The moon cast its silver light over the Hyuga clan training grounds, shadows from the trees playing around in the cool night breeze. In actual fact, I had been looking forward to seeing Neji since his return from some mission, but by the time I reached him, something told me that all was not right.
He stood alone in the clearing, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his head bent as though lost deep in thought. He seemed to bleed sharp definition, cornered off from everything that was around him. The sharp definition that seemed to etch out of his very being had dulled, replaced with heavy, subdued weariness. Where normally intense focus shone out of his eyes, now it was but a shadow.
"Neji?" I whispered, tinged with just a hint of concern. There was no answer; it hung there, in the heavy silence between us and could have been cut with a knife. Of course, Neji wasn't going to let me get away with just worrying for nothing. "Is everything okay?" I said, finally taking a step closer, my hand going out tentatively to lay on him.
He winced at the sound of my voice, almost as though it caused him physical pain. A moment it was before he looked up at me, and something in the bogged emotion that plastered his face into a stiff mask I couldn't place. Regret? Guilt? His words came out slow, as if he had to force them into existence.
"There is something I need to say," he finally began in a tightened voice; that is, he could barely breathe out the words. It was very clear that what he needed to say was going to be hard—for him and probably even more so for me.
And then I felt like a ton of bricks were falling into my stomach as I stepped forth, trying to look him in the eyes, but Neji just kept looking down on the ground.
"What's wrong?" I said again, my voice now shaking and slurred with this rising sense of dread. My skin grew cold—a cold washing over the night air and through me—some sort of pressure weighing down on me, squeezing at my heart.
Neji finally broke the silence, and his next words seemed to weight heavy enough that my very breathing hitched as he said, "we can never see each other again." My world seemed to tilt; the earth seemed to shift under my feet. I never thought he would say those words to me.
"Why? What happened?" I asked, my voice shaking in desperation. The Hyuga clan have their rules, but we were so cautious. We had our meetings tucked away, out of the way, always away from prying eyes of the clan; it had to be enough. I thought we were safe.
My eyes barely saw Neji slump his shoulders, but it was a battle in that gaze once he lifted them. A battle full of conflict and sorrow. "It's the clan," he said not politely, sorrow thick now and voice low. "They don't allow relationships with outsiders. If they find out, they'll punish us both. I can't let that happen to you."
My eyes welled up in an instant, the vision blurring. "Neji, we'll find a way," I said, reaching out my hand towards him as he walked back, putting in the sudden distance that seemed insurmountable. "And we'll be careful. We can—"
"No." He cut me off with the shake of his head. His voice was tight with urgency in his actions. "It's not that simple. The Main Branch watches over everyone. If they find out, they won't just punish me. They'll come after you. But I can't risk that."
Each of his words was like a hammer inside me, the kind that was driven into my heart. I knew he was right. But it was a truth I did not want to accept. And I took another step forward, reaching out to place my hand against his cheek. I needed that connection. Any connection in this moment between us. His body tensed, the muscles tightening under my touch, but he didn't pull away. "Neji, please," I continued, tears streaming openly now. "''We don't have to give up. There's always another way.''
He closed his eyes a moment and leaned into my embrace, like a man hoping to find reprieve, if only for a moment, from a burden too heavy to bear. But it was a short-lived reprieve, and he pulled away, leaving a vacuum where my hand was. It was there in his eyes, not hidden, the pain reaching out to bang relentlessly on my heart. "My fate is sealed," he'd say, full of regret, his voice heavy. "But I can't change it, no matter how much I might want to."
It felt like this crumbling world; somehow, the ground split beneath my feet, leaving a deep abyss dividing us. I wish to God I could bring him back, somehow bridge that unyielding rift, which even the Hyuga clans' laws set before us. Challenging them would be to risk everything we both cared about—yes, maybe even our lives.
"Neji, please don't go," I implored, my voice raw and splitting. The tears streamed down my cheeks, and my heart ached in desperation. I wanted to fight for him, for us, but what was the use? The iron grip of the Hyuga household control was too hard, and any defiance might rip consequences on the heads of us both.
He gazed back at me, charged with the same sadness and lament that expressed in my eyes. "I wish it didn't have to be like this," he had that soft voice, where every spoken word became an essence of goodbye. "I will always care about you, but I cannot stay; it's too dangerous." And then he turned and walked away. The steps echoed through the silent night, cutting into my heart with every echo.
I wanted to argue with him, to tell him that we could fight this together, but his eyes told me it was useless. He wasn't just deciding; he was resigning himself to a life decided by others, his happiness cast aside to keep me safe.
I wanted to argue with him, to tell him we could fight this together, but the look in his eyes told me that would be pointless. He wasn't just making a choice; he was submitting himself to a life told by others, his happiness sacrificed on the altar of my safety.
"Neji," I whispered, fighting in my voice with the rust of leaves, "I just can't see my life without you." Every syllable seemed to be a plea, one for keeping from letting go what could not let through.
He stopped, a dark figure against the blue-gray glow of the moonset, and turned around over his shoulder to look back at me. There, in the silver brightness, I was able to see something shining forth from the pale eye—a glint of unshed tears. The scowl faded from his face, replaced by something more tender and reflective of the ache in my treated heart.
"Nor I," he admitted, the sound of his voice barely more than a thread in the darkness. All raw, vulnerable exposure, his admission bared depths of his own pain. "But you and I have to. It's the only way for me to keep you safe."
The moon cast a cold silvery hue over the empty training grounds, which would eventually play a role in the sensation of loneliness stealing over me.
