Unexpectedly Expected - Chapter 5 - Take My Place

School is back in session and the teachers are getting the lay of the land! Sorry for Jughead's info dump. But, we find out why the baseball prodigy didn't continue in college! Also, if it wasn't clear, everyone hates Chad. Ronnie, girl, why are you still with him?! I hope I don't leave you hanging on the ending of this chapter for too long. hehehe...

The laughter was a welcome sound in the teacher’s lounge. Veronica’s giggle being music to Jughead’s ears. The group, however, caught him walking in before he could make a quick exit after seeing the unexpected guest. “Chad,” he said curtly. “Didn’t realize you were in town.” Chad put on a smarmy, oily smile. He’d talked up so many of the residents of this little town at the wedding. He wanted everyone to know exactly who he was and feel their adoration. “Jarhead!” He exclaimed and held out his hand.  “It’s Forsythe,” Jughead corrected, slipping his hands into his pockets.  Veronica’s boyfriend shook off the rebuff. His smile dimmed but he didn’t put it away. “I thought your friends didn’t call you that?” Now, Jughead smiled. HIs blue eyes turned dark and stormy. He’d been well-trained by his ex-girlfriend in the art of high society niceties. “They don’t.” Betty shared a look between Kevin and Archie that screamed Awkward! “Well, we’ve survived the first week of school, so how about we celebrate? Take some blankets with some drinks and snacks and hang out at The Flats?” The Flats was an area of the riverbank that offered some seclusion but a wide enough space for camping and picnics away from the highway. Their swimming hole was also in this area. When the public pool became too crowded or high schoolers just wanted to escape a watchful eye they made their way to the grassy knoll in between Fox Forest and Sweetwater River. “Oh, Chad!” Betty’s voice made it sound like she’d forgotten he was there. “If you’re still in town you’re welcome to come.”

Narwals - Monodon monoceros (one-tooth one-horn in Greek)

Narwals are relatives of Beluga whales, the only two species in the family Monodontidae. 75% of narwals live in the Canadian Arctic. A group of Narwhals is called a ‘Blessing’. Narwhals normally travel in pods of 15 to 20 but there have been reports of hundreds of narwhals spotted together. A group of Narwhals is called a ‘Blessing’. Adult narwals weigh 2,100 to 3,500 pounds and are 13-20 feet in length. The average lifespan of a narwal is about 50 years. The narwal ‘horn’ is a tusk formed by one of their two canine teeth (the narwals’ only dentition) and are primarily found in the male, though females sometimes have tusks — but they are smaller than the males not as prominent as a male's tusk. Many times, the female tusks fall off. Some narwals have two tusks while others have none. The upper-left canine tooth grows straight through their upper lip creating a left-hand helix spiral tusk that can grow to be up to ten feet long. The tusk is a sensory organ with 10 million nerve endings, it is essentially an inside-out tooth with the nerves on the outside. This structure makes the tusk extremely sensitive to temperature and chemical differences in the environment. and is thought to help the narwhal pick up changes in its environment. In addition, some recent film shows narwals tracking and then striking its prey (large cod) with the tusk to stun it before it swallows the fish whole.

There are no narwhals in captivity as captives die within months. In the wild the leading cause of death for norwals is the water ices over and they could become trapped and suffocate . They are also prey for orcas, and occasionally, polar bears. Inuit people will also hunt them.

Narwhal tusks are sold legally in some parts of the world, including Canada, and can fetch prices as high as $30,000. But in the United States, their trade is mostly prohibited by the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

HOT TUB SCENE!!!! (That's it. That's your whole summary lol)

