Do you know of any good books or resources on interacting with individuals with BPD? I'm primarily curious because of my job (healthcare... there's such a stigma, especially since BPD patients are notoriously challenging, I'd like to know how to
act in a way helpful, constructive, and supportive). I’m also just curious in general, even though I’m not close to anyone with borderline. :) Also, good luck with treatment! You sincerely deserve happiness. <3
Thanks for being so curious and nonjudgmental! We really need more people like you in healthcare.
McLean has some good resources: http://www.mcleanhospital.org/clinical-services/patient-and-family-resources?tab=borderline-personality-disorder-patient-and-family-education-initiative as does NEABPD: http://www.borderlinepersonalitydisorder.com/.
As for books, I Hate You – Don’t Leave Me is one of the top books on BPD, and I’ve heard Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder is good. Also, there are books written by some of my old treatment team: Borderline Personality Disorder in Adolescents (not sure of the population you’re working with) by Blaise Aguirre, Understanding and Treating Borderline Personality Disorder: A Guide for Professionals and Families is by John Gunderson who started the Gunderson Residence, Mindfulness for Borderline Personality Disorder: Relieve Your Suffering Using the Core Skill of Dialectical Behavior Therapy is by Gillian Galen and Blaise Aguirre and is directed towards the Borderline patient, but could be helpful for healthcare professionals as to what is helpful to the patients! It might be interesting to read some memoirs of individuals with BPD, such as The Buddha and The Borderline, and Get Me Out of Here.
I hope this was helpful! Let me know if you need anything else. And thanks for your well wishes :)
All those involved in mental health .... "consumers" to clinicians to loved ones and friends.... I think there's still time to sign up for free for this call-in tomorrow with former congressman Patrick J. Kennedy. Celebrating the 50 year anniversary of John F. Kennedy's initiative on Mental Health with plans to do more to break down stigma and provide services more readily. I've been invited to participate and am very excited!