So much I wanted to run after him, take him by the hand, and beg him not to leave, but nothing would alter.
It would only be worse for both of us.

MINORS DO NOT INTERACT
——————————————————————
You grew up alone in the hidden leaf village being left on the door steps of the third hokage. The only reason he knew you were apart of the hidden L/n clan was based off of a tattoo you had on your ankle.
He and a select few knew what had happened to your clan the horrible massacre that took upon your family leaving you an orphan. The third hokage gladly took you in a raised you as his own daughter but was clear to make sure to not hide who you were and what your past consisted of.
You now at the age of 18 could master all five nature transformations. You went through intense training after the chunin exams and went through hidden training but sometimes the third would have you train with an actual team. And the team he chose was Gai sensei.
That’s when you first met Neji Hyuga, you were both the same age and had the same set of skills. At that time you could only master two of the nature transformations, water release and wind release.
“Third Hokage what a surprise.” Gai said walking into the room, you kept your head down on your paper writing down things to study. “This is Y/n. I would like for you to train her with your team for now.” Gai gladly accepted and brought you to the training grounds where everyone else was waiting.
Lee, Ten and Neji all looked at you with different expressions which made you feel uncomfortable. “Y/n, why don’t you show us what you can do so I can better evaluate you.” Gai spoke moving out the way letting you have the space to show off your technique.
Using you water and wind release together creating ice, Gai and Lee praised your skill while Ten sat their admiring it in silence and Neji scoffed turning away in dissatisfaction.
From that day forward a hatred for the stuck up Neji Hyuga started to form. What made it worse was that it wasn’t hatred at all, you had actually liked him a lot not just for his skill and preservation but for his personality and the person that he holds himself to be. You respected him, but you would never fool yourself to have those type of feelings so the best way to ignore them is by ignoring him.
Currently at the rank Jonin you were sent on many missions along with Neji who became the same rank around the same time you did. This last mission you attended took over a few months to complete and by the time you came back it was evident how much you physically changed.
“Y/N!!!” Sakura and Ten ran over to you greeting you at the entrance of the gate, you gave the both of them a hug and smiled at how much you missed your friends. “Look at you, you are practically glowing.” Ten said grabbing your hand and spinning you around, “Now that you’re here, you can join us on this trip that we were all getting ready to leave for.” Sakura said wrapping her arm around yours while Ten held onto the bag you were carrying.
“I guess. I don’t have any upcoming missions so I guess.” Sakura squealed in excitement, “Neji just came back a few days ago too so that means everyone’s here.” “Wait what?” You said stopping in your tracks. “Yeah. It’s just a trip for us, a few days by a lake a ways out. It’s supposed to be really fun.” Ten said and you immediately shook your head in disagreement.
“I can’t go.” “Why because of Neji? I don’t know what you two have going on, you two have hated each other ever since you joined the team.” Ten said walking forward towards your house with Sakura pulling on your arm. “I hate stuck up people. Simple. Not everyone has lived the life that he has or anyone else.” You say looking down at your ankle at you clan tattoo.
“Well suck it up for a week. Can you do that? We all missed you. It never fails that you tend to take missions that last months.” Sakura complained as you three arrived at your house, you thanked the both of them and went inside to unpack what you didn’t need.
~
You were the last to arrive at the lake due to just coming back from an extended mission so everyone was expecting you to be late. When you arrived Lee, Naruto, Shikamaru and Choji attacked you with hugs and greetings, Neji stayed sitting down where he was sitting while you greeted everyone but him.
“How was the mission? I’m sure it was easy for you but why did it take so long and why was it extended?” Shikamaru asked, “Yeah? When we heard from the granny that your mission was extended we couldn’t understand why. We all assumed you got injured or something.” Naruto asked adding onto Shikamaru questions.
“I finished the mission a couple of months ago. I did get injured which kept me there for at most a week. After that I wanted to stay, the village itself was beautiful and I learned a lot about myself and my techniques there.” You said pushing a small piece of hair behind your ear. You unconsciously looked over at Neji who was staring at you, furrowing your eyebrows you looked away and started to bite on your fingernail.
Recently anytime you would think about Neji this heated feeling would erupt inside of you and now that he was here infront of you didn’t make it any better. You squeezed your thighs together throwing your attention back into the conversation. Everyone decided they wanted to take a dip in the lake so everyone had left to change into their swim clothes.
Gifted by someone from the village you just came from you wore an all black two piece that really showed off your curves that you gained during the mission. You followed out behind Sakura and your eye’s immediately landed on Neji who had just risen from under the water, his wet hair was slicked back revealing his kekkei genkai.
Your insides were doing that weird thing again and you ended up running back inside the building. Your heart was beating fast and your face was heating up and the slick between your thighs was making your life a living hell. You decided to stay in your room for the rest of the night just hoping to get your hormones and body under control.
Hours passed and once everyone had fallen asleep you made your way outside after putting some clothes on and sat down in a secluded area that had a great view of the sky and lake in one. You were busy admiring the lake when you felt a presence behind you, getting ready to protect yourself from and attack Neji showed himself ready for a counter attack.
You let out a small sigh of relief before standing up and getting ready to leave but Neji grabbed your arm forcefully pushing you back into the tree you were sitting near. “Ow. Hyuga. You’re hurting me.” You said trying to pull your arm away but he wouldn’t listen, in the back of your mind this aggressiveness was turning you on so bad but you weren’t going to show it.
