and licks it off without hesitation]
Apollo: [clutching his chest] YOU ARENāT REACTING?! WHY ARENāT YOU REACTING?! [grabs Perseās face, eyes wild with divine outrage]
Perse: [grinning mischievously] You know, Apollo, this could be considered sexual harassment.
Apollo: [staggering back like a tragic hero in an epic] THIS is sexual harassment?! They just FEAST on you like starving mortals at a divine banquet, and IāM the one in trouble?! If what I do is sexual harassment, then THEY should be banished to the edges of Tartarus for all eternity!
Ares: [unbothered, still chewing] Worth it.
Hermes: [grinning, wiping his mouth] No regrets.
Apollo: [gripping his golden curls in despair] THIS IS A TRAVESTY! ITāS LITERALLY AN OATH! No one is supposed to pursue you! The entire pantheon swore on the River Styx that you are off-limits! Your father is Poseidon! Your mother is Athena! Even ZEUSāZEUSāthinks twice before crossing that boundary!
Perse: [smirking, completely unbothered] And yet, here we are.
Poseidon and Athena, materializing in a storm of divine fury: Who do we need to smite?
Apollo, pointing wildly at Ares and Hermes: THEM! ARREST THEM! I AM INNOCENT!
Ares and Hermes, already running for their immortal lives: NO REGRETS!
How does being the judge work? like is it a secret that only the king will know the identity of the judge? do you get anything special abilities being the judge?
The Judge is one of the four magical Oaths that protect monster kind.
(Asgore holds the Oath of the Crown, Toriel the Oath of the Guardian and Undyne the Oath of the Hero once held by Gerson, we can assume the Judge was also once held by someoneā¦)
The Oaths arenāt widely known outside of the court and many monsters donāt even know that something like that exists outside of a title.
Before being sealed away, these Oaths were magical in nature but more of a āsoft titleā, it was a role of duty and sometimes the magic would nudge the monster under the Oath in the right direction.
But since being sealed away magic has become much more concentrated. The monsters have never been so entwined with magic as they are now and the Oaths become a powerful force, with the consequences for breaking them becoming very severe on the one under that Oath.
As for special abilities, the Judge is able to determine where LV has come from and goes further to judge out who should be punished, all for the protection of magic and monsterkind. Since being sealed away it means literally to uphold the magical sanctity of their world, as magic is so strongly tied to hope, love, goodness etc, if there are sinners sowing violence it can corrupt the magic and negatively affect everyone. So the Judgeās duty is to protect not only monsters but also the magical realm.
Basically, The Judge holds the power to see the truth of things and is obliged to place judgement on that which is a harm monsters and magic.
Swear an oath now
The world would be improved in my opinion if swearing elaborate binding oaths was more common and normal
"Oh yeah I'll be to the theater soon for sure" = terrible, weak, you will be 15 minutes late
"On my honor, we will arrive with haste" = strong, honorable, you will be early enough for a quickie in the car beforehand (important)
