- The new BBC series Giri/Haji -
“Giri/Haji’ will be on BBC2 tonight,” I received a text a few weeks ago. To me, it sounded like the name of an Italian or Indian food. I didn’t have a clue that it was the title of a drama set in Tokyo & London. I’d never heard of ‘Giri (=Duty)-Haji (=Shame) as a Japanese noun before. It was new to me.
It is true that ‘Duty’ & ‘Shame’ symbolizes the core mentality of Japanese tradition.
The observation of Japanese tradition from outside Japan is spot on. I imagine that it might not have been given such a title, if it had been made by a Japanese TV production company.
As far as I remember, Chinese actors have always appeared as Japanese figures, since 007 series, even in Gaisha movies. Known Japanese actors were acting in it. The protagonist was a Japanese actor, too. On top of that, they were speaking fluent English and acting naturally. That was cool!
Despite the drama never allowing the Japanese to leave Tokyo, or the British, leaving London, it manages to allow them to naturally exist in both Japan & the UK. It is a Japanese & English bilingual drama.
I felt so good to satisfy my Japanese & English, bilingual brain.
After watching Giri/haji, I feel that I do not have to take the side of either the Japanese or British anymore. I can stay just as I am.
Perhaps we should enjoy living in accordance with the times. Facing major changes with new generations, by revealing our own traditions to each other and not keeping them as our burden.
[Giri/Haji was screened on BBC Two on Thursdays at 9pm and BBC iPlayer. It will premiere globally on Netflix in 2020.]

I've been reading for school and I was reminded of this. I hope we all remember that the climate crisis is still a thing and humanity is still gonna end probably. I literally feel zero feelings about the entirety of my species and also the entirety of the land I live on both being completely destroyed. Every time I think about it I'm just kind of numb. Maybe because it's just such a huge thing that it feels theoretical. Bur look at the children. Look at my brother, and his friends. They're so young. They have the rest of their lives ahead of them and they don't deserve to face the climate crisis. Look at my nephew. That child is a baby. And he deserves to grow up in a world that is thriving with people that are thriving. Look at my camp kids. They need nature. They need stability. They need safety. They need a healthy Earth. When I think about the multitudes of real children that are going to live through this, that's when the panic sets in. It's not us that are going to be fucked by this. It's the younger generations. But we owe it to the younger generations to create a new world that is in harmony with nature and each other.
