The US Secretary of Defense’s daughter, Pepper Potts, has to keep her identity secret when she goes abroad for college. The longer she spends away, the harder it becomes to keep secrets, especially when she takes it upon herself to learn all she can about another student in her program, named Natasha Romanova. (A fake dating fic, modeled after the plot of Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale)
MCU, Pepper/Natasha. Written for @thestarsshineon for the prompt ‘moving in together.’ Just something short and sweet.
It started small. A toothbrush here, a pair of socks there. They traveled around too much for it to be any other way. Pepper gave her a key and told her to use the place anytime she was in New York. And then Pepper went off to L.A., or Hong Kong, and Natasha went to Albania, or Morocco, and sometimes they met in the middle and it was okay.
But the pile of Natasha’s stuff in Pepper’s apartment continued to grow. Pepper found she didn’t really mind. Neither of them said anything in words, but Pepper thought that – just maybe – Natasha was starting to see the place as home.
“I’m going away for a while.”
The helicarrier was crashing into the water again and again on the TV, news anchors boldly declaring the end of SHIELD. Pepper ignored all of it, staring at the only SHIELD agent that mattered to her in that moment. She had a glass of wine in her hand, untouched since Natasha showed up at her doorstep.
“I don’t know how long,” Natasha continued, also ignoring the TV. Pepper had the sense to reach for the remote and shut it off. “I’ve got some senate hearings, but then I’m leaving.”
Pepper nodded, glancing around the room. “What about your stuff?” She can already feel the walls building, ready to fend off the potential hurt.
“You can hold onto it, can’t you?” Natasha smiled softly, moving closer, and set her hands on Pepper’s hips. Pepper relaxed, then wrapped her free arm around Natasha’s waist. Maybe it wasn’t the end after all.
“You still have your key?”
“I don’t need a key to get in here,” Natasha said, that hint of a smile still on her lips.
Pepper closed the rest of the distance between them, leaning down to give her a kiss. “You’re lucky I don’t have any neighbors to call the cops on you,” she replied, looking unimpressed even as Natasha leaned up on her tiptoes to press another soft kiss to her mouth.
“They’d never catch me,” she murmured against Pepper’s lips before kissing her again.
They stayed like that a moment longer, Pepper resting her cheek in Natasha’s hair, until she straightened up and said, “Come home safe, okay?”
Natasha glanced away. “I’ll be fine. Just need some time to…evaluate things.”
Pepper didn’t miss the glance, but she didn’t comment on it. “I’m sure you will be. Doesn’t mean I don’t worry.”
The next couple months were almost normal. Pepper ran Stark Industries, made sure Tony didn’t do anything more stupid than usual, kept an eye out for news about SHIELD or Natasha. She got a single call from Natasha once, over what was undoubtedly an untraceable line. Pepper was just glad to know Natasha was alive. She’d always known, going into this relationship, that it wasn’t going to be easy. But it never stopped her from trying.
It was late one evening, when Pepper was relaxing on the couch with a book and another glass of wine, that she heard footsteps in the hall. She recognized them instantly, setting down the book and wine on the end table. Natasha entered the room with a small bag slung over her shoulder, looking tired but otherwise unhurt.
Pepper held out her hand, and Natasha dropped the bag on the floor and curled up on Pepper’s lap without saying a word.
She wrapped her arms around Natasha, holding her close, and they sat like that in comfortable silence, just soaking in each other’s presence until Pepper finally said,
“Are you going to stay?”
Natasha rested her head against Pepper’s shoulder, face pressed to Pepper’s neck. She inhaled deeply, Pepper’s hair tickling her nose, and nodded as she exhaled.
Pepper’ll ask her about her trip later, what she was looking for, what she found. For now she kissed the top of Natasha’s head and said, “Welcome home.”
Natasha didn’t say anything, but Pepper felt her smile against her neck.
MCU, Pepper/Natasha. NC-17. People on my dash were talking about how tiny Natasha is in comparison to Pepper. This is pretty much their fault.
Pepper looks down on Natalie Rushman from legal, not in any sort of metaphorically disapproving way, but because even wearing heels Natalie Rushman from legal barely reaches Pepper's nose. She watches as Tony flirts with Ms. Rushman and then comes to sit beside Pepper, mumbling absently as he flips through her records. Pepper keeps one ear on Tony and one eye on the pair in the ring, and when Natalie Rushman flips Happy over with one smooth movement she can't stop herself from smirking even as she shouts and gets up to see if Happy's okay.
All in all, Pepper muses several days later as Natalie hands her a schedule of meetings for the day without even being asked, Tony could've picked a worse assistant for her, even if he did do it behind her back.