“Tell me. What’s your problem with me?” He asked releasing his grip and crossing his arms over his chest. “Why ask after all these years. You didn’t seem to care then so why now?” You asked ignoring his question.
“At first I didn’t care but then it annoyed me that everytime your eyes laid on mine you would either roll them or get up and leave the room. You had no shame and showing everyone that you hated me.” He spoke pressing his fingers on the bridge of his nose in annoyance. He looked back at you seeing as you had your arms crossed and wasn’t looking at him.
“So all you feel for me is hatred?” He asked seeing if that would get you to answer him, “Yes. I don’t like arrogance fools like you, now if you’ll excuse me.” You were about to walk away but he stepped infront of you again blocking your path.
“Fine then.” He let out an exhausted sigh spewing some curses under his breath before looking back up at you. "Give me a chance. To prove what i can make you feel." Before you could answer his hand gripped the back of your neck pulling your face closer to his.
His lips forcefully pressed against yours pulling you into a heated make out session where he took full control. His tongue attacked yours taking over your whole mouth almost making your legs feel weak just from the things his tongue was accomplishing. His other hand made its way down to the bottom of your dress lifting it up to your abdomen giving him full access to your already dripping cunt.
His hand rubbed the wet patch formed around your core and pulled away from the kiss smirking down at you. “Already this wet for me? I haven’t even done anything.” He devoured your lips once again as his three fingers started rubbing your clit through your panties forcing a lewd moan out of your mouth and into his.
He smirked into the kiss pulling away and using his thumb to pull on your bottom lip, he seemed entranced by the expression you were making as his fingers pressed gently on your clit. A moan slipped out again and Neji could feel his member twitching in his pants. He only meant to mess with you a little bit to make you loosen up around him but he took the situation too far and he doesn’t believe he can back down now.
As his fingers rubbed along the inside of your fold gathering the slick wetness that formed, his member grew harder and harder each passing second he had you under him. Your ips started to grind against his hand pulling a shock reaction from him. He watched you pleasure yourself using his hand with no shame, your moans stayed at a low sound as you back arches against the tree.
Pulling your panties down to your ankles he bent down getting on his forcing one of your thighs onto his shoulder. “Neji…stop what are you doing?” You asked covering your reddened face, he ignored your question and used his tongue to lick a long stripe on your core. You flinched from the new sensation as his mouth dove in to lick and suck on your clit, to make it even worse his index finger rubbed light circles around your entrance teasing you to a horrible extent.
“Ahh…fuck Neji stop teasing me please.” You said begging him to apply more pressure to the area you wanted it most, without warning he stuck two fingers in immediately reaching your sensitive spongy spot almost making you cum right there. He continued to pump his fingers in and out of you curling them every now and then watching how his fingers would make your body react.
He pulled his mouth away from your now sensitive bud and stood up with his fingers still pumping in and out of you. His free hand grabbed your chin forcing you to look at him and just like you his lewd expression made you want to take him right there. His mouth attached to yours once again and this time his kiss was much more gentle as his mouth pressed kisses along your jawline down to your neck.
You but your lip trying to suppress your moans as the knot in the pit of your stomach was becoming agonizingly tight and the moment his fingers curled again it snapped without warning and you came all over his hand. He removed his himself from you and his free hand ran through his hair.
He was trying to figure out why he did what he did, you looked at him embarrassed for yourself seeing as you let your guard down and he took advantage of that moment. “I-I’m going to go.” He spoke with a hint of blush on his cheek, you looked dazed slipping your panties back on and making your way back to your room.
After that night you and Neji always got awkward around each other. Not in a weird way but for you it was you wanted to do more than just harmless kissing and touching.
First time writing for Neji! I hope you enjoy it Anon! :)

You were sat next to Neji during the Chunin Exam written test. You groaned as Ibiki said that if someone on your squad got a 0 you would be out. “Please Naruto, just answer one correctly.”
“Worried about your team?” Neji smirked.
“I’ll be fine, and Sakura will totally ace it, and Sasuke should be fine, but Naruto.” you sighed as you put your head down in your arms. You stared up at the Genin next to you. “Oh, you’re the Sasuke of your year aren’t you?”
“Sasuke of my year?”
“You know, the top of the class guy.”
“And Sasuke is supposed to match me?”
“Well, yeah I’ll admit I’m even excited to see if you two fight.” you smiled. Neji wasn’t used to someone he just met being so nice and talkative to him.
Hinata was one of your best friends so you grimaced at how brutal Neji was during their fight, however during your fight with one of the sand shinobi’s, Neji was silently rooting for you. Your interaction during the Chunin exams was the start of a love hate relationship between the two of you.
-- Present Day --
“Just! Let! Me! Hit! You!” you yelled missing each punch you threw at Neji.
“Well if you were faster you could.” Neji sighed as he appeared behind your back, gently gripping your arm behind you.
“Hmph, well maybe I should just ask Lee to train me.” you sighed plopping down on the ground and throwing a pile of leaves at him.
Neji felt annoyed that you would even joke about asking his teammate to train you after he’s been your sparring partner for over 5 years. You were the only person Neji would ever let tease him and Neji was the only person you asked to train you in taijutsu. “You wouldn’t” he sighed.
You could’ve sworn you saw a small blush appear on his cheeks, “Or maybe Naruto is back, or I think Kiba knows taijutsu.”
“Oh shut up.” Neji sighed as he helped you back up. The two of you walked over to where your jackets laid against a tree stump.
“Don’t worry Nej, you know you’re the only one for me,” you joked as you picked up your training gear.
