There's something so poignant about fatherhood during the Trojan War. Odysseus frames Palamedes for treason and gets him killed to avenge the near-death of his son. In turn, Nauplius throws Penelope into the sea in an attempt to drown her to avenge the death of his son at Odysseus' hands.

WAITTT how is ovid the first time i hear about nauplius taking revenge on odysseus and diomedes for killing palamedes? you're telling me the story doesn't end with palamedes' stoning, his father goes full revenge mode and kills whole sections of the greek fleet through trickery (prompting ovid's diomedes to call it the worst thing that happened during the nostoi)??

looking at other sources there are also variants where nauplius is the one who facilitates diomedes' wife to cheat on him, AND induces odysseus' mother to kill herself. i have been DENIED this generations-spanning tale of spite and subterfuge oh my gosh

Nauplius is so based because bro saw Greeks taking captured women as their second wives and decided to convince the wives in Greece to take second husbands its a very specific way to avenge his son

I think there's a thing where odysseus killed palamedes so palamedes dad went around sabotaging the other kings relationships or smth?

but I dont recall if he tried to take revenge on penelope? who's the actual wife of the guy who killed his son?

Yes there is the tradition that Nauplius, the father of Palamedes tried to avenge his son against most kings. But the weapons he used according to later sources were much more indirect.

He tried to ruin the households of the kings from the very root by encouraging the wives be unfaithful to their husbands. Later traditions seem to attribute to Nauplius the yielding of Clytemnetsra to Aegisthus or Aegialia take lovers to her bed. The ultimate revenge that seems to be attributed to Nauplius against Odysseus seems to be that since obviously Penelope didn't take the bait to shame her husband by cheating that he encouraged the Cephallinian leaders push their sons as suitors to the house of Penelope

So you may say in this train of thought Nauplius caused the eating away of Odysseus's wealth and almost the uprooting of his own household and almost the murder of his son by encouraging more than 100 young men court his wife and declare Odysseus dead for his own kingdom.

been spending the past few hours frankensteining sources to make an interpretation of palamedes i perceive to be the funniest which includes taking a line from apollodorus' epitome where nauplius (father of palamedes) and nauplius (son of poseidon) are the same guy because yeah. it would be funny if odysseus just had constant feuds with the god's bloodline. intentional or not

It’s interesting that this more or less confirms that Nauplius was gifted with longevity much like Nestor, probably by Poseidon himself.
