What are the biggest threats to Sri Lankan wildlife and why?
Surrounded by the stunning Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a beautiful island blooming with lush greenery and wildlife and popularly referred to as the ‘pearl of the Indian ocean.’ Home to a diverse range of fauna and flora species, Sri Lanka is a goldmine for tourists looking to explore astounding wildlife. However, over the years, the Sri Lankan wildlife has been greatly impacted by human activities such as deforestation and as a result, many acts have been implemented for the conservation of biodiversity in Sri Lanka.
One of the biggest threats to Sri Lankan wildlife is deforestation. With the rapid urbanization in the recent decades, many plots of land have been cleared and trees have been cut down for cultivation, roads and construction. Studies have shown that the amount of land that was covered by the forest has decreased to an alarming 20% from an initial 70% in the 1900s due to deforestation. This has led to a serious habitat loss of wildlife. Moreover, climate change has also had a significant impact on wildlife. Rapidly increasing global temperature caused by global warming due to increased greenhouse gases has contributed to the loss of certain habitats and resulted in endangered species.
To counteract this negative impact, the Sri Lankan government has passed multiple laws to protect the wildlife and have implemented heavy fines on poaching and excess deforestation. Multiple wildlife organisations and volunteers have begun the process of replanting trees in lands that have undergone severe deforestation and numerous campaigns have also been conducted to raise awareness. In addition, the use of carbon-neutral products such as the use of electric cars has been encouraged in the last few years to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide; a greenhouse gas that can cause global warming, into the atmosphere. As the majority of these threats to wildlife have been caused due to human activities, it is a key responsibility of every Sri Lankan to help protect the beautiful biodiversity on the island.
