I will teach my children it is okay to be unapologetically native, to love themselves and not be ashamed. I will sit them down and talk to them about the strength of our people like my father told me. I’ll let them know there brown skin is beautiful, that they are the soil that future seedlings will grow. I’ll kiss their foreheads, braid their hair, sing them prayers of strength. they won’t have to be ashamed like I was and that’s a promise.
