Puppet By Mistake - Episode 2

You saw last week the pilot episode of the web series of Puppet By Mistake and I’m going to naturally assume that you all watched and LOVED it. And because you loved it, here is episode two of it — Top Puppet.

This episode was a lot of fun to film only because we had a man attached to that puppet arm having to hulk over a pretty, scantily clad lady to make it seem like a puppet was having his way with her. There was a lot of laughs and awkward moments and in the end, I think we made something was worthy of being a Top Gun parody.

Review of Nnedi Okorafor's "Akata Witch"

I just finished my second read-through of Nnedi Okorafor’s novel, Akata Witch. The book is written for a young adult audience, though it felt grittier and weightier than typical YA fiction. It is the story of an Akata or Nigerian-American witch named Sunny. She discovers her magical powers and a secret society of magical “Leopard People” hidden all across the world. She and her three new friends are tasked with finding and catching a real-life killer, with only each other and their developing skills to rely on.

The characters in Akata Witch are beautifully done. While with most young adult fiction one expects a certain amount of stereotype to be present in the cast of characters, Okorafor’s characters feel more like real life people and less like a list of characteristics that the author added together. Not only do the characters have unique talents, they all have their own unique and glaring flaws, which keeps the characters real, surprising, and enjoyable throughout the book. The dialogue does feel a bit simplistic in places, though that’s appropriate for a young adult novel. But the pacing felt great, and the words always felt true to the characters and situations in the book.

The most unique, vibrant, and captivating aspect of this novel, though, has to be the setting. The magical society aspect had a bit of a Harry Potter flair to it, but in a way completely unique to Okorafor. The author’s obvious knowledge of and love for the Nigerian setting flew off the page in a way that made the reader fall in love with the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of Nigeria. Every single ounce of the novel’s plot and setting felt completely alive and original. Fans of fantasy fiction looking for something new and different should absolutely read Nnedi Okorafor’s novels.

Review of Maria V. Snyder's "Poison Study"

Review of Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

Maria Synder’s Poison Study is a young adult fantasy fiction novel, set in a politically charged fantasy setting. The story opens with the imminent execution of the main character, setting a strong, emotional, and intriguing tone for the rest of the novel. The style of writing and unique setting were every bit as great as I was anticipating in this novel.

Snyder used the first-person narrative masterfully, and her main character jumped off the page from the very beginning. She created a very compelling background for her character, and she did a great job of revealing the character’s history a little bit at a time throughout the novel so that the reader wasn’t left in the dark, but there were still some surprises at the end. The secondary characters were also well scripted so that the reader was still guessing until near the very end which characters were the “good guys” and which were the “bad guys.”

There was really only one hiccup towards the end of the book, however, this didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book. Without getting too much into spoilers (but seriously, if you don’t want any spoilers, don’t finish this paragraph), the main character’s goals and motivations changed later in the book from being focused on her own pain to someone else, and the book itself seemed to follow suit. Ultimately this is an artistic choice on the part of the author, and whether it was a good or bad one is hard to say. The book was set up very well for a sequel, but still had a definite and satisfying ending.

Overall, the plot was very unique and enjoyable, and the main characters very memorable. Exploring the politics of a kingdom in a fantasy setting is a unique concept for a young adult fantasy novel, and I thought the intrigue aspect was spot on. I would rate this book four out of five stars; a very enjoyable read for young adults or anyone who enjoys fantasy fiction.
