I started this blog nearly two years ago and didn’t really know what the hell I was doing with music yet. I knew I wanted to include weekly songs in some way but went through an awkward bout of attaching little paragraphs to the tunes I posted because I wasn’t posting anything mainstream and wanted the audience to understand what they were hearing. As a start-up blog, I wasn’t very popular (still ain’t) and therefore a few bands I wanted to highlight initially just went kind of ignored. So, while I have posted work by Colourmusic once before, I figured a second glance wouldn’t hurt now that I have a slightly larger audience. To briefly summarize, this is a band that makes full albums dedicated to individual colors of the light spectrum, meaning each album they produce is supposed to actually sound like a separate color/emotion (orange, purple, etc). Those with conditions like synesthesia (hearing music and seeing colors in your mind) may be able to interpret their sounds with more introspection than I, and I have been waiting for that kind of person to TELL ME if songs like this actually sound pink, as this track is off their ‘pink album’. The relationship between color and sound is an infinitely fascinating topic, even opined on by the likes of Sir Isaac Newton, and this group has a history of giving the subject matter the old community college try in terms of realizing their content based on nothing more than a hue. They take pride in delivering on their moniker with style, persistence, and a highly energetic approach. I wish I could describe their music; I suppose you could call it high-concept indie rock, but their work really defies a single genre. One aspect that really hooked me about their tunes is the amorphous, almost genderless vocals that always contain meaning underneath the oddball delivery. If you listen very closely behind the psych-folk stylings, there is genuine meaning behind the lyrics of every single tune they create. This is You For Leaving Me from 2011’s My _____ Is Pink.