The two of you made your way over to the BBQ restaurant to meet the rest of the gang, your hands accidentally touching multiple times on the way there but neither of you put your hands in your pockets to avoid it.
Akamaru immediately noticed you and jumped up on you. “Oh hey buddy! Haven’t see you in a while!” you laughed petting the ninja hound.
“Sorry about that y/n! You are one of Akamaru’s favorites.” Kiba teased as he made Akamaru get off you.
“Well I better be!” You laughed as your tussled Kiba’s hair.
Neji watched the interaction between the two of you, growing more irritated by the second. It wasn’t that the two of you were dating he just didn’t think that any of the guys in your year were good enough for you, especially Kiba.
You were the life of the party when it came to group hang outs, everyone wanted to talk to you which meant Neji barely got the chance to talk to you.
“Stop staring at just ask her out already!” TenTen whispered as she toyed with her chopsticks.
“That’s ridiculous.” Neji scoffed.
“What’s ridiculous is you acting like you haven’t liked her for years.”
Neji got up quietly from the table and left the restaurant. You immediately noticed and excused yourself saying you just needed fresh air. “Nej? You’re leaving already?”
“You didn’t have to follow me.”
“I know but, I wanted to.” you replied as your hand went out to comfort him. You could tell he was feeling off.
Neji pulled away, “just go back to flirting with Kiba.”
“I wasn-”
“Save it y/n.”
“You’re being really harsh Nej.” you replied, walking away from him with tears in your eyes.
You and Neji haven’t talked since your small fight in front of the restaurant. You knew the both of you weren’t on a mission right now which made it feel even worse. You sighed walking up to the Hokage’s tower, thankfully Kakashi was putting you on a mission which was definitely what you needed to get your mind off of Neji.
“Oh hey y/n! Kakashi called for you too?” Kiba asked, Akamaru trailing behind him.
“Kiba!” you laughed, “looks like you’re my mission partner.” you smiled walking next to Akamaru. The two of you opened the doors to the Hokage’s office. Your heart dropped when you saw Neji and Sakura in front of Kakashi’s desk.
“Y/N! Yay! I was hoping there would be another girl on the team!” She smiled as she jumped up to hug you.
“I feel like I never get to work with you anymore!” you smiled back.
Neji glared as Kiba was too close to you, which actually wasn’t even that close to you at all, just too close for Neji’s liking.
“Y/N, Kiba, I already informed Neji and Sakura, the two of them can fill you in on the way to the gate.”
The four of you walked down the stairs, you kept your distance from both Neji and Kiba, happily catching up with your old teammate. “Sooo, is Sasuke back from whatever Sasuke is doing lately?” you teased.
Sakura just blushed, “I have no clue when he’ll be back.” She looked up at you and nodded over to Neji, “any update?”
You just sighed and shook your head. She’s known about your crush on the older Jonin since the Chunin exams.
“Let’s hurry and get this mission over with,” Neji sighed as the four of you put on your coms.
“I’ll use my nose to track them down.”
“I think my eyes might be of more use.”
“My nose can sense them farther.”
“My eyes are stronger.”
You and Sakura just looked at each other as the two of them battled it out on who gets to be the Squad leader. You sighed, “Let’s just have Sakura be the leader okay? She is the smartest out of us.” you smiled nudging her. You were not about to be squad leader and have to tell the two stubborn jonin who gets to do what over the other.
“That’s right! We’ll use Kiba’s nose to get us going but when we get close, Neji we’ll switch to your byakugan so we can see a clearer image.”
“HA!”
Neji just scoffed.
“Kiba don’t rub it in, we’re using Neji as well.” you sighed as you walked off with Sakura in front of the two boys.
“You know, I don’t know why you’re being such a jerk to her.” Kiba sighed walking next to Neji.
“She’s not your business Kiba.”
“She may not be, but guys are waiting in line to ask her out and she’s only got eyes for you my man.” Kiba chuckled as he got on top of Akamaru and ran off so he could lead the way.
Neji stared at you as he kept his distance, he didn’t know if Kiba meant what he said, if only his eyes could see how you felt about him.
The four of you finished your mission with ease, after all you were four Jonin on an A rank mission.
Neji pulled behind and gently grabbed your arm to wait with him. You blushed at his touch. “Neji?”
“I want to ask you something.”
You two walked behind Sakura and Kiba, giving Sakura a slight “it’s okay” nod as she turned to look at the two of you.
“You can ask me anything.”
“Why did you ask me to train you on taijutsu all those years ago?”
You felt heat rising to your cheeks.
“Kakashi was your sensei at the time and he’s one of the best, and then there’s Guy sensei, and Lee, and even Naruto and Sasuke. Why did you ask me?”
You smiled, “I, you were a year above me, I wouldn’t have seen you much had I have asked someone else.”
The two of your hands rested by your sides accidentally grazing each other once again. You hoped that Neji wouldn’t put his hands in his pockets. He didn’t. Instead his fingers slowly intertwined loosely with yours. You blushed as you turned your head to stare at him.
“I’m sorry. About the way I’ve been treating you. I’m not good at this.”
“That’s okay.” you smiled, tightening the grip your fingers had on his. “We can figure it out together.

Memories - Part 1 | Deja Vu - Part 2
A/N: gotta say it started out cute but then bam angst sjdjdens i’m sorry i’m dramatic sumtyms 🤧 please let me know your thoughts 🥺
The Sharingan never forgets.
That’s among one of the few things that’s drilled into your mind as a child born in the Uchiha clan. Before you had even awakened your Sharingan, your late brother, Shishui, had already taught you this.
