Large Niltava
October 26, 2022 - Small Niltava (Niltava macgrigoriae) Found across the Himalayas into southern China and northern Southeast Asia, these Old World flycatchers live in clearings and edges of hill and mountain forests and in grassy areas with some trees. They eat small invertebrates and some fruit, foraging alone or in pairs and capturing insects in short flights from low perches. Breeding from March to August, females build cup-shaped nests from moss in cavities in stream banks, between rocks, or in saplings while males gather materials. Both parents incubate the clutches of three to five eggs.

Were it not for its rich, orangish underparts and dazzling blue highlights, the Rufous-bellied Niltava might be regarded as a rather average species. Retiring in nature, this mid-sized Old World Flycatcher hangs mid-canopy, or amid the understorey of middle elevation forests of the Himalayas east into central China. During the colder winter months, the species migrates to lower elevations as far south as central Thailand.
