shoutout out to the indigenous folks who don't cut their hair for spiritual & cultural reasons;
even if it's overstimulating, even if the troubles of life seem to weigh down your hair, even if you want different hairstyles, even if you're struggling to unlearn Western beauty ideals, even when it's hard, even when everyone else around you is cutting their hair, even when other indigenous people don't understand why or chastise you for practicing, even when your family doesn't follow the practice, even when your hair was forced to get cut, even when it's hot out, even when it's hard to afford maintaining

Indigikitchen:
"Welcome to Indigikitchen!
Indigikitchen, a portmanteau of Indigenous, digital, and kitchen, is an online cooking show dedicated to re-indigenizing our diets using digital media. Using foods native to their Americas, Indigikitchen gives viewers the important tools they need to find and prepare food in their own communities. Beyond that, it strengthens the ties to our cultures and reminds us of the inherent worth of our identities while fueling our physical bodies. Indigenous food systems support healthier ecosystems, bodies, and families.
Food as Resistance
It’s no secret that healthy eating generally involves avoiding processed foods and preservatives. Indigenous foods like wild game, berries, corn, squash, and wild rice are far easier for the digestive system to process than wheat flour, dairy, and sugar. In the case of Natives, there is the added benefit of cultural revitalization; pre-contact foods, especially those harvested locally, are a testament to the resilience of Native lifestyles and a delicious way of resisting colonization."
I would also like to add for writers who want to write indigenous characters- being accurate is important, and when it comes to closed practice things 1) just don't do it unless you are from that tribe and have explicit permission, and 2) you can also make the characters accurate to the best of your knowledge and put a disclaimer on each chapter/ep/ect that you are not a member of the tribe, that your content may not be 100% accurate as you want to respect tribe's privacy and attempts at cultural preservation, and that your content does not represent the tribe or it's members and is not approved by them.
Like directors used to do this all the time I feel like where they explicitly said that the movie was a work of fiction based on real people or events and that they have done their best to be accurate. Then some of them even add websites or whatever sources to direct people to. We need to bring that back!!! And stop filling indigenous tags with your questions and fandom shit!!! Those are places for indigenous folks to connect not for you to colonize and center yourself!!!
Tayana Tagaq
Tayana Tagaq is an Inuit singer, writer, and composer whom I have enjoyed listening to for years and discovered her through indigigoth spaces. She uses Inuit throat singing kattajaq as she says it gives her power and connects her to the land. She combines katajjaq singing with genres such as jazz, classical music, heavy metal, punk rock, and electronic. The themes of her work are around her experiences growing up in Nunavut, Canada and the subjugation of Indigenous peoples of Canada there. She talks about language loss, cultural theft, residential schools, and relationship to the land. Her songs are political, calling the pain, violence, and darkness inflicted on Indigenous communities, Indigenous land, and Indigenous culture- but she finds beauty in the hardship, power, resilience, all of which are themes in other gothic music genres. I highly recommend this artist.