At a young age, you’ve always thought it was a blessing, especially to a shinobi like you. With the ability of the Sharingan to discern movements and to retain its information better than any other dojutsu, it enables you to progress faster than children your age.
Outside the shinobi life, however, it’s not really that useful, so it’s expected for you not to activate it at all. You don’t need to remember minor details of everyday life after all. But on some of your days off — on special days — although very rarely, you unconsciously activate your Sharingan when you’re with Neji.
It goes without saying that before the war, you’ve already gained quite a bit of control over the use of the Sharingan. You’re able to activate and deactivate it at will, although sometimes your emotions get the better of you and it messes your control. After the war, however, you’ve become adept at controlling both your emotions and your Sharingan, maybe even better than Sasuke.
But whenever Neji surprises you with affectionate gestures, you get so overwhelmed that you just can't control your body, and by extension, your dojutsu too.
No matter how hard you try, you’re unable to stop the blood rushing to your face. You’re unable to calm the violent thumping of your heart. You’re unable to get rid of the fluttering feeling in your stomach. You’re unable to prevent the Sharingan from activating. Especially on the rare occasions that he kisses the back of your hand tenderly after he walks you home, or when he kisses your lips before he leaves for a mission.
Neji isn’t good at romantic gestures, and so he keeps it to a bare minimum. But when he does these things, it always takes you by surprise.
He wouldn’t admit it, but he likes your cute reactions to his unpredictable acts. There’s always this short moment where your mind goes blank and your Sharingan manifests itself. This reassures him of your feelings for him because he knows he’s the only one who’ll be able to pull such a reaction from you. Not that he’s ever doubted you. You’ve always been so vocal about your feelings for him, after all.
On the flip side, while it embarrasses you that you can’t control your Sharingan when you’re with Neji, you like the way they activate themselves at those moments, as they’re able to help you remember the details of its aftermath — like the way Neji would always look down on the floor first before he meets your eyes, his cheeks tinted pink, and with the slightest upturn of his lips, almost as if he, himself, wasn’t expecting the onslaught of emotions that was brought about by his own actions. In mere seconds, you have all these memorized before he pulls away, and you play it over and over again in your mind until you’re branded with a new memory.
But the Sharingan is a curse as much as it is a blessing.
It’s a curse because it reminds you of the cruelty of the world. It doesn’t allow you to forget the scene of the Uchiha clan district after the massacre, even after knowing the true reason why it had to be done. It lets you remember the way you almost lost Neji from the Ten Tails’ attack during the war in his attempt to protect Naruto and Hinata.
And when Sasuke implanted Shisui’s eye to you, which he retrieved from Danzo before he annihilated him, the Sharingan lets you relive all his memories and experiences, and it paints you a picture of how unfair the world actually is, even more so to an Uchiha like you.
The unfair reality is further proven by an unexpected knock on your door a couple of weeks ago.
Hiashi. Hyuga Hiashi. The head of the Hyuga clan. Neji’s uncle.
He came to you with a deal, a proposition of sorts, but really it was just a threat in disguise as an offer.
“Leave Neji or else I’ll make sure he won’t be able to break free from his cage” is what he basically implied.
But to be precise, his words were, “The Hyuga clan is considering Neji to be the next heir, which would result in abolition of the main and branch family system altogether. Naturally, if he becomes the head of the clan, his curse seal will be removed, along with all the other branch family members’. However, there’s no telling if there’s going to be a change if he doesn’t get the position.
“You might have been keeping your relationship with him on the down-low, but the elders of the Hyuga clan know of it.
“To put it bluntly, we do not wish to be associated with the Uchiha in any way — so much that even disowning Neji has been put out there as an option, just in case — especially after what Sasuke pulled off after defeating the goddess.
“Moreover, if you were to bear a child together, there’s no telling what will happen to their kekkei genkai. It would be ideal to have him marry into the clan and follow tradition in order to preserve the Byakugan.
“I suppose you know where I’m going with this. It would be in his best interest if you call off whatever you have with him. Although this wouldn’t be a deal if there is nothing in it for you, right? Supposing Neji’s bright future is not enough for you, we are willing to arrange allowances of sorts.”
But before he could spout anything more, you cut him off by asking, “Does he know about this?”
“Not yet. But we’ll let him know soon enough.”
“Don’t. Keep it that way. I’ll handle this,” you told him, not caring if you didn’t sound respectful to a prominent figure such as himself. “I don’t need anything from your clan. All I want and need is for Neji to live a life that he deserves; a life that he was robbed off.”
Hiashi glared at you, offended by your words, but he didn't comment on it. Rather, he stared you down. His hardened expression morphing into suspicion the longer he looked at you; clearly he didn’t trust you. “How will you handle it?”
The only response he got from you is an intense stare with your Sharingan, and that alone was enough for him.
It’s frustrating to not have a choice, even when it comes to love, but in hindsight, you should’ve expected this. For all the troubles your ancestors caused in the past, it’s only natural for you to be this unfortunate.
Whatever blessing the Uchihas receive, it’s always paired with some type of misery. That’s just how it is, that’s how it would probably always be.
There’s no denying that in the end, it always, always hurts. But then again, you’re no stranger to pain and loss. And so is Neji. So surely, this would be for the best, at least that’s what you tell yourself over and over again in hopes that it will strengthen your resolve.
After all, Neji deserves a life where he doesn’t have to fear dying by the hands of the main branch family. He deserves a life where he can make choices of his own, without being tied down by his curse seal or his clan in general. And if leaving him means he’ll have all this and more, so be it.
