So, this isn’t a US-only thing. At all.
Renting pretty much anywhere has a significant chance of pet restrictions. My current houseshare doesn’t allow pets at all. Or smoking indoors.
Not that it’s kept my jerk flatmate from smoking under my window.
Or the local cats from crapping in the flowerbed.
People like OP are acting like entitled children. It’s one thing to say the landlord is charging people too much. It’s another to say there should be no extra charge at all.
And it’s especially stupid to take one area where you have complaints and extrapolate to an entire country.
* Because I’m in the UK.
