ALRIGHT IM OFF WORK TODAY SO NIGHTWING 140 REVIEW TIME LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOO
Ah man I was way too tired to post this on NCBD so I waited till I was off of work to go ahead and reread my Review before posting it.
Doesn't need to be stated but I'll say it anyways This contains spoilers for the story and panels as well so read at your own
Ah yes here we see watters amazing deduction on the awful car culture of the United States. Now I'm most likely going to make an entire post on this arc once it's completed talking about how This arc goes into talk of the highway and car culture of the US, the loss of third spaces, etc etc. But anyways back to this, you can kinda see this statement in the differences between NYC and quite literally any other city in the US that isn't as walkable as NYC, whereas with NY you DO have the kids hanging around neighborhoods and stores after school, you have kids walking around the city with their friends shopping and just being a kid in general, and the fact that the city is so walkable and doesn't just add more lanes ("Just one more lane bro and then traffic will be fixed"), is why many people actually like living there (I mean come on who doesn't love having stores within 3-5 mins from your house?).
Again another great panel to show how highways have historically and still are destroying neighborhoods and people's livelihood for a simple lane. This of course I can make a statement back to the (first?) issue of this arc where I stated that the story was really reminding me of redlining in the US and how Black neighborhoods and families where displaced and had their homes and jobs destroyed, eventually pushing them out of the land due to racial attacks from a racist government.
Oh man I really do like Dr.Sereika a lot, since this is the second issue he's in, I'm going to cope and assume that he's going to be a permanent or semi-permanent supporting character in the run.
😭???? IT'S JUST A PRANK BRO
He's so annoying I hope he stays LMAOO
New Villain 👀?
Oh wait I that's actually- pretty cool? Really this is what had yall's panties in a twist and crying that Nightwing is too fantastical now?? That's so Mild LMAOOO, Yall had me thinking that I was going to start seeing Dick cast spells in this issue please be serious yall.
HOL UP HIS WRITING FIRE?! that third dialogue box is actually a really interesting thing that stood out to me. Of course, this panel is directly correlating to my point on this arc being a commentary on American Car Culture, Redlining, and the destruction of Black and poor neighborhoods. But that dialogue box? That I can connect it towards gentrification (and this especially can be seen in modern day NYC, where many of the poor and blacker part of the city are being rapidly changed while the residents who has been there for generations are pushed out through rich people pricing them out of their homes). And I want to say that this could also be a commentary on Taylor's run (when I'm making my big post analyzing this arc I'll re-read the taylor run to see if I can insert what I'm saying here). But anyways I wanted to say that while many of the stuff taylor put in his run are no longer here, you can tell that watters is making a point using those elements.
Oh My God it's like this arc was written for me specifically. Oh man I'm going to nerd out so bad on this analysis I'm going to write, American Car culture, redlining and Suburbia was one of my favorite focuses in American history (besides like WW2 and the Cold War of course)
DICK FEELING THE CLOSE CONNECTION WITH BLUDHAVEN WHERE HE SENSE IT'S IN PAIN, THATS HIS CTIY FOR REAL!
I love how he's drawn here lol
OH MY GOD THEY PUT HOLES IN HIM 😭😭 So much for having him be a recurring villain.
Oh? While I do think some of the anger here is of Dick's own feelings, with the comment earlier stating that "He's usually not like that" and that "the crash is getting to him" and the reveal of the Medusa mask I'm thinking that that Dick's anger is being intensified by the Highway
Holy shit what an ending.
ok Originally, I had this issue a 4.5 before going in and reading it, now? It's definitely a full five stars. This was a big info drop on the highway, the mayor, and Bludhaven in general (before the highway was built and after). This was a very needed issue, and I say will that I don't hate the way watters did it. It does flow much better as an infodump than say the issues in the previous arc where info needed to be dropped. Again I really do like the writing Watters has for Dick and quite frankly I missed reading Nightwing issues like this and waiting with anticipation for the next drop.
Welp See you guys Next month for Issue 141 (AND AS WELL AS BATMAN AND ROBIN DYNAMIC DUOS)
Remember when Bruce was being a big ole worrywart about Dick skydiving, and he was essentially like:
Bruce: Why did you take up skydiving as a hobby?
Dick: Why? What do you mean 'why?'
Bruce: What's the purpose of it?
Dick: To break records 😎.
Bruce: What kind of records?
Dick: Jumping from 105,000 ft.
Bruce: And why would you want to do that?
Dick: So I can go to space and come back on my feet.
Bruce: BUT WHY?!
Look what the black crows dragged in...
Nightwing #149
Holy Fuck does Watters know how to write !!!!!!
« But tomorrow he’ll wake and he’ll wonder… if he was happy to have the excuse. The excuse to sink a little lower »
God I’m loving this latest arc.
i'm very emotional rn trying to debrief the lattest issue... i know it sounds dramatic even a little delusional but what it seems fantastical it's a flawed view of the power of design to change the world (this was the great failure of the modernist dream) but it's not unbased or irrealistic per se. Cities tell us things, certain urban patterns tell us things, there's a lot of history buried but not unoticied like in the City of Mexico where the sibking of the buildings makes you think about the Asteca canals buried. To siege the fabric, to mess with the image of a city and its memory is unfortunately a reocurrent phenomenon in human history and these spaces can change how the citizens interact and view their own home.
bludhaven is in the same state of early xix century european cities and i couldn't be happier
