MISC DOODLE DUMP / KUVOROT

a doodle dump of misc sketches/WIPs featuring monsters from my newest headworld "body of kuvorot" ! i've actually made quite a dent in the first sketch and i'm almost done with the full piece. the other three feature two old characters, zentaur and archmun. the last sketch is a concept doodle of a new character, neryssa!

This has been in my WIPs for so long, and it was almost finished; finally found some strength to pick it back.

In Chapter 10 of Year 3, there's a mention of Neryssa, a Selkie from Leuda that studied the unknown element in the past. I wanted to make up some design for her (not a canon NPC!)

Better view over her face below; also the paintings on her arm are symbols for all four elements (wind, fire, earth, water) plus the unknown element flowing in between them. :3

At the time of this chapter she would be about 10 years older than that, but yeah. I wanted to draw some cool Selkie girl.

Neryssa

37. Is your character more concerned with defending their honor, or protecting their status?

Good question... Neryssa grew up on the streets, and I think when you’re fighting for your survival honor doesn’t have that an important meaning. For the status she has later she worked and fought hard, it gives her priviliges and access to knowledge she could only have dreamt of, so she’s certainly more concerned with not losing her social standing anymore.

40. How does your character treat people in service jobs?

She doesn’t often get in contact with them, but when she does she always treats them well. She knows how it feels like to be pushed around by people who think they’re bigger or better, and she knows that if she hadn’t been as lucky she could be in the same situation and now be a servant to some noble lord.

44. How easy or difficult is it for your character to say “I love you?” Can they say it without meaning it?

It’s kind of hard for her to say it because she’s a rather reserved and private person. She doesn’t like showing her feelings too openly, as a means of self-protection. As for being able to say it without meaning it though? Yes, she’d definitely be capable of that if it helps her to get what she wants.

11. In what situation was your character the most afraid they’ve ever been?

I can think of three situations :D Hmmm... I think the one that scarred him for life the most, because it left him with a permanent fear of rivers and travelling on/over water, was an incident a couple of years before Inquisition. The clan was travelling through a valley, following the course of a river, and eventually wanted to cross the mountains to get to the north. They were surprised by a storm and a flood and had to move to higher ground quickly. The only way to cross the river quickly was an old bridge. It would have been able to take the weight of sevral aravels, but while some of them crossed it a torn out tree carried by the river hit the bridge and destroyed it. Tamlen was one of the people on the bridge while it happened and got flushed away along with everyone else and two aravels. He still doesn’t know how he managed to get out of the river alive, and not everyone survived that incident. There was no moment when he was as scared as when he got swallowed by the ice-cold water, no orientation, nothing to hold on to and just chaos and darkness and cold around him.

12. In what situation was your character the most calm they’ve ever been?

The most calm, hmmm, let me think... One of the calmest moments was probably some time after defeating Corypheus when he and a few other memebers of the Inquisition went to Wycome to visit clan Lavellan. Some of them stayed at an inn in the city during the visit, Tamlen (and after some initial reluctance Dorian as well) stayed with the clan during the night, because he missed sleeping in his own “bed”. Dorian stayed with him, and although it was terribly cramped he still enjoyed every moment of it. The most calm he was when he woke up one early morning, cold air coming in from outside, but he was safe and sound (and cozy and warm :D) in Dorian’s arms. He heard the leaves rustling in the wind, the familiar voices of his clan members and in the distance the sea. He hadn’t felt so much at peace in a long time, and also not for a long while after they had left again.

19. What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before?

I would say to some degree his clinginess. He’s scared of being left and that sometimes turns into clingy or even possessive behaviour. Not a nice thing at all, and although he tries to overcome it (and has to overcome it if he wants a long distance relationship to work) he still really struggles with it sometimes. It hasn’t ruined anything so far yet though, and his other relationship before Dorian ended because of other reasons.

This would work with Neryssa. She comes across as a bit overly-serious sometimes, but she is very ambitious and wants to make the best of any chance she gets. She doesn’t shy away from hard work, and she certainly isn’t one to get up to nonsense or be easily used by others.

So interesting how Neryssa smells like flowers! I was expecting a strong almost masculine scent! And I love your answer to 7 :D Poor Tamlen is probably blushing his ears off!

About Neryssa: oh, really? That’s interesting :D Actually I wasn’t 100% sure what to reply, since I have a bit of a hard time describing scents. But I definitely think that she would love the smell of flowers, maybe sleep with a bag of dried wild flowers under her pillow. She grew up under very bad circumstances in one of the poorest districts of the city she lives in. There weren’t many plants or flowers around, so when she visits the garden of the academy for the first time she feels like she’s in a different world. A very bright and positive one, quite the contrary to what she’s used to, and she connects that hopeful feeling to the scent of flowers.

And about Tamlen: yes :’D That’s him right now:

I haven’t used this one in a while (whenever he’s wearing the pajamas you can tell that it’s a very old drawing/ screenshot :’D). I need to make some new reaction drawings from him soon…

1. What would be their twitter name? What sorts of tweets would they tweet?

That’s a good question, hmmm… I don’t think she’d have an extravagant or unusual name and just go by “neryssa”. Plain and simple. The stuff she’d post would be a mix of personal updates (for example “listening to professor XYZ’s theories about ancient elven magic was very interesting today”) and retweets of obscure twitter short-stories. She’d probably reflect about some of her own theories, too.

4. What’s their favorite scent? Do they smell like that?

She likes flowery, sweet scents and yes, she smells like that as well.

3. What’s on their top queue on Netflix?

(I first had to google what that queue is because I have to admit that I have no idea how Netflix works :’D So… as far as I understand it it’s like a list containing what you’re going to watch next?)

Well… probably a movie or series someone recommended him some time ago that he didn’t manage to watch yet. I’m really not sure, because I actually don’t see him as someone who watches many movies or TV shows at home. He prefers going to the cinema, with friends or with a date. In a modern au he shares an apartment with Sera, so in case they have Netflix there would probably rather be something she picked on top of that queue. Or, when he moves in with Dorian, something he picked.

Asking the really important questions, I see :’D I already did ~7~, I hope you don’t mind if I just copy/paste my reply for that!

7. Are they a bottom or top or versatile?

He’s a top, definitely. But with Dorian he also gets to experience some new things, if you know what I mean ;)

9. If they were to be compared to a canon character, who would that be? (Spirit animal)

Is it just me or is that question phrased in a strange way?

As for the canon character: I can’t think of one that is exactly like Tamlen. Well, maybe ironically he’s a bit like the Origins Tamlen, character-wise. They’re both a bit reckless definitely, and tend to get in trouble. Another one would be Sera, who protects her friends no matter the cost and isn’t scared to use her fists if necessary. He also shares some traits with Dorian, and others too. There isn’t just one, at least none I could think of now :’D

Malanna Lavellan:

8. Describe their morning routine. Do they wake up early or sleep in? Do they press the snooze button a bunch of times or do they immediately get up?

I haven’t put much thought into a modern au with her yet, so I’m going to answer for how she’d be like in the Dalish camp.

Just like her famous cousin she’s a hunter and used to getting up early, but she has a harder time with it and sleeps in sometimes (involuntarily). The first thing she does after getting up is make her bed/ put away her bed-roll, depending on where she’s sleeping. Then she eats breakfast, something simple that can be prepared quickly, maybe also something sweet with berries. She doesn’t like tea so she resorts to water or hot milk with honey. Afterwards she gets dressed etc., usually just in time before the other hunters want to leave the camp.
