So I’m up to Day 16 of my Junk Free June month eating a vegan diet- purely plant based (no meat, dairy, eggs etc.) My decision to take this up as a challenge was due to me wanting to give back to a good cause (NZ Cancer Society) whilst also challenging myself to being vegan as I always thought this was impossible for me to do. I live by this motto: The more something makes you nervous the more you should do it. Therefore, vegan it was.
I’m still trying to figure out this whole vegan thing for me. I’ve done lots of research on it, and I certainly do agree with why people do decide on this dietary change- which I’m sure also leads to a lifestyle change. Increased health benefits, especially when adding more raw plant based food into your diet, which means increased nutrients, or for animal cruelty reasons, or for lowering carbon emission from less meat intake are all very good reasons in turning vegan. Prior to starting my month of this vegan diet, I researched thoroughly around animal rights and increase health benefits. What did I find? What I always do.. Polarities of good and bad, people saying this diet works amazingly for them, whilst others saying how a high carb low fat diet ruined their body.
I also watched the documentary “Earthlings”- and by far it has been the most honest and visual documentary I have ever watched. This included raw footage of what actually happens in a slaughter house and the way animals are treated prior to ending on one’s dinner plate. I think everyone is so detached emotionally and energetically around what they put into their bodies and also unaware of where their food comes from. Or maybe it’s an ignorance is bliss kind of thing where as long as they don’t know what the animal went through that it’s okay… I also watched this youtube video which explains the energy of the food we put into our bodies. If the energy of the animal comes from a place of anxiety and a feeling of being attacked prior to being killed and then we put this into our body… How is this affecting the energy of our body as a result? It’s true, since eating a purely plant based diet, my body has definitely felt a lot more calm, but also alot more energetic. It’s amazing just how much energy my body is feeling. Usually I fall asleep easily, but sometimes I find that I have so much energy that I find it harder trying to fall asleep.
I real ALOT about what to put into your body, what you should or shouldn’t eat, and what kind of food our body thrives on. It’s funny, because everything you read, there is ALWAYS something that contradicts it. The sad thing is, that people trust too easily what they read these days. Correlation does NOT imply causation. There is ALWAYS something that contradicts what you just read. So my take home message? Listen to your body. There are so many diets out there these days… Whether it be paleo, to vegan to blood type diet or even a pure meat diet. People are always going to disagree on things. But I think at the end of the day, we have to remember how different everyone is and how differently out bodies function, thus our diets vary drastically from one person to the other.
I think as a Chiropractor in the future, this is one of the most important things I have to remember. Different things work for different people, there is not ONE type of diet that best suits people, nor is there ONE type of exercise that best optimises one’s potentiality to move. All one can do is listen to their body and trust themselves that they will be guided to the right thing for them.
For me, I can definitely see the benefits of being vegan and why people do it. But I’m not so sure I will continue being vegan once I have reached the 30 days. I feel like my body isn’t reacting to it so well, and needs food sources like fish and eggs to really thrive. Yes, research has shown this and that, but research has not diagnosed every person in the world and given them a diet to adhere to. At the end of the day, only you know what’s best for you, and the only research and person you should be listening to, is yourself. All people need to do, is believe in what they eat, but also make room for understanding and respecting others’ choices. A little less food shamming in the world can create energy for alot more love and support and alot less anxiety around what food we ingest.
Recently, I have been reading “The Tapping Solution” by Nick Ortner. I think it is an awesome self-help book- structured very well and backed up by very good scientific evidence. It is a book based of EFT (Emotional Freedom Tapping) which teaches you how to tap on certain meridian points on your body. We often enter fight or flight mode when an event in the world triggers our emotions which activates the autonomic system. This happens involuntarily, and creates alot of stress which impacts negatively on our body. Activation of the sympathetic system may be observed by an increase in heart rate. However, many a times this occurs so often in our day to day lives we become unaware of this. Once these meridian points are tapped on, they tell the amygdala that this emotional experience I am feeling is actually okay and the body doesn’t need to enter autonomic system as soon as something traumatic happens. Sometimes we don’t even know that this event is traumatic as it may be buried in our subconscious as a belief system which we were programmed into our minds since we were as young as three years old. I am currently reading the chapter around stress and food and our own body. Nick Ortner portrays just how stressful the idea of what to eat is these days. We read so much about what we shouldn’t eat and what we should that it confuses us, so the energy around eating has already lowered substantially. We then, maybe give into a craving and eat that “bad” food, resulting in an even more stress around putting that into our body. By the time the food has reached our stomach, we might as well have not even eaten because the anxiety and stress has already impacted the body so much.
It’s interesting, how much debate and just how sensitive the topic around food is. I just think that at the end of the day, we stay away from processed foods and stick to foods that are purely grown which SUIT our own bodies. If we do this, we would end up a lot happier and a lot less stressed around what to eat= More energy for everything else amazing to happen in our lives!!! xx