As much as it is painful, it is hard, partly because of your waning resolve but especially because it’s Neji, who’s known for being an awfully perceptive shinobi. He’s almost never caught off guard, all the more when he’s with you, as he’s always keen on keeping you safe. Hence, you have to be meticulous and methodical.
The Sharingan’s ability to cast genjutsu is particularly harder to use against Hyugas due to their ability to see and sense the chakra concentrating by the eyes, enabling them to counter or avoid it entirely. Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami technique would’ve been quite useful, except you’re unable to use it yet because of the events prior to the war. Thus, you’ll have to rely on your own skills.
If timed right and casted properly, the genjutsu of the Sharingan has the ability to remove memories. To be precise, it can trick his mind into “forgetting” memories. But with years and years of memories between you and Neji, you know that you’ll have to cast it over and over again before everything will be completely wiped out.
You take advantage of the moments where Neji gives you affection, as you deem it the most subtle way to cast genjutsu on him without suspicion.
Although you have to admit, in the beginning you’ve been selfish, only removing memories of you and him that weren’t important — like the times he would accompany you in doing mundane tasks, or the times you both just lounge around after tiring missions. And because those are only minor memories, Neji is oblivious to the loss.
It gets exceptionally harder to cast the genjutsu once you’ve started erasing the major events in your relationship — the first date, the first kiss, the first time he held your hand, and the first time he introduced you as the love of his life. Until eventually, the affectionate acts dwindle down, and the only way you can use the Sharingan around him is when you ask him to train with you.
It’s only natural that the longer this goes on, the further you drift apart, and the more you lose him.
And it’s scary and painful because unlike Sasuke, Konoha has always been your home, but more specifically because of Neji. In fact, you can argue that Neji has always felt like home more than the village itself. You can walk the streets of Konoha but all it will ever scream is Neji’s name, and all it will ever show you is the memories you shared with him on every corner of the place.
The fact that you have to walk the streets without him is terrifying and foreign, and the only way you can avoid it altogether is by taking more and more missions, either the ones involving far away places or high rank missions that require every single bit of your concentration. Sometimes you even tag along to Sasuke’s expeditions to escape not only Neji’s overwhelming presence in the village, but also the thoughts of him.
It’s tiring and it’s heavy. But you’ve accepted the fact that you’re going to carry alone the memories for the two of you.
But this doesn’t go unnoticed by your friends, though they were quick to assume that things just didn’t work out between the two of you, and that you called your relationship off.
Ino is the first person to voice out her concern and her curiosity as she claimed it’s weird not seeing you hang out with Neji anymore.
“That’s just how it is, I suppose,” you shrug, trying to act nonchalant about everything despite the ache in your chest and the slight quiver of your voice.
She doesn’t comment further, thinking you probably didn’t want to talk about it.
But one day, when the whole clique — except for you and Sasuke — was hanging out, Ino can tell there was something wrong when Sakura asked if Neji remembered the time when you almost fell off a tree but he was there to catch you, and he furrowed his brows, saying he doesn’t recall that at all.
Break up or not, it’s highly unlikely for Neji to forget. Regardless of how minor something is, he always seems to remember them, especially when it involves you. And while he could’ve just been deflecting, there would’ve been no point in him denying that he remembers that occasion. Besides, Neji is blatantly honest, it’s one thing that you can count on when it comes to him, so really, how come he couldn’t remember that scenario at all?
This prompted Ino to observe Neji further out of concern and suspicion. She’d often find herself casually mentioning you and the feats you’ve both been through, but time and time again, Neji would tell her he has no recollection of those.
Ino wants to do something, anything really, just to clear her mind of suspicions, but she’s afraid she’s overstepping and interfering.
Neji takes notice of this. But even before that, he feels as though there’s something wrong, like something’s missing, but he doesn’t know what it is, and he doesn’t know what to do about it.
After all, genjutsu might’ve tricked his mind, but his heart is an entirely different case.
It comes as a surprise to Ino when Neji comes to visit her in Yamanaka’s flower shop, looking at your favorite flowers without a clue why.
With Ino being the only one who seems to be willing to talk about you with him, it’s her who he seeks out. That, and he thinks the Yamanaka’s mind jutsus could be of help.
Ino doesn’t hesitate to help after Neji asks for it. When she goes to explore Neji’s consciousness, the first thing that she senses is your chakra. The further she prods, the more she realizes that it’s you who have been tampering with his memories. Then she realizes that it’s genjutsu that you’ve used on him, and she quickly breaks him out of it.
You know instantly when the jutsu breaks, feeling as if there was a string that snapped, and it immediately renders you frozen.
Fear grips you as you think about how Neji would feel after his memories come back. Will he be able to tell it was you who did it? Will he be mad at you? Will you tell him the reason why you did it? Will he even listen?
But if he’d stop talking to you altogether… then that would still be a win, right? Because that’s what Hiashi wants, that’s what his clan wants. That’s the only condition for them to give back Neji’s freedom.
But is it worth it?
Is this what you want?
Is this what Neji would want?
You’d like to believe so. And that’s the last thought you have as the rogue shinobi you’re supposed to capture stabs a kunai deep into your gut.
Of all the times the genjutsu could have broken, it just had to be when you were facing a highly skilled ninja. It’s once again a reminder that life is unfair, but this time, it’s your choices that lead you to this.
Deja vu. That’s how you feel when you wake up after escaping death’s clutches once again.
