Neufchateau, Belgium - 2020
The senior Academician, M. Francois de Neufchateau, had himself, in his thirteenth year, received a prize from a provincial Academy. This glorious incident, again brought into notice, was compared with the new triumph, the fifteen years were placed beside the thirteen, a parallel was drawn between the two prodigies, and it was predicted of Victor, that he would be another Francois de Neufchateau. The aged laureate wished to know him whose youth repeated the splendors of his own ; the more as at the time of his prize, Voltaire (for that dated back to Louis XV.) had consecrated him a poet and publicly adopted him : *' I must yield to a successor, And I hail in you my heir." M. Francois de Neufchateau, to whom these lines were recalled, was charmed to repeat them in his turn and to be the Voltaire of somebody He expressed his desire before a friend of Abel ; Victor went to see him, and there soon ensued an interchange of rhymes. One day the Decotte school was covered with glory ; M. Francois de Neufchateau invited Victor to dinner. There was one whom the old Academician admired as much as Voltaire. Parmentier, who intro- duced into France parmentieres ; for M. Francois de Neufchateau would not have said himself, or allowed any one else to say,"potatoes" , under any pretext. He had made himself the advocate, the patron, the devotee of the sacred tuber. He had a large garden, which was entirely given up to the culture, I might almost say to the worship of the parmentiere. To prove that one could live, and live well on nothing but parmentieres, he would not eat anything else. As, however, he was fond of good living, he taxed the imagination of his cook to invent for parmentieres forms and flavors of various kinds. The parmentiere assumed all shapes,- and each dish was a surprise. You were served with a cutlet, it was potatoes ; a fish, it was potatoes; a croquet of rice, still potatoes.
Victor Hugo, By A Witness of His Life
“ M. Francois de Neufchateau, the praiseworthy cultivator of the memory of Parmentier, made a thousand efforts to have pomme de terre [potato] pronounced parmentiere, and succeeded therein not at all. “ -- Les Miserables, 1.3.1, The Year 1817
