Nightopian/Mepian headcanon rambles, yay!
A group of Nightopians is called a Rest.
All three of the Pians here- Napp, Snuze, and an unnamed one, are fully grown. Napp and Snuze, being from a different timeline, age differently than the smaller ones. Nightopians from the 'game' timeline are comparable to third level nightmarens (simple minded and carefree), while Pians from the "Tarot/Comics" timeline are comparable to first levels.
Physical differences: throughout adolescence, All 'pians look roughly the same- though the Tarot!Pians are a bit more insectoid, with clawed limbs instead of the softer mitten-like hands of the other types. There is a wide variety of pians, just like any other animal. (contrasting from the games, but hey. i'm not restricted by game sizes. Drawings are much smaller than a bunch of 3d models and all.) Dreamers will usually see a variety paralleling the people they see in their lives. The ones here are just referenced from the games.
Super-Pians are a rare variant, displaying more strength and sharper tempers than their fellow pians. While it's unknown what causes them, the current theory is that they're born as protectors, defending their Rest from predators.
For the Tarot Timeline-
Once one reaches adulthood, they shed their wings, as their oneirostat is capable of sustaining flight on its own. In their place, a secondary set of arms is grown. Alongside this, they'll develop another pair of eyes, primarily used for sensing Ideya.
A Super Pian is a rare instar one can take upon if they elect to train themselves for it. The rarest state is the Godstate, in which one grows to immense size and grows a third set of arms and a fifth eye. Due to the political implications of this, there is only ever one Godstate Nightopian at the time. The current godstate is The Great Mother.
All pians are naturally lithovores, with Blue Chips being a favored food source. Pians have hard beaks and rough tongues, allowing them to shatter and rasp down rocks into more manageable pieces.
Mepians are Nightopian/Nightmaren hybrids, a mix of good and bad dreams. Naturally born mepians exist in all timelines, while Induced mepians are an Archie/Tarot exclusive.
-
Below this point is JUST relating to the Tarot timeline.
Natural-born mepians include all possible hybrids of draumr, from nightmaren to nightmaren, to between Onariats- the group including Nightopians. The main difference between nightmaren and onariat is how they effect dreams around them.
While not entirely uncommon, there's still much fewer of them than there are of non-hybrids.
For Induced Mepians, they are irreversibly changed, traits added upon to their original form. Splitting them apart, while possible, leaves one with what are essentially two corpses.
"Originally, the ritual of inducing mepians was used for religious or political reasons. It represented unity."
Pictured above are The Dreamers, allegedly the very first induced Mepians- a Nightopian/Aveomin hybrid pair- or, First to First.
In modern day, while it does retain those uses, there are also those who choose to become mepians as an act of rebellion, out of disillusionment from their current life.
Alongside those who have the choice made for them.
Unofficial routes of inducing usually use third levels as the second party, allowing wider variety of traits, but fully absorbing the third level in the process. This method is much faster than the true ritual, which combines individuals evenly...
...Which made it perfect for The Mantle's uses.
Induced mepians will experience a change in diet- combining the needs of their components.
Yes King Super Pian sir, we will build your tower, even in the snow in the cold month of January! This is the third time I have got the Super Pian in JOD.
interest check for nightopian + ideya pins hrrrrmmm
I love how game devs in the late 90s and early 2000s just agreed that more action games need little creatures you can collect
Arthemis - Princess of Nightopia
HEY! Has been a while again, I've been working on my first level Nightopian OC Arthemi's design and gosh... I almost died doing this, but now, I am more satisfied with that design than the classic one! If you don't know the classic one, here:
I'll probably make a new introduction/information sheet for her someday!