You blink once, twice, and then you look around your surroundings. You’re back in Konoha’s hospital, but this time you don’t wake up to a sleeping Neji by your bed.
You’re alone, and you feel hollow.
But then the door to your room opens abruptly and you almost jump in surprise.
Your breath hitches as you find the familiar lavender eyes staring back at you.
He calls your name to you softly, as if in a trance, and you feel your heart stutter at how perfect your name sounds on his lips.
Before you know it, he’s by your side, gently holding your hands. With an untrained eye, it would seem that his face is void of any emotion, but from your years of experience with him, you can clearly point out the sadness in his eyes.
You break the silence by saying, “I’m sorry, Neji.”
“For what exactly?”
You look away in shame. “For trying to erase your memories of us.”
“Why’d you do it then?”
“Because…” you bite your lip. “That’s what’s best for you,” your voice cracks. “I’m not… We couldn’t— no — we shouldn’t be together.”
Neji gathers his thoughts, and it takes a couple of minutes before he speaks up. “The Sharingan may not be able to forget, but the Byakugan sees everything.”
And you understand what he’s trying to say: he can see through the lies you feed yourself.
Neji sighs, and it gets your attention. You peek at him, and only then have you noticed the bags under his eyes and the way his shoulders are slightly slumped.
He has always looked composed no matter the situation, but now he’s different.
“You used to tell me everything,” he says dejectedly.
The way he says it and the way he pleads with his eyes breaks something in you and you spill everything to him.
You’re crying and stuttering and you aren’t sure if you’re making sense. But Neji always, always understands you.
And by the end of your piece, you’re wrapped securely in his arms.
“You’re alright,” he comforts you. “We’re alright.”
“But Hiashi—”
“We’ll figure it out. We always do.”

Warnings: ANGST, war, death
THE 1
It had been a month since the war had come to an end, and you were outside of the training field at 6am. Your eyes were red and tired from the lack of sleep and your hands were shaking from the two cups of coffee you drank in the morning.
“You’re already done with your training Y/N-chan?” Rock Lee’s voice made your tired eyes snap open.
“Yeah,” your voice was low and soft, making Rock Lee raise an eyebrow at you.
“So you’re not training with us again?”
“I have things to do Lee, I’m sorry.” You said a bit too quickly and walked away, leaving a confused and worried Rock Lee at the training field.
And it had also been a month since you stopped training with Team Guy, but you just couldn’t bring yourself to do it. Things were different and even though TenTen and Rock Lee did their best to cheer you up even during their own suffering, it wasn’t enough and you knew they didn’t deserve your lack of effort and your extreme fits of anger during your training sessions, so you decided it was just better to train on your own.
You walked at a fast pace, looking down at the concrete and grass, doing your best to avoid looking at every place and spot in Konoha that would bring back a memory with him.
Once you stepped on the familiar carpet outside of your house, you took a deep breath before opening the door.
As you took a shower you allowed your eyes to rest as tears fell down your face, mixing with the hot water that was washing away the dirt from the training.
“It’s been enough Y/N, you can’t keep doing this to yourself,” you whispered to yourself before screaming the next words out, “IT’S NOT EVEN YOUR FAULT!”
And after those words left your mouth, you promised yourself to accept the way life would be now, you tried to see things different, to walk around Konoha and remember the good times instead of being angry over how things turned out to be.
But the doubt would still cross your mind every now and then, especially those nights when it was still hard to fall asleep because a loud noise brought war flashbacks to your mind. You tossed around in bed, making up scenarios in your head without realising warm tears were falling down your face as you pictured what your life could’ve been if he were still around and if you’d known.
It made you angry, you even cursed at him at the sky as the tears kept falling down your cheeks.
Why didn’t he say it earlier? Why didn’t he try harder?
If he wanted you, why didn’t he show it?
You knew there was something going on between the two of you, it was obvious.
The two of you had made a thousand of memories around Konoha, there wasn’t a single spot that didn’t bring you back to a memory with him.
Sharing a dango, eating ramen, training together, getting him out of his tiring trainings with Might Guy, watching the stars as you rambled about your day and he just stared at you, him walking you home just to spend more time with you, being in your kitchen and asking him to use his Byakugan to help you find the chocolate bar you’d lost and him rolling his eyes at you and groaning about how his Byakugan shouldn’t be used for things like that but doing it anyway because it’s you and simply everything.
Everything reminded you of him.
And everything also reminded you he was gone.
The two of you were really something and everyone around you could see it. Everyone but yourselves, or at least none of you cared to admit it.
You knew you had feelings for him ever since the first night he walked you home and came up with a lame excuse that he did it because it’s the proper thing to do if he’s a man, and you just smiled at him because why didn’t he walk TenTen home then? Or better.. his cousin Hinata? Why you?
What you didn’t know back then though was that he felt the same way about you. He had it all bottled up and decided to let you know at the most heartbreaking time.
Just a few hours before he left the world, he didn’t have to say the words to let you know that you would’ve also been the one and it was with the simple act of a hug.
You were arguing about how he wanted you to stay behind and not follow Naruto, he kept insisting your jutsus would be of better use from behind and not upfront but you knew he meant he didn’t want you to get hurt, going to the front with Naruto was the most dangerous thing to do yet you insisted.
“This is a war Neji, we have to risk it all!” You tried to make your voice heard through the loud noise.
“You don’t need to go directly to the lion’s mouth to help!” His voice was loud and he seemed angry.
“Oh and you do?!”
“I have to!”
“So do I!”
“You’re so frustrating Y/N!”
