“Ten outta ten. Can I give him a sticker?” Oliver smiles.

So you left your five-year-old in my hands, giving me the rundown: snack in the fridge, markers and paper in the drawer, bedtime no later than eight. Oliver had been excited—maybe too excited—for “boys’ night with Niall.” What could go wrong?

And honestly? It was going great. We built a pillow fort. We fought imaginary dragons. We coloured dinosaurs… well, I coloured a vaguely green potato-looking blob, and he coloured a terrifyingly accurate T-Rex eating my potato.

Sometime after the second peanut-butter sandwich, somewhere between the space sloths’ dramatic monologue and the third round of “Would You Rather,” I blinked. Just… blinked. And apparently fell asleep mid-story.

You step through the front door to quiet. But your little boy isn’t sleeping. No—he’s calmly sketching something on a piece of paper, tongue poking out in concentration. A fluffy blanket—your throw from the guest room—is tucked over my chest. Like nothing happened. Like he’s the babysitter and I’m the kid who couldn’t hang.

“Mum,” he whispers, holding up a drawing of what looks suspiciously like me in a superhero cape. “I didn’t wake him. He fell asleep after the story. He was snoring a little bit. I covered him with the blanket.”

“Terrible,” I said honest then softened with a smile. “But not hopeless. Try again.”

(while you count clouds) was supposed to be the prequel to a Nouis fic that was like, chock full of existential crises and deep ruminations about the concept of the soul and whether or not robots can fall in LOVE. loosely, Niallbot schedules an upgrade where they’re given human likeness (Zayn calls this a sex bot upgrade) and makes themself useless as a research bot (which is what Louis designed them for) and they have to be decommissioned so Louis sneaks them out of the facility he works at so they don’t end up as scrap, and Zayn’s connections hooks them up with a fake identity so they can live life as a human even though they’re NOT human and Louis is kinda like HOW DO ROBOTS FEEL HOW DO I FEEL ABOUT ROBOTS HOW DOES-- and all that kind of thing.