Me: So. Who had the dream? I'm not mad. I just wanna know. Archie: I did. I had the dream- Me: No. No you didn't. Veronica? Veronica: Don't look at me. Look at Betty. Betty: What? I didn't dream it. Veronica: Huh. That's weird. How did you even know it was a dream? Betty: Because it's sitting right in front of us, and it says it's a dream. Veronica: Suspicious. Betty: No, it's not. Kevin: If it matters... probably not. But Cheryl was the last one to read it. Cheryl: Liar! I don't even ship them. Kevin: Oh really? Then what were you doing reading it earlier? Cheryl: I read it so I can gauge how much better of a better ship Toni and I are. Everyone knows that Kevin! Archie: Okay, okay, let's not fight. I dreamt it let me just own it. Me: NO! Who dreamt it?! Betty: Readers... Jughead's been awfully quiet. Jughead: REALLY?! Me: I dreamt it. I had an idea and I wrote it out. I predict that my brain will never tell me who dreamt it and it'll go down as the most discussed thing in the story.

Not Another Riverdale Love Story - Wicked Little Town

Here it is! THE BARCHIE CHAPTER! I know some have been waiting for this chapter. I hope it lives up to your expectations. It also might have some easter eggs for if I write their version of the story. I don't know why but the working title is "A Riverdale Love Story". We'll see. I have to finish this one first lol.

This chapter was a little difficult to write. I am really proud of what I was able to accomplish though. And the ending of the chapter has my favorite line that I have ever written.

The Peach Mobile sat outside Pop’s serving bushels of peaches for one week every July. Lines lasted for hours just to get a few pounds. Over the years they served different dishes if you didn’t want a dozen to take home. Comparatively, Veronica had convinced Betty to buy an expensive orange lip gloss that smelled and tasted of the fruit. He thought it was going to be bright neon. But it only gave her mauve lips a subtle tint and he wasn’t close enough to know if Veronica was correct. All he could do was watch as Betty licked her lips and smiled at how close it tasted to the real thing. He sat in between the two girls as Veronica sipped her peach milkshake and he and Betty indulged in the whole fruit. His heart fluttered when he heard her giggle at the juice dripping down her chin. It was crass but he wanted to know if her lip gloss tasted like the sugary stream she was trying to wipe away. It would only take a second. One press of his lips against hers. But a quick movement shook him from his indulgent thoughts.

If you liked the Barchie chapter then you're going to LOVE this one. This focuses on our main couple, Jughead and Veronica, and the aftermath of the Bughead breakup. Also... remember how this was supposed to be a story about Jughead and Veronica working together to get Jughead and Betty together? Yeah... me neither lol! The way this story took on a mind of its own is not something I'm mad at. I've loved writing every word of it. Right, now, I've just finished writing chapter 19 and it looks like it's going to be a total of 21 chapters.

I also did something a little cliche. There's a link (be sure to right click) that leads to a song that is playing out of the boombox (it's Riverdale of course there are boomboxes). Click it if you want! If you just want to know the song, here it is. Tell me Jughead doesn't have this song in his rotation. I dare you lol.

He must not have done a great job hiding his smile because she said “does my pain amuse you, Jughead? Your bike basically attacked me!”

He stole a quick glance up to her as he knelt in front of her, chivalrously taking her injured foot in his lap and pulling off the pump. Why did she insist on wearing heels in the middle of winter? Didn’t she have a cute pair of Luggs for this kind of weather? He didn’t mean for the snicker to come out, but there it was anyway. “You kicked it, Veronica.” The smile only grew as she tried to wrench her foot away from him and he held fast. “Stop. I need to make sure that it didn’t actually break the skin.”

Veronica slumped back into the chair, crossing her arms again feeling too small and too helpless for her comfort.

“You’re cute like that.” He motioned with his head to her sulking. “When you get all petulant. It’s like the world’s reminding you you’re not invincible.” He moved his fingers softly over the scratch. There was a red welt on the top of her foot but no blood and her stockings must have been indestructible because there wasn’t even a run at the wound site. The pads of his thumbs started lightly, making small circles near the injury site, keeping the blood going so it wouldn’t bruise. Purple may be her ‘signature color’ but he knew that didn’t mean as a garish pool of blood under the skin. 

Veronica nodded, not meeting his eyes. Damn him for knowing her so well. She was an ice queen. She was impenetrable. Especially by the likes of Jughead Jones.
