Nerts.
- Sonic the Hedgehog IDW #6
There isn’t a lot that I really miss from my family, but sometimes I realize that they had the right idea sometimes.
When they got together on holidays, everyone brought something. More than was needed, always. So much food. Homemade booze. Homemade candy. Homemade desserts. Homemade fucking everything. Everyone had something they brought that they were very proud of, and everyone made sure to appreciate it.
They didn’t pretend to be civilized. There was a table full of food, and people came and went as they wanted. They ate wherever in the house they felt like - watching Amadeus in the front of the living room, playing bridge in the middle, sitting and chatting by the windows in the rear. In the kitchen, in the dining room...ok, they couldn’t eat there
Because that’s where they played cards. Nerts. Sometimes continental rummy, but mostly nerts. And the adult players, they had done their due preparation: they each had at least one child lined up to cover for them for bathroom breaks, food breaks, or mixing-a-drink breaks. Nerts isn’t a game you can just pause everything for. It’s a game of speed. It is NOT turn-based. There was danger involved, egos were involved, and the threat of injury was very real. Accidental, of course. Of course.
Singing. One aunt had a guitar, and they all loved music. They weren’t great at it, no one sang in the choir or anything. But get them together in a circle around the 4th of July bonfire, and they sang like rock angels. Mostly from their era, Beatles and such. But there was a wider range, overall.
So I’ve decided. When I have my own situation figured out, I will have this gathering. Not with family, because in all other ways, they’re fucked up like you would not believe, but with friends and friends of friends.
There will be food people are proud of making, that people love to eat, that is eaten with abandon at all hours and in all places. There will be card games. Regular Bicycle-deck games. Yeah, I know that’s not my usual, but I’ll teach anyone who needs to know before it happens. Continental rummy and nerts. @galasdian can help in this.
And there will have to be singing. This is not something I’ve seen at a lot of gatherings outside of my family, so it will likely be awkward. It won’t be karaoke, it’ll be fucking sitting-round-the-fire singing of whatever the hell songs make us happy that more than one person knows the lyrics to (for the most part).
Maybe I should learn to play guitar. I’d never considered it before, but...maybe.
A Collection of Ferrety Faces to Commemorate This Friday! If you stare at them long enough, he’s kind of adorable (as long as he’s not speaking).
M*A*S*H 30 Day Challenge- Day 16- Frank or Charles?
This one is actually really tough for me. Ultimately, I am going to say Charles. The passing of David Ogden Stiers was actually what drew me back into M*A*S*H these past few months. I’ve loved it ever since I can remember but it was thinking back on his most memorable moments that a made me re-purchase the boxset (I have purchased the set 3 times now btw).
I enjoy Charles as both a foil and a nemesis for Hawkeye and BJ. He’s got substantially more depth and more character than Frank was ever allowed to have. He can be the butt of a joke but he’s also very capable of making them himself. He’s a genius who is arrogant, haughty, spoiled, sheltered, and pompous. He’s also unexpectedly gentle and soulful and it’s in those moments where I always find myself really enjoying him. My favourite Charles moments include him bonding with Hawkeye over their fathers (so lovely), befriending the soldier with the speech impediment, trying to get the pianist whose lost sensation in his right hand to work on playing with his left, his letter to the small child who mailed him the maple leaf, him receiving his childhood sledding cap for Christmas and, of course, his pinnacle moment in Goodbye, Farewell and Amen when he smashes his Mozart record. I like that he has such a passion for music and is so moved by it but also feels so hurt that he has no gift for it. It humbles him. Also, I love, love, love his voice! LOVE IT!
A word on Frank Burns, because I did say this was a challenge for me. I am a huge fan of the early seasons and I think Larry Linville is hilarious. His delivery and timing are always spot on, he prat falls like a champ and he’s adorable in the weirdest way. Frank Burns is a pretty awful guy. I wouldn't want a Frank Burns in my life. I think there are far too many Frank Burns types running the world and it’s terrifying but I do think that Larry Linville manages to give this character a soul. There are rare moments when I truly feel for Frank Burns; watching him say goodbye to Margaret as she flies away on her honeymoon, the sad footage from him poorly attended nuptials, knowing that he grew up with no friends and being constantly ridiculed and made fun of (by his own family even). Or those moments where he really seems to be trying to reach out and be friend the other swamp rats. There are glimmers of humanity in him. Then he says or does something horrible and I just want Hawkeye and Trapper to put guts in his boots.
In the end, I think I would get a long better with Charles which is why I choose him over Frank. Both performers are excellent and they both bring something great to the series.
You don't have to talk like a rasping buzz saw or a screech owl. How your voice sounds is up to you.
Som slang phrases are colorful..
