Scent

The elevator was too small, confining. It made Ellie feel like she was locked in a steel box. She breathed deeply through her nose, foot shaking and Ellie stared at the floor number as the elevator continued moving up. Her fingers dug into the strap of her backpack and she reached over to yank the stop button.

Banging her hands against the wall, Ellie kicked out and punched at the metal until her fingers hurt. She was so furious, so hurt. Ellie could barely keep the angry tears at bay as she slid down the wall until she was seated on the floor.

Nick had pushed her out of the way of the car, he took the hit for her and she couldn’t help the gnawing feeling of guilt crawling around her chest like a wild animal. A well deserved feeling, she knew. If she hadn’t asked him to jog with her every morning, they wouldn’t have been on that road and Nick wouldn’t be in the hospital fighting for his life.

Dropping her bag next to her. Bending over it, Ellie opened up her bag. Pulling the dark sweater out of her backpack, Ellie brought it to her face. It smelled like him. Like his aftershave and the chocolate protein shakes he liked to drink.

Nick had left it at her apartment at some point this month and it had just stayed comfortingly on her dresser since. Ellie kept telling herself she would return it to him but every morning before work when she went to grab it, her hand would hover over the sweater for a minute and then she would leave it right where it was.

Shrugging off her jacket, Ellie pulled the sweater over her tee shirt. If she couldn’t sit by his bedside until he woke up, at least she could have a piece of him with her. And when he woke up, because she knew he would, Ellie would be right there.

Throughout most of “On Fire” I noticed Ellie’s sweater. At first glance I thought “it’s just a baggy black sweater, so what?” Then I realized, Ellie is upbeat, happy, she’s colourful. She’s usually in bright colours. But this episode she was wearing all dark clothes to show how joy/happiness is leeched out of her without Nick, but also the fact that it’s his sweater speaks volumes. It brings her comfort. She stares at his desk, his picture, and hugs herself, digging her fingers into the fabric of his sweater and trying to pretend it’s actually him there.

cbs captions say its the first option, but they've been known to be wrong, and i hear the second...plus it makes more sense to me.  anyway what do y'all think?
