Dominum ➢ Night is Calling (feat. Marina La Torraca)
Night is calling. 😏
Wanna sleep again, just sleep, tonight. Night is calling me, moon and stars are out, I'm sorry, I just wanna sleep tonight. Too tired, I call out to the moon, shining as always, I'll see you tomorrow. - DG
Dominum: Night Is Calling
So, new Dominum album! I am oldschool, so I went to a real-life store and bought a physical copy, like the old lady I am. I got the Limited Edition, which included a whole second CD featuring the band's 2025 Wacken performance. (I have not listened to it yet.) The two CDs come in a little cardboard slipcase, which is all well and elegant, except that they were wedged in so tightly that I could not get them out!!! Aaaah!! I mean, I did eventually get them out by gently opening the back of the slipcase, but that thing is definitely 1 or 2 mm too narrow. FYI.
Now, once I had liberated it from its cardboard prison, Night Is Calling turned out to be a really nice album. It's impressive how consistent Dominum is. There are bands that take a while to develop their unique style, but Dominum popped up fully formed and laser-focused on making theatrical, ironic zombie metal. This band was founded in 2022, and this is already their third album, with no indication that they are running out of ideas or enthusiasm! Even the songs I (currently) like less (Devil's Son, Endzeit) are still quite good, nothing that needs to be skipped. It's just that other songs overshadow them.
Dominum make a type of power metal that reminds me of musical theatre, with its focus on dramatic performances, characters and a certain air of irreverence. With these album, Dominum moves a little away from its usual zombies and mad scientist tropes, and embraces other classic b-movie horror things, especially vampires. This is essential music for your Halloween party playlist. My recommended tracks are Jack the Ripper, I Don't Drink Wine and Children of the Night. And you should trust me because I have impeccable taste.
Also, this is a very long post as I discuss all the songs on the album.
When I first heard The Circus Is In Town some weeks ago, I wasn't overly impressed, because it felt like a typical Dominum song, perhaps dialed to 11 with the "evil circus" vibe. But in context of the album, it's welcome to have the opening track remind us of the status quo (Dr. Dead on a quest to conquer the world with his zombie army), because the very next track introduces a shocking plot twist: In Doctor Doctor, the villain protagonist becomes himself the victim of something supernatural and deadly ... The music video seemingly ends with Dr. Dead's, uh, death, and a mere hint at what might be behind it all: vampires ... :O
The next two tracks are about vampires. Nosferatu is a fun track. Although it kind of reuses the melody from The Dead Don't Die, its overall energy is very different, much faster and madder, so it really doesn't feel derivative or whatever. But the real stand-out here is Children of the Night, which is of course a reference to the 1931 Dracula movie with Bela Lugosi:
I actually have this dialogue etched permanently in my brain because it was also sampled on a Die Ärzte album in the olden days. (As an intro to Der Graf, one of Bela's vampire songs. Yes, Bela named himself after Bela Lugosi. You see how everything is connected.)
Shit, I love this song. While it is undeniably about Dracula, I am privately pretending that it is about Lestat, because I am socially distancing from the fandom and the new season of the IWTV TV show to avoid spoilers until I can watch it myself ...! ;_; (I kinda miss these fuckers.)
I mean:
"he's charming he's high-style but yet still a vampire"
I think Lestat could have a bright future in power metal. The only real challenge would be getting a Wacken timeslot after sundown.
Later on the album, I Don't Drink Wine is another song built around an iconic line from the 1931 Dracula movie. Again this song strikes a nice balance between humour and sincere drama, just the way I like it!
Dark Melodies deviates the most from the typical Dominum sound, but I almost wish it would stick with the slower, quieter style throughout, instead of going back to a typical powerful chorus. Along with the next song, Night Is Calling, it continues the story of Dr. Dead being in some undefined danger, stalked by some evil, going through some kind of transformation, or fever dream. It's rather vague, which is often true for power metal storylines.
I would like to point out that the last three music videos essentially had the protagonist get harrassed by a succession of differently costumed dominas. We should psychoanalyze this.
So, Night Is Calling features guest vocals by Marina La Torraca, the new Battle Beast singer. I like her in this song, but of course it's funny the track calls it "ft. Battle Beast", because Marina is still very new and most people would still think of Noora Louhimo as the Battle Beast singer ... Regardless, it's a nice song and it stands out not only thanks to the two singers.
Now for the album's true star, the man, the myth, the legend: Jack the Ripper!!!!! This song has a great chorus and a fantastic instrumental section, which really elevates it. I also like that the lyrics express some criticism of the hype surrounding Jack the Ripper. I'm never going to call Dominum lyrics deep, but this song has substance.
Like I said, there is nothing really wrong with Devil's Son and Endzeit, but my personal preference is for the catchy vampire songs and Jack the Ripper, and my heart can only love so much at once. Devil's Son deals with another classic horror trope, the son of the devil, but Endzeit tbh is just about real life ..... (I may not be in an optimistic mindset.) At least Dr. Dead mentions his zombies in the lyrics, because I've been wondering where they've shambled off to while their master was having psychosexual adventures with vampires or whatever the hell that was! XD
Every Dominum album has featured cover songs, and this one is no exception. This time, it's Michael Jackson's Thriller ... which is a bold choice since you're competing with a very iconic voice! But the song is undeniably on-theme ... much more on-theme than some previous cover songs, come to think of it. The album concludes with two bonus songs ... I am not sure if they are only on the physical album, but they are acoustic versions of Don't Get Bitten By The Wrong Ones and Hey Living People ... they are fine, but a little underwhelming for reasons I find difficult to pin down. To me, it sounds like the vocal track and the acoustic guitar don't really come together, perhaps the voice is too much in the foreground, too clean or too dominant, or I just don't find the arrangement transformative enough? I dopn't think it can compete with, say, the acoustic version of Savatage's When The Crowds Are Gone ... maybe an unfair comparison though, lol.
Despite this, to me, weaker finish, this is a great album that's making me realize I should hurry up and buy tickets for the tour in December!!!
