he's gorgeous
Dream is defined by the dreamers, not the other way round. And that makes him somewhat unknowable, which I feel is really the core conflict he has to contend with (on a very meta level, but it is something that runs like a red thread through his whole story: no one really understands him). So if we assumed that one of the main questions of “Fables and Reflections” (well, the whole of The Sandman) is, “What are we giving up to understand something fully (and that includes ourselves)”, it gets really heavy (it’s probably most prominent in Soft Places, but it’s really everywhere).
Because I think Dream does understand his own nature. He knows what he is and what he isn’t. He knows he’s essentially… unknowable. And the knowledge of being essentially unknowable is at least what partly undoes him (I maintain Orpheus was just the straw that broke the camel’s back because it gave him a reason he could consolidate with his sense of who he was). Because what does it mean if the very personification of that which can never be fully known literally can’t “unknow” himself enough to keep going? It hurts my brain in so many ways…
