Part 2 of the She Ra ask- Double Trouble honestly feels like they were written with TERF ideology in mind. A tall creepy person with masculine voice and body pretending to be a cute girl to wreak havoc? Oh my god. Not to mention their design reeks of antisemitism, greedy lizard person who laughs at pain... Did the creators HAVE to change the design, in the OG show they were a human and a hero, why tf was that changed in favour of this mess??

Sorry for replying to this so late. I can totally see where you’re coming from here about Double Trouble. Part 1 of this ask was about Catradora being toxic and honestly I feel like we’ve had this conversation enough and clarified our views on it so I’m going to focus on this part of the ask.

There definitely are both positives and negatives to the character of Double Trouble. They’re an explicitly non binary character on a children’s show played by a non binary actor, yet they’re not human, and even though no one on the show is really human, they’re...significantly less human looking. Any other character from the original series could have been chosen to be their nb character who wasn’t Double Trouble.

I can definitely see that interpretation of their Flutterina disguise as well. I think it’s important that we clarify again Double Trouble is non binary, not a man, and disguises themself as other characters, but I can see how younger viewers who don’t really understand what non binary is might interpret them as a man disguising themself as a woman. I don’t think Noelle and the writers are transphobic, at least not intentionally. They cast a transgender actor for the role of Jewelstar and confirmed that he’s a trans man and they’ve been incredibly supportive of headcanons of Bow and Perfuma being trans while also admitting they don’t want to take credit for putting in that representation since they didn’t. But that doesn’t mean they’re immune to transphobic tropes unintentionally being perpetuated in their work.

As a Jewish person, I have a complicated relationship with the lizard people thing. When I was younger I wasn’t aware of its antisemitic roots and used to make those jokes myself until I found out and was horrified. But I’ve met so many goyish people in real life who make those jokes who also have no idea of their origins until I explain it to them. So I kind of have a visceral gut reaction to anything about lizard people and it’s not great that this is tied to a non binary character.. I’m reluctant to call it intentional because I can’t really think of anything else about them that ties them to Jewish stereotypes so it’s not quite as explicit an example as say the goblins in the HP series, but I definitely think there are underlying stereotypes there that we should be aware of and critique.

In general, I am very aware of more attempts being made to ‘cancel’ the work of marginalized creators who make conscious attempts to include representation, especially with this being a children’s show, while non-marginalized creators who don’t really include representation are often left untouched. This point can extend to part 1 of the ask, about how Catra and Adora’s relationship is held to much higher standards than M/F presumed straight couples are on shows by cishet writers. Does this mean we shouldn’t ever criticize marginalized creators? No, we should be able to critique any piece of media and let the writers know where they could have done better. Double Trouble has many problematic elements to them and the history being the lizard people trope needs to be understood and honestly just tossed in the trash. But we also need to think about why we’re so determined to criticize this children’s show that is a big step forward in lots of ways

Do you ever notice how most non-binary characters are robots/aliens/demons/non-human? basically characters that wouldn’t normally have a concept of gender so the creator decides to make them non-binary?

isn’t that kinda weird? why can’’t there be more human non-binary characters, or at least characters that have a concept of gender but are still non-binary. idk it kinda feels like most creators don’t want to deal with non-human characters relationship with gender. but the implication that being non-binary is “inhuman” seems kinda gross. like i’m not saying that your a bad person if you like these characters, or that these characters are inherently bad rep, but most of this time it feels like the creator is like “Well this character isn’t human so they’re non binary!” which idk leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
