I've seen plenty of Lentinus sp. around but this was my first introduction to Neolentinus. A gorgeous cluster and a couple of young, rather thick-stemmed lads on the next stump over. Happy Friday the 13th everyone! 🍄🖤

Neolentinus lepideus. The rather dramatic common name for this mushroom - train wrecker - comes from its habit of growing unbidden (and quite profusely) out of timber structures, particularly railway sleepers.

Train Wrecker - Neolentinus lepideus

This is an edible mushroom of the species Neolentinus lepideus (Gloeophyllales - Gloeophyllaceae), found in Europe and widely distributed throughout much of North America.

These mushrooms are sometimes called the Train Wrecker due to their ability to colonize chemically treated wood (i.e. railroad ties).