“Right back at you!”
“Then do as you please.” His voice was calming down but his eyes were still filled with anger.
“Oh I will.” You snapped out.
And as you were walking up front he grabbed you by the arm to pull you towards him and hug you.
Your eyes snapped open at his action, but you hugged him back.
You remember it all too well, his long hair covering your eyes as his hands pressed you hard towards him, afraid of losing you. You cried at his shoulders and you didn’t know exactly why.
Your tears had probably been a result from the fear, the anger, the tiredness and the anxious feelings the war was causing you but they were also from surprise and the warmth you were feeling from his hug.
He had never hugged you before, at least not like that.
And that’s how you knew he loved you somehow.
As you remembered the last seconds with him, you grabbed a pillow and hugged it tight against your chest, pretending it was him.
You now pray and hope with your heart he can somehow hear your cries and know the love you have for him. You like to make up scenarios in your head about him being safe and healthy and happy because it makes you rest just a little bit better.
It did anger you how time ran out for the two of you and how you had to wake up alone every single morning now. It also drove you crazy how you kept wondering what life would’ve been like if he were still around.
Because you know that he was the one.
And if he were still around, he would’ve been the one laying next to you at this very moment.
Hi sweets I read ur imagines and LOVED them😍😍 can I request an angst one with Neji who breaks up with his girl to be with tenten? Thank you so much❤️❤️
I’m so glad you like what i write that means a lot! I’ve never been in a relationship so i’ve never been apart of a breakup, but i tried my best from what i’ve seen in movies to write this up :)
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
One week
It had been an entire week since you’d seen Neji.
At first it didn’t concern you. You simply assumed he needed some space or had urgent clan matters to resolve
Even your friends reassured you with confidence. He would come back to you and have a simple explanation for his absence. Neji was known to be anything but deceitful- especially towards you
That’s why you weren’t sure you wanted to hear what he had to say anymore once he finally showed up at your door.
All you could do was silently stare at your boyfriends eyes, wordlessly pleading him to meet your gaze.
They were cold and bleary, such a contrast to the tender and focused look you were so used to seeing from him.
It was clear he was unwilling to look at you, so you stepped back into your house, leaving room for him to follow you inside.
You sat in the living room as he took off his shoes and coat, focusing on your breathing in an attempt to calm your nerves
But the second he entered the room and sat across from you, the weight in your stomach only intensified and your breathing becomes shallow.
Normally you would patiently wait and allow Neji to begin the conversation. You found he tends to open up more when he can start the conversation at his own pace.
But he had a week, and you’re not in the mood to wait.
“Neji,” your voice shakes out, “Say something to me. Anything. I need to know what you’re thinking.”
At the sound of your voice, he finally drags his face out from where it was wedged between his hands, leaving them on the side to rub his temples
“I can’t keep doing this, y/n. Not with you” He sighs out. His voice is sturdy, but his face barely holds up the same facade.
Neji wasn’t one for many words, so you learned how to understand his short phrases. So to you, he couldn’t have been more clear
Your eyes sting from the tears you’re refusing to shed, but those 8 words seemed to invade every part of your being until the lump in your throat was too painful to bear and a sharp sob escapes your wobbling lips.
‘not with you’
Those words danced around you until the tears in your eyes blurred your vision completely.
Neji watches his words break you down as he is unable to provide you comfort. His hand clamps down by his side as he refrains from instinctively reaching out to you. He feels cruel.
You finally collect yourself enough to force out a question through clenched teeth.
“If not me then who, Neji. Who?
You wipe tears from your eyes and meet his, your face feels hard as you prepare yourself to hear what he was going to say. To hear who he was going to be happy with as he left you alone with nothing.
He starts, “I don’t know if it’s a good ide-” “Say it dammit!” you interrupt
The idea of him with another woman had easily turned your grief into rage, and you were more than ready for this conversation to end.
He frowns, slightly taken aback by your sudden aggression, but keeps his eyes trained on you as he answers.
“Tenten”
You were sure in that moment your heart had physically shattered and that you were choking on its pieces.
“You said not to worry about her. You said she was a teammate and nothing else!” your voice was overflowing with emotion as you shouted at him
Neji, on the other hand maintained a low and calm voice, which only infuriates you to a whole new level.
“She was, but things developed and changed and I can’t be in a relationship with you when-” he paused to think “-when I have stronger feelings for someone else.”
That proved to be the last straw. You couldn’t handle to hear anything else
You were only able to whisper a “get out” to him, but the venom in your tone was clear, and he stood up and walked to the door alone and proceeded to leave
He turns one last time to look at you. His eyes were drooped and if you weren’t blinded by the hurt and rage, you would’ve been able to make out the tears forming and falling from his eyes as he whispered a final goodbye and left.
She felt like she was moving backwards. Everyone was improving and moving forward, she felt stuck in the same place.
When she attended Neji's funeral, she doesn't remember crying, just staring at his picture. When she comforted Lee and Hinata, she didn't feel anything. She just felt numb. Like none of this was real. Like it was just a bad dream
Naruto and Hinata's wedding is soon. Tenten is extremely happy for them, she is. But she just doesn't feel it. She gets so irritated when someone even mentions it. The wedding was her breaking point. She cried herself to sleep when it was first announced. She just missed him so much.
Everyone has scars over their hearts from the war. But they were all healing. Tenten felt like the tear in her just kept getting bigger and bigger. Why didn't this happen before? Why didn't this happen during the funeral?
She was moving backwards and breaking down as everyone moves forward and built up.
