Now everyone around the world can watch a livestream of the Winter Solstice 2025 from Newgrange in the Boyne Valley, Co Meath, Ireland, as it happens.
Newgrange is a Stone Age (Neolithic) monument in the Boyne Valley, County Meath, Ireland.
The Winter Solstice is an astronomical phenomenon that marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs on 21 or 22 December, when the sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn. At sunrise on the shortest day of the year, for 17 minutes, direct sunlight can enter the Newgrange monument, not through the doorway, but through the specially contrived small opening above the entrance known as the ‘roof box’, to illuminate the Chamber.
For more information, go to: Experience the Winter Solstice live from Newgrange.
This year's event begins at 08:40 GMT / UTC on 21 December 2025.
Happy Winter Solstice.
Gavrinis is a small island in the Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany, France. It contains the Gavrinis tomb, a Neolithic passage tomb built around 4200–4000 BC, making it one of the world's oldest surviving buildings. Stones inside the passage and chamber are covered in megalithic art. It is likened to other Neolithic passage tombs such as Barnenez in Brittany and Newgrange in Ireland.
