Wendy Red Star is an Apsáalooke artist born in Billings, Montana, and based in Portland, Oregon. Red Star mines archival materials from photographs, maps, legal documents, recordings, artworks, to sacred objects that speak to the multivalence of Apsáalooke experience. Using a wide range of mediums and strategies from photography to installation, Red Star challenges existing histories of Native Americans, particularly related to her Crow heritage and from a distinctly feminist Indigenous perspective. North Country at Work: In the studio with painter Kit Thomas. Thank you Ana Williams-Bergen 🐺 ✨ 🌙 Artist Kit Thomas grew up in Akwesasne but lived throughout the US as an adult. They came back to Akwesasne last year and say that now, everything is falling into place. At 41, they’re finally doing art full-time. Thomas says that they have "always put my work on the back burner, and I've never been allowed to truly give all my passion to art. But now it's my time." * * Thomas has been making art since they were a kid, but they started doing it more seriously in their mid-twenties to help cope with their mental health struggles. They say that "there was something I couldn't get out vocally. And I forgot about the one thing that I would turn to as a kid and I just started sketching again, I started painting." * * “Thomas identifies as two-spirit, a modern umbrella term for Indigenous people who have both masculine and feminine spirits. For thirty years, Duane Slick has been creating work that integrates his Native American heritage. In his ongoing painting series that references the coyote, Slick plays with the beauty and the tragedy of his heritage, weaving the mythology and folklore of Indigenous culture with Modernist abstraction style. Like the wolf, the buffalo, and the grizzly bear, the coyote was hunted down and killed by European settlers because of fear for the safety of their livestock. The violence towards these animals parallels the genocide waged against Native Americans in the United States.

“The coyote doesn’t just embody Native America—it is Native America, with the animal’s roots on the continent going back into the early Pleistocene Epoch, two and half million years ago. Slick has taken on the mantle of the coyote to convey both the beauty and the tragedy of his heritage: in the artist’s work there is room for the coyote’s laughter and its tears.” – (Page 6, Richard Klein, Exhibition Director.)

In his work, Onondaga artist Frank Buffalo Hyde explores difficult subjects such as genocide, colonization, rape, and land theft, while also questioning the label and perceptions around being an “Indian artist.”

“Concerned that this label implies that he, as a Native person, is not part of American culture, he asserts a proactive role for defining Native identity in the contemporary world. Native cultures have had a profound effect on American culture — American cars, clothes, rood, and television are part of the everyday Native experience; therefore Indian identity, according to Hyde, should reflect this continued connection to popular culture.” – Jessica R.
