Colum McCann's Narrative 4 organization is bringing the power of story to students in a time of division. The project helps young people around the world share their stories and bridge divides in politics and culture. Senior arts correspondent Jeffrey Brown reports for our series, Art in Action, exploring the intersection of art and democracy.
This school year I co-chair the #multiculturalcommittee at @lrei. Yesterday we helped host the first Open PA Equity Meeting: Raising Race Conscious Children. This series was formerly known as “How to Raise an Ally”. This is from a printout from that meeting. . We used the Narrative 4 framework to have this discussion among the parent body. Narrative 4 is about the power of “story exchange” as a way to build empathy and better connections with understanding of another person’s lived experience and perspective. In practice it requires you pair up with another individual in a group, listen to a personal story they tell you that is inspired by one of a group of prompts. The turn is you have to introduce yourself as your partner and retell their personal story to your group as if it were your own from first perspective. My partner chose to “Tell a story about a memorable radicalized event, positive or negative, and how it felt to you and how it impacted your parenting”. I chose the prompt “What story can you tell when you realized how much race matters in the way you parent?”. . When I was listening to my partners’ story, I was getting incensed at this experience. When I was retelling this story - I could feel her frustration and anger and helplessness as if I had experienced it myself. . It was a VERY moving and POWERFUL experience. It really helped me to understand how easy it is to make assumptions about the white people or white person in front of you. It really created a connection among the parent body that was refreshing and some lessons were learned. Even if for this experience, it felt like you are being seen and heard. . Again, this was a really powerful experience. . #narrative4 #empathy #blacklivesmatter #translivesmatter #womensrights #wefight #weresist #wewillwin #outfittingtherevolution #deconstructtheconstruct #blackonblackbk #itslifeordeathforus #intersectionality #civilrights #humanrights #equality #equalityforall no #racism, (at Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrI2BtnlNxR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=jagkw6u08vny

Narrative4 Fundraising Campaign
OK listen:
Narrative4 is an amazing organization doing great work and they're having a crowdriser campaign to raise money to set up story exchanges for teenagers, and I think that's good work.
If you agree with me then donate here: http://www.crowdrise.com/narrative4/fundraiser/gillbench
Donate $100 or more and you're entered to win some autographed books from a slew of fancy writers. And who doesn't love that?
And as an added bonus, if you're the person who contributes the highest gift first through the above link then I promise to either:
give you notes on any short story of yours (under 4,000 words)
write you a personalized short short story (under 1,000 words) about anything you want. And I mean anything. It could be gross, embarrassing, professionally damaging to my reputation, whatever. I'll do it!
So go to, go to! Let's make things happen!

Here's something I'm doing that you should support:
We believe sharing stories is the key to opening the world. We call it “Fearless hope through radical empathy.”
At Narrative 4, we believe the world is forever changed when we share our stories.
Although storytelling is an ancient and universal human activity, Narrative 4 helps people all over the world tell their stories in a new and powerful way. We identify those who may not have been heard—whether it be teens from the south side of Chicago or on the streets of Dublin, or under-represented youth in Kabul or in the Barrio—and offer them sanctuary to share significant stories from their lives. The key to transformation lies in the sharing: when you hear someone else’s story deeply enough to inhabit it and re-tell it as if you have lived it, you become “the other” and see the world through her eyes. The power is in the active act of receiving and caring for another’s story. It is Radical Empathy.
These story exchanges build a mutual trust that strips away cynicism and despair and creates space for Fearless Hope. New communities are formed and new narratives are created: a narrative for immigration. A narrative for the environment. A narrative for religion. A narrative for peace.
Narrative 4 was founded by a group of authors, artists, musicians, educators, students and activists dedicated to creating social change. We invite you to join us and become a part of our narrative. Our members have the opportunity to learn about upcoming story exchanges; meet the N4 students, advisors, and local partners; and discover what our authors are currently writing, reading, and doing.
Together, we are Moving Stories.
Narrative 4 is a project of the Tides Center.
And if you damned hounds haven't had your fill of my fiction yet, I've got a story there as well.
