I've wanted to make a post about this for a while, but the constant de-sexualization of disability is something that deeply pisses me off and I think we need to talk about it more. Autistic people are constantly portrayed as weird asexual beings grossed out or confused by their friends kissing. I have seen so many people seem genuinely baffled when my wheelchair-user friend reveals that she has sex. Doctors will recommend that people with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia not be sexually active when there is not medical reason for doing so. It is deeply infantilizing and dehumanizing and it pisses me the fuck off.

Heyo! Friendly reminder that if you say “you can’t use this term to describe your own experience, it’s for people with x neurodivergency only,” you are actively preventing people from being able to figure out who they are and thus preventing them from being able to get the accommodations they need. Neurodivergency isn’t an exclusive club or a zero-sum game. We are a community who doesn’t normally receive help, which means we need to help each other—and part of that means reaching out to people who think they’re neurotypical to help them realize that maybe they’re not.

The more people who realize they’re neurodivergent, the more attention we’ll get as a community and the more resources there’ll be for accommodations. If you’d rather police people’s wording than help more them be comfortable in their own skin, you should rethink why you’re doing what you do.

We’re a community, not a competition. Celebrate what brings us together—don’t enforce artificial divides.

Adhd hack: Whenever you do something productive (draw, write, go outside, anything) listen to the same song on repeat. Every single time. Eventually, this will trick your brain into associating that song with productivity and you will be able to just turn that song on and poof, creative mode
