Something that bothers me - and bothers me disproportionately to the offence caused - is misuse of titles. Allow me to explain.
As a Briton, we absorb through cultural osmosis the use of titles for the aristocratic and, well, entitled. It is a part of our cultural landscape. It comes to us with our mother's milk. I'm definitely not saying this is a good thing, it is just a cultural thing.
And so, when people from other cultures that don't typically have aristocrats and entitled people (or at least not the sort that bear titles) use recognisable titles but use them wrong, it throws me out of whatever narrative I'm reading.
For the record; Lord/Duke/Count/Baron Lastname, yes. Lord Firstname yes, Duke/Count/Baron Firstname NO, Sir Firstname yes, Sir Lastname NO.
If you're writing a narrative and you're trying to be formal, and you're in any doubt, go with "my Lord", unless they're a duke, when you go with "Your Grace".
Like, I get it, maybe this place uses the same titles in a different way or whatever, which is an argument I've seen, but then, invent new titles. Don't just use British titles incorrectly.
